Not sure advocating for anarchy is particularly helpful…

Blimey.
From The Telegraph just now:
“ The founder of Extinction Rebellion has been jailed for five years in what is believed to be the longest sentence for non-violent protest in the UK.
Roger Hallam was found guilty of conspiring to block traffic as part of a Just Stop Oil campaign on the M25 over four days of disruption in November 2022.”

I agree with what Amnesty International are saying on their website.
I dont know what autism has to do with anything here. www.amnesty.org.uk/press-releases/uk-lengthy-jail-sentences-environmental-protesters-draconian
I think community service would be appropriate, if the prisons are overflowing.
It is a long sentence, considering some that are served for violent crimes.

climate change is accelerating at an alarming rate.. I really hope Labour start to treat it as a serious concern..

JSO in this instance were punishing everyday folks who were going about their daily lives, earning a living, hospital appointments etc.
What gives them the right to disrupt?
They have no idea what ordinary folk do to reduce their carbon footprint…

FFS, I am currently teen sitting one of whom is on the autism spectrum.
What the hell has disregarding the law, disrupting and disrespecting people’s livelihoods got to do with being neurdiverse!
I’m another with an adult grandchild with a diagnosis of ASD. I’m tired of people linking neurodiversity with anti social behaviour. People on the spectrum are all different just like everyone else with a petsonality

I think a far better outcome would be hard work for that amount of time in the community in ways that try to make things better for people - working in food banks, community gardening, cleaning dumps, environmental work, work supporting people in need, no choice.
Prison could just turn them into martyrs - helps no one.
Sentencing in this country is bonkers. Someone missing a mock exam is hardly worth putting in the list of outrageous offences. Meanwhile the motorist is king and the planet is burning. Some people on here make Judge Jeffries look kind.

Until public transport accesses all areas unfortunately motorists are and will remain king
It’s about time these wretched people received a stiff sentence. They disrupt people’s lives, hold up ambulances and cause criminal damage. If I were to say what I really think of them I’d be banned.
Yes cars transport the doctors and the shop workers and the plumbers, all the people that ensure the world go round.
Oh I think they are on the whole middle class authoritarians, but if we are looking at reducing the prison population they shouldnt have been jailed.

Maybe house arrest as an alternative as long as it was rigorously enforced?

Nobody is saying that Granny. I commented that Chris Packham looks at things in a very black and white way as he is autistic. My adult child with autism would probably think the same. CP is on their side and wouldn’t want them jailed.
I don’t think anybody said anything about neurodiversity and the protestors. 🙂
Meanwhile the same judge handed a suspended sentence to a man guilty of having indecent images of children who crashed his car deliberately into Downing Street. Why is no one imprisoned for polluting our rivers ? Why do men guilty of domestic violence get a slap on the wrist? People who cause a traffic jam are worse? Prisons are full so we are letting people out early. It’s crazy.

On that we agree totally crazy!
These people are becoming more and more emboldened. These sentences are required now. They've been getting away with a slap on the wrist. If they were allowed to continue we'd probably gave more and more upheaval.
Maybe this will help dissuade others from causing chaos.

Let's all cancel Chris Packham while we're at it. He's a graduate Zoologist, not a Climate Scientist, yet pontificates on matters of which he knows little. A presumptuous little twerp, holier than thou, and a lot richer to boot.
I agree.
He has Aspergers apparently, maybe that has something to do with an arrogance that he and others including Greta Thunberg, who also has Aspergers show and they seem to think only in black and white. They cannot seem to take on board that others don’t agree with them and can’t understand it.
Am glad these self styled eco warriors were jailed I consider them to be dangerous as many fanatics become. It will be only about 18 months in jail but will make others wary of carrying out extremism.
I also consider the police at great fault for not simply removing them from roads quickly.
Primrose53 it is a common mistake/opinion to think all people on the spectrum are of the same mind.
Black or White to use your example is actually diminishing an entire cohort of society.
If we are talking of Aspergers tho, they really do seem to think there are no grey areas in life.It must be tough for them not to be able to recognise nuances.

It makes me truly sad that so many of you grans are so at odds with my views.
Why send them to jail when our jails are overflowing?
They haven't attacked anyone. It's non violent.
I am totally in agreement with Chris Packham
Grammaretto, I agree. Also with NotSpaghetti and Vegansrock.
I don't think anyone realises that the world truly is on fire and that vast swathes of the planet will soon be uninhabitable. People who have farmed for generations will be displaced as the land becomes unworkable and water runs out. It's already happening in parts of the globe. Those displaced people will migrate, first to their nearest cities (which will exacerbate the problem) and then overseas. I agree the protesters would be better educating people of the terrifyingly fragile future life on earth faces but the fact remains that their opinions will be on the right side of history.
People don’t need educating by those extremists, we already know masses about global warming.
Perhaps they should hop over to India and China and educate them there.Or the US.
Here in the UK we are actually doing very well.

Your rudeness when talking about Chris Packham appalled me! Surely you can make your point without being so nasty and insulting?.
This sort of post is getting more and more common on GN and I am sick of it. What is the matte4 with people?
