Blimey.

From The Telegraph just now:

“ The founder of Extinction Rebellion has been jailed for five years in what is believed to be the longest sentence for non-violent protest in the UK.

Roger Hallam was found guilty of conspiring to block traffic as part of a Just Stop Oil campaign on the M25 over four days of disruption in November 2022.”

Apart from general disruption a key factor is the delay caused to cancer patients and emergency services. I think the learned judge was right in sentencing. Preventing individuals receiving hospital treatment for life threatening conditions cannot be tolerated (and that of course includes Tory underfunding and mismanagement of the NHS).

I’m not disputing your comment about Tory underfunding and mismanagement of the NHS

But let’s not forget, they took over from an already damaged NHS.

^1998–2007: Labour's decade*
The decade opened and closed with Labour in power and the NHS in financial crisis, in spite of the greatest increase in expenditure the NHS had ever seen.

Just seen a clip of Louise Lancaster's husband saying his bit after the sentencing. Poor Lou (the kindest person you will ever meet) will now miss her daughter's wedding next summer. How awful, two of the convicted will be missing relative's weddings! Did Lou in her 'kindness' consider for one minute the person whose cancer appointment was missed and delayed for two months? These relatives really are very insular not to even realise the hypocrisy of wanting public sympathy for missing a wedding through your own actions, not as a consequence of someone else's.
These weddings can be rescheduled for another date to include these family members, but funerals or saying goodbye to dying relatives cannot.

,,,,and of course if any of those imprisoned have a close family bereavement, they may well be allowed to attend the funeral, with a prison escort.

Weddings can at least be postponed.
