Just now there is a world wide dropout of many services like banks, airport (delays), hospital services( all of them in Melbourne), police, supermarkets, many internet services. Shows how much we depend on Microsoft, quite alarming. Obviously patchy because our internet is working but the hospitals are in chaos.

Unable to access repeat prescription section of NHS app

I have known for years how much we depend on it.
Myself and friends print things out that we want to keep.

I always see books in country homes, still preserved from the 1700's or something.

And things like finance.
All very well the government saying we will pay you up to £85,000. But what if you cant prove that?

Land - lots of land registry[or is it all] is in digital form.
What can you prove?

Cancer patients are being sent home because they can’t access treatment. Horrible. Airlines are being grounded and our major retailers are having to send people away. No online orders.

It’s causing problems here in UK, just been lead item on ITV breakfast news.

Is it a Microsoft problem then?

I didn't know that.

Serious stuff

The Microsoft problem is affecting just about anything you can think of. They say on the BBC it is not thought to be malicious, but who really knows?

MaizieD Fri 19-Jul-24 09:16:44

bump ^

So do we know with certainty that it's a Microsoft issue then?

Urmstongran Fri 19-Jul-24 09:20:52

Quite frightening when you think how much so many of us live our lives on our screens.

petra Fri 19-Jul-24 09:22:21

We can’t point the finger at China, Beijing airport is closed 😁

A major IT outage reportedly linked to the U.S. cybersecurity company Crowdstrike has caused chaos for businesses across the world.

The global software issue has forced many banks, airlines and broadcasters to go offline, and caused many Windows computers to crash suddenly.

In a post on its website, Crowdstrike said: "Crowdstrike is aware of reports of crashes on Windows related to the Falcon Sensor."

Microsoft has said that this has caused "severe degradation" to its services, but has been implementing work-arounds and backups to get people up and running again.
Most of its services are OK now, they say.

So not Microsoft really. It is Crowdstrike apparently.

NotSpaghetti Fri 19-Jul-24 09:33:39

I am not disputing that Microsoft went down for many key services obviously - but they all use this Crowdstrike - and we don't see that at home!

It’s that sort of world now, any IT disruption can have serious effects, let’s hope it gets sorted soon.

I’d ring and check Ladyleftfieldlover . Probably by then things will be ok, hopefully. Things are coming back online here now.

I've been feeling for a long while now that our complete dependence on IT is worrying. This outage doesn't inspire confidence.
What if it had been malicious?

I bet they won’t tell us if it was ! Wouldn’t be a good look from any perspective.

My patient access is unavailable at this moment.. is this the same problem?

NotSpaghetti Fri 19-Jul-24 10:05:44

Yes pascal - I would think so. Apparently Crowdstrike is used for many "secure" systems.
