What on earth?

From The Telegraph this morning:

“ Violence erupted in Leeds on Thursday evening with rioters setting a double-decker bus on fire and overturning a police car.

Hundreds of locals clashed with officers and pelted police vans with rocks and bricks.

The mass riot is believed to have broken out after social services took away four children from a family in the inner city area of Harehills at around 5pm on Thursday.

Footage shared on social media showed the crowd smashing a police car’s windows with a pram, rocks and bicycles before flipping the vehicle onto its side.

West Yorkshire Police said officers had safely extricated the children and agency workers before the violence escalated throughout the evening.”

Awful way to show their “support”! Mobs like this contribute to the rest of losing our right to peacefully protest.

Empathy with all bar the “mob”

I’ve seen a short video of two of the older children being forcibly removed, with a huge baying crowd and large police presence. Traumatic for the children and very difficult for police and social workers.
It’s possible a Court had heard evidence and decided all the children needed to be safeguarded. I can’t imagine these older children being manhandled by police officers if a legal order wasn’t in place.
The actions of Mr Ali and his supporters were positive. I’m sure Mr Ali is correct in raising poverty and deprivation as a contributor. We’ve always had an anti social, anti authority section in white British society. The images I saw showed white men throwing stones, setting fire to buses, wrecking police cars and rioting. I’m not suggesting it was confined to white British thugs by the way.

Perhaps check out tin Tok as Rekarie mentions?

The Independent:
Headlines:
"Leeds riots - latest: Harehills violence triggered by ‘family incident’ as hero councillor calmed disorder.

Videos shared from the disturbance also showed a councillor appearing to stop people from throwing more objects onto a fire

Councillor Mothin Ali has told The Independent that local police didn’t have the support needed."

Thank you willow but considering all the footage now available on media, I was hoping to actually see a recording of the people helping.

I realise Mothin Ali said in the interview of him I saw, that some tried to help, but without knowing what help that was it's difficult to attribute bravery to anyone, other than the SS and Police first on the scene who were well aware of the situation they were entering into.

Lots of clips from this event on Tiktok. Some very brave members of the community trying to put out fires and remonstrating with the rioters.

Also some footage of the two men setting the bus alight. Very clear clips which means they're bound to get arrested.

Don't feed the fires.

This reminds me of rioting in Leicester a year or so ago.
Disgraceful.

Totally different, primrose.

The Leicester riots were religion based.

Grannygravy ... I expect most people understand that the Roma community has a reputation of always been very anti authoritarian.

So considering that they live huddled together in Harehills, it's easy to see how situations like this explode.

Sky News reported,

"Just a few hours on from what West Yorkshire Police described as "pockets of disorder", the scene on the ground felt like much more than that, with dozens of people still gathering when we arrived.

Some in the community were curious, recording what was happening on their phones, while others leapt into action.

Those people included a group of men including Mothin Ali, a local councillor, who led a group trying to douse the bus in water.

Speaking to us afterwards while sweating and clearly exhausted, Mr Ali repeatedly mentioned wider social concerns, including issues like poverty and social exclusion as part of a powder keg that was waiting to blow."

Sky News reports local councillors and others trying to douse the flames, very brave.

Do you have photo links Willow3?

I have just accidentally seen a clip of the children being removed. There is absolutely no way that information should be online. Its appalling and a risk to those children.

A harrowing clip of these children being removed just came into my X feed.

Absolutely dreadful to watch.

I am pondering whether or not the ethnicity of the family contributed to a misunderstanding with the authorities, and consequently the rioting?

There is CCTV footage online showing two males setting fire to the bus, obviously not very bright, no attempt to hide their faces…

Why would they hide their faces 🤷‍♀️ Chances of being arrested are pretty low 😡

Questions are now being asked. Why was the city left to burn for hours? Were right decisions made?

Good question.
I expect we’ll have an expensive review and we’ll all know the answers in about a year.

Disgraceful. Mob rule. Think they know better than Social Workers, if involved, who are damned if they do ,damned if they don't. Speculation about what has gone on,is not helpful.
Hopefully the perpetrators will be caught, if so expect more violence.

I wondered what had set it off, so thanks for that Urmstongran.
It’s summer, and summer often brings out the rioters who commit criminal damage on a vast scale. Some people would riot if someone swatted a wasp. The reason is because they can. Little is done about it. It was reported late last night that the police wouldn’t move in until the rioting died down and apparently that took about eight hours. The French would have been in with the water cannons.

Yeah, exactly.
Summertime in the UK brings out barbecues and rioting and setting stuff on fire. They hardly need an excuse it becomes an exciting night out on the streets.🙄

They are Jane. However there are very clear CCTV images of some of those who caused damage so they can expect a knock on the door very soon.

nanna8 Fri 19-Jul-24 09:26:33

The social workers won’t say what the problem is because they are not allowed to divulge client information. It must be pretty serious , you would think. The hospital must have notified them because of concerns. Obviously the parents are not going to tell anyone. Difficult.

In opposition, Labour voted against the Policing Bill that introduced the new powers to jail the activists.
