What on earth?

From The Telegraph this morning:

“ Violence erupted in Leeds on Thursday evening with rioters setting a double-decker bus on fire and overturning a police car.

Hundreds of locals clashed with officers and pelted police vans with rocks and bricks.

The mass riot is believed to have broken out after social services took away four children from a family in the inner city area of Harehills at around 5pm on Thursday.

Footage shared on social media showed the crowd smashing a police car’s windows with a pram, rocks and bicycles before flipping the vehicle onto its side.

West Yorkshire Police said officers had safely extricated the children and agency workers before the violence escalated throughout the evening.”

“ One local, who claimed to know the family involved, said the riot had initially begun as a protest against the children being taken away.

“I have heard it was a baby who was injured – by a sibling. But it was just an accident and it happened a while ago.

“The parents took the baby to the hospital for a check-up.

“They could not believe it when the hospital called social services. After all this time, the social workers then took the four children into care.

“They did not give the family a reason. They just said it was for the best.

“Those kids have never been harmed by their parents and that is why people got so angry. It was a protest.”

Well I doubt social workers would go in on a whim. They must have had grave concerns and no matter what the neighbour says, none of us know what goes on behind closed doors.

Disgraceful. Mob rule.

Whatever the circumstances how will setting buses on fire and turning over cars help ?

AGAA4 Fri 19-Jul-24 08:43:28

It's a last resort to take children from their parents so there must be some serious issues that neighbours and friends don't know about.
Causing mayhem and destruction on that level is way over the top. Just an excuse by yobs to be violent.

I wondered what had set it off, so thanks for that Urmstongran.
It’s summer, and summer often brings out the rioters who commit criminal damage on a vast scale. Some people would riot if someone swatted a wasp. The reason is because they can. Little is done about it. It was reported late last night that the police wouldn’t move in until the rioting died down and apparently that took about eight hours. The French would have been in with the water cannons.

Anarchy. It’s sad, police get a bad reputation but they are the generally the first to be turned to in certain circumstances. Sadly no longer the kindly “Dixon of Dock Green” that we grew up with.
They seem to have lost so much trust and respect.

Meanwhile, Home Secretary Yvette Cooper said she was “appalled at the shocking scenes” and attacks on police vehicles and public transport.

If the injury happened a while ago as the Telegraph reports, an assessment will have followed the visit by parents to hospital. Relevant agencies like health, school, social work, police will have been involved.
The riots are terrifying. I almost wish they’d sent the army in

Me too Iam. This went on for hours. People in nearby houses must have been terrified.

JaneJudge Fri 19-Jul-24 09:08:59

how odd

JaneJudge Fri 19-Jul-24 09:14:50

I've just googled and the pictures in the daily mail are shocking

In opposition, Labour voted against the Policing Bill that introduced the new powers to jail the activists.

The social workers won’t say what the problem is because they are not allowed to divulge client information. It must be pretty serious , you would think. The hospital must have notified them because of concerns. Obviously the parents are not going to tell anyone. Difficult.

Germanshepherdsmum Fri 19-Jul-24 09:26:34

They are Jane. However there are very clear CCTV images of some of those who caused damage so they can expect a knock on the door very soon.

Primrose53 Fri 19-Jul-24 09:30:31

This reminds me of rioting in Leicester a year or so ago.
Disgraceful.

I have just accidentally seen a clip of the children being removed. There is absolutely no way that information should be online. Its appalling and a risk to those children.

Yeah, exactly.
Summertime in the UK brings out barbecues and rioting and setting stuff on fire. They hardly need an excuse it becomes an exciting night out on the streets.🙄

Disgraceful. Mob rule. Think they know better than Social Workers, if involved, who are damned if they do ,damned if they don't. Speculation about what has gone on,is not helpful.
Hopefully the perpetrators will be caught, if so expect more violence.

There is CCTV footage online showing two males setting fire to the bus, obviously not very bright, no attempt to hide their faces…

Urmstongran Fri 19-Jul-24 11:07:49

Questions are now being asked. Why was the city left to burn for hours? Were right decisions made?

Wyllow3 Fri 19-Jul-24 12:23:08

Sky News reports local councillors and others trying to douse the flames, very brave.

Good question.
I expect we’ll have an expensive review and we’ll all know the answers in about a year.

Why would they hide their faces 🤷‍♀️ Chances of being arrested are pretty low 😡

A harrowing clip of these children being removed just came into my X feed.

Absolutely dreadful to watch.

I am pondering whether or not the ethnicity of the family contributed to a misunderstanding with the authorities, and consequently the rioting?
