What on earth is wrong with the Tory party.

If you look at the makeup of parliament at the moment, 2/3rds of the chamber is filled with progressive parties, and only 1/3 composed of the centre right/right/far right opposition which is very weak and divided, this is bad for democracy.

This is a different ball game altogether though, isn’t it? I think that whichever party is in power it needs effective opposition, and the Tories need to rebuild in order to be that opposition now.
I didn’t like much of what Duncan-Smith did, but he’s a serious and effective politician with experience - can you think of anybody else who could do the rebuilding leadership role in the interim period, given the immediate past government leaders have baggage?

Yes, and that, like the actions of Gordon Brown are the sort of actions that impacted on millions of people.

I'm not impressed by IDS. And certainly not by Victoria Atkins who obviously can't get over being in Opposition with the fewer speaking opportunities that entails.

This from Baroness Ros Altman, who has fought tirelessly for WASPI women:

“As Pensions Minister, I kept trying to find a way to alleviate the unfairness of these short-notice changes. Unfortunately, there was no sympathy for these women. Iain Duncan Smith, as Secretary of State, refused to engage with the 1950s women adversely affected and I was instructed not to speak to them. I was told the women would go away sooner or later.”

Just as an example, IDS secured funding for our new hospital in East London, and will not allow the project to fail if it's the last thing he does.

IDS is actually a very measured person. He was our MP for many years, DH knew him and his work ethic. Very proactive and a do-er, but not easily ruffled or rude.

Apparently more centrist ousted MPs had a meeting in the Carlton this week - including Mordaunt. They are calling for restraint before charging ahead and choosing a right wing leader. They are also hoping to get re-elected asap in the hope of pulling the Tory party back from oblivion if it swings to the right.

I still think the proposal to put Iain Duncan-Smith in as interim leader is the best option, because it will inevitably take time to find the best way forward. Somebody who has already said they don’t want the leadership long term would be the best broker between the factions.

Correction- Labour said nothing at all about fishing in the King’s Speech.
Now why is that?
Starmer is renegotiating fishing rights with the EU I guess?

Also something about one billion pounds- is that in lost subsidies?Not forgetting plans for solar panels on farm land which removes acreage from food production.

There is no excuse for shouting and screeching in parliament ronib, whatever the circumstances. That is why the speaker admonished her for behaving abominably. I don’t care what party people are from, or what their grievances are, they deserve punishment for that kind of behaviour. You can’t defend it. Please let’s put some dignity back into the commons.

If Badenoch does become Conservative Party leader, I expect we'll see more of that kind of thing at PMQs. She might have got away with her third form bitchfest directed at Angela Rayner, but I wonder what Keir Starmer will make of her.

I suspect the reason Atkins and Badenoch weren’t ask to leave is because it was close on 2:30pm and the session was ending.

What we don’t know is what Chope did afterwards (if anything at all to his own party members) or what Hoyle might do. As I said earlier, so many MPs taking to social media voicing their dismay at the behaviour that I suspect more than a few official complaints will be made.

How Chope ever became Deputy Speaker is a mystery. Some might remember him and others filibustering/blocking private member’s bills on free hospital parking for carers. making upskirting a crime and making it an offence to attack police dogs, police horses and prison officer dogs.

Those two Tories deserve a "bashing". Their behaviour was childish and totally inappropriate. They should have been asked to leave the House. Quite honestly, anybody who applauds the behaviour has shown up how low their standards are.
