What on earth is wrong with the Tory party.

I’ve just watched an incident in which Victoria Atkins was told by the speaker that she had behaved abominably. I would tend to agree, but I thought her performance was rather like a screeching fishwife.

Earlier this week I watched Badenoch give a speech that was deeply unpleasant, patronising, and a classless embarrassment.

It would be a massive mistake for the Tories to even begin to consider her as the next leader, not only for her abysmal parliamentary performances, but also for her failure as a government minister.

Although if they want to loose the next election then I would heartily commend her as the next leader.

She was like that at the hustings before the election. In a nutshell, she "blamed" and "put down" anybody who wasn't going to vote for her. According to her, she'd been a minister, so knew more about running a country and knowing what was good for us than any of us did.

Oh I completely agree WW. They should take a leaf out of Deputy Leader Angela Raynor’s book. Such class.

The Tory party egg hill be in the wilderness for a few years now. It doesn't really matter who they choose as their leader. Not sure why anyone would want the job!

Of course, 10 or 15 years from now it will be all change again. They'll either be back or Reform will have taken off.

Reform seems to be gaining a lot of support from Gen Z. Nigel has a lot of fans on social media platforms, populated by the late teens, early 20s.

Hope they'll grow out of it.

In her attack on Rayner, Badenoch couldn't help herself from lying about her own childhood. She wasn't brought under a socialist government. Nigeria was governed by a military dictatorship. In any case, she spent part of her childhood in the US, where her mother was a lecturer at Harvard.

PS. She's stopped saying it now, but she used to claim that she walked for miles with a rusty bucket to collect water.

What is an egg hill? Who knows. I think I meant will

Honestly I must remember to check before send

The Reform ‘youthquake’ turned out to be an urban myth Reckarie.

If you look at the YouGov analysis of votes by age group, it is older voters who favour Reform.

Casdon Sat 20-Jul-24 16:33:22

I read today that Suella Braverman is rumoured to be considering defecting to Reform. That would be one out of the leadership equation, not that I can imagine Farage and her as political bedfellows.

Rekarie Sat 20-Jul-24 16:58:21

Tiktok Casdon. Much beloved by youngsters.

The Conservatives have 78 000 followers Labour, 27 thousand and Nigel Farage has almost a million.

Now of course, that in itself means very little to most grown ups who dismiss the likes of Tiktok, but we do so at our peril.

That's where GenZ now go for information. For news and health advice. Google is old hat.

But they do seem to like Nigel Farage. His content gets umpteen millions of views.

Casdon Sat 20-Jul-24 17:15:05

Followers on TikTok doesn’t indicate support though Reckarie. My son is Gen Z, he follows Farage because he dislikes him intensely and enjoys laughing at him. They don’t consume media like we do, they like outrageous, weird and sensational.

Grantanow Sat 20-Jul-24 17:25:27

The Tories are in the grip of a collective delusion that being extremely right wing will guarantee electoral success next time. Dream on. Completely bonkers.

LizzieDrip Sat 20-Jul-24 17:30:29

Agree Casdon!

For Gen Z, social media ‘followers’ do not translate into support in the same way they might do with older age groups. I see this from my teenage GC.

Merion Sat 20-Jul-24 17:34:27

By age demographic, the lowest percentage vote for Reform was among 18-24 at 9%. Twice as many voted Green.

New polling by You Gov shows Reform are not as popular as they think - if ever we had AV. 48% of people consider them their least favourite party.

I watched the end of yesterday’s debate not just the social media clip. Steve Reed was trying to wrap it up by 2:30pm, as must happen. There was a lot of noise coming from the opposite bench but the camera was on him. I think someone may have been asking him to give way but because Deputy Speaker Chope had let other speeches overrun, Reed was short on time and didn’t want to give way. He has every right to refuse. You can see him repeatedly looking up at the clock and skipping over pages of things he had wanted to say.

Chope should have kept prior speakers to time and stamped on the Tory behaviour earlier. As it was, it seemed to take many seconds for him to admonish Atkins. He didn’t admonish Badenoch at all. Earlier she had behaved very rudely towards Angela Rayner.

Quite how Chope ended up in the Speaker’s Chair is a topic for another discussion.

Angela Rayner - class? Is that a joke?

Absolutely, it doesn’t indicate support at all ! Plus a lot of those followers could be from other countries not just Britain .

It’s certainly irrelevant to this discussion.

Allsorts Sat 20-Jul-24 17:51:31

Angela Raynor classy😂

Joseann Sat 20-Jul-24 18:04:16

"abominably", that's a good choice of word!
She did screech, you're right, and her posture in that clip isn't up too much either.
Not a good look.

Well, I have answered the question before, 'What will Labour do when they have won the Election?', which is, continue Tory bashing. But thank you for this thread, otherwise I would have misses Kemi Badenoch's stylish performance as she skilfully eviscerated Angela Rayner while exuding style, grace and wit.

I haven't laughed so much since I saw Karen Brockman from Outnumbered demolished by Headmistress Rebecca Front.

Just goes to show we have different tastes. It made me cringe and just confirmed to me what a vile person she is - and a liar! As I wrote, she adopted exactly that tone with her constituents, which is why her strong majority was decimated. How did a rant like that contribute to the business of government?

Do you mean you think Kemi Badenoch is destined to be the next Tory leader eazybee, or was your comment just a dead cat? If you do think she is, how do you think she can win over the more centrist Tory MPs?

For once, Angela Rayner did show she has more class than Kemi Badenoch.

Indeed! There are few politicians whom I absolutely loathe and she is one of them.
