There has never been a male spouse of a US PRESIDENT and if Kamala is nominated as candidate and elected , her husband would be known as FIRST GENTLEMAN … I wish her every success in the election as she will have to face off with bully boy Trump

The American economy seems to be faltering - investors seem worried to a recession. Bad news for Harris as the economy did well under Biden.

Economist 08. 08. 2024 "Will-americas-economy-swing-the-election"

I'd imagine the democrats are quite worried.

Casdon Tue 13-Aug-24 17:07:34

I don’t know Norah, but meantime Elon Musk’s attempt to boost Trumps campaign seems to have faltered pretty badly. This from CNN News today:

Its an appalling read, item after item of gross lies!

nanna8 Thu 15-Aug-24 10:06:06

Thank the Lord we don’t live there just now ! We all look like a bunch of honest innocents. If Kamala wins there will be riots from the Trump mob. If he wins it could be total chaos anyway. Ssshish.

Siope Thu 15-Aug-24 12:01:16

Who is we?

There are American posters and lurkers on Gransnet, born and with acquired citizenship, both living in the USA and elsewhere. Some of those living elsewhere might, for all you know, quite like to live in the US again.

Please do just speak for yourself.

nanna8 Thu 15-Aug-24 12:09:13

Ok point taken Siope

nanna8 Thu 15-Aug-24 12:10:51

Personally, and I stress personally, I wouldn’t go back there just now until it is sorted out. As no doubt it eventually will be one way or another.

Marsh Family song on JD Vance. enjoy.

Good work guys.

I think JD Vance was done when he called Kamala a "childless cat lady". After all, it's not the insult he thinks it is. Many women make an informed choice not to have kids and are very happy with their choice. Cats make excellent pets.

I see people are wearing Cat Lady t shirts and other Cat lady things in protest and it makes me smile.

edition.cnn.com/2024/08/15/politics/trump-attacks-harris-analysis/index.html

"Trump has the inklings of a plan to take on Harris, but he seems unable to implement it"

quite a detailed article but interesting to catch up.

I never quite understand why Kamala is criticised for smiling a lot and sometimes - gasp - actually laughs. Its a breath of fresh air.

I have advised one of my students who wanted to go and study in the USA this autumn (fall!) NOT to go. I fear that if Kamaly wins, there will be riots and worse- led by Trump and his supporters- bordering on civil war.

Economist .Aug 15th 2024. Over the past year-and-a-half inflation has fallen sharply across the rich world. Although some central banks have now begun to cut interest rates, few are yet ready to pat themselves on the back for a job well done. In many countries the core rate of inflation, excluding volatile energy and food prices, remains uncomfortably high—at 3.2% in America and 2.9% across the euro zone—even as underlying economies show signs of slowing and financial markets become increasingly jittery. The marathon task of returning price growth to more normal levels is not quite finished. And the last mile, as so often, is proving the toughest.

If Kamala can articulate this well, she'd have great debate bits.

If you don’t mind some swearing (and one annoying product placement), Randy Rainbow sums up the last few weeks and the choice facing Americans:

It's for Americans to choose but their choice will impact on the rest of the world. Personally, I hope Harris and Walz succeed but it may be a close run thing.

Wyllow3 Fri 16-Aug-24 15:10:59

It will impact the world a great deal - Ukraine, Israel, NATO, are the obvious ones. I think a Starmer/Harris situation would be benign for us.

Norah Fri 16-Aug-24 15:17:59

NATO and Paris Agreement would impact us, I'd think.

Wyllow3 Fri 16-Aug-24 15:33:03

How I managed to forget the Paris Agreement I dont know!

Yes, both Trump and Vance deny that man-made climate change is upon us.

Norah Sat 17-Aug-24 13:39:07

Reading this today. Many Americans love their sports.

Waltz was a coach of school sports. Apparently Harris-Walz are able to bring a football energy to their rallies. Walz appealing to the "Friday Night Lights" crowd appears to rattle the opposition.

Casdon Sat 17-Aug-24 13:43:14

That’s interesting Norah. When I was last in America we went to an American football game in Chicago, and I remember thinking how very differently the crowd behaviour was to the UK - cheerleaders, and somebody on a podium during the game leading the crowd response - it seemed alien to me, but the crowd absolutely loved it. I can see tapping into that would be powerful.

Norah Sat 17-Aug-24 14:01:09

NYT quote; Mr. Walz wasn’t the head coach at Mankato West High School when the school defied all odds to win a state championship in 1999 — that was Rick Sutton, who did the work of negotiating the different constituencies and leading the team. He was the one who gave quotes to The Star Tribune after the win. But Mr. Walz was by many accounts a passionate and compassionate assistant coach. “We knew all the coaches had confidence in us and our abilities, but Coach Walz was like the one where you knew it, you felt it,” one of his players said recently.

Those qualities can be useful in the locker room but in terms of politics, I’m more impressed by Mr. Walz’s résumé as a member of the Army National Guard for 24 years; as a public school teacher for two decades; as a member of the House of Representatives from Minnesota for 12 years; and as the governor of Minnesota, where his down-home and authentic style has connected him to the Midwest.

If Mr. Walz wants to channel Coach Taylor under the glow of the Friday night lights, I say go for it. Coach Taylor’s most cited line in the television show occurred in a fictional speech in a fictional locker room in front of actors playing fictional roles when he said, “Clear eyes, full hearts, can’t lose.”

Based on other threads 😂 😂 I'm wondering when Kamala's trouser suits will be compared and contrasted to Hillary's trouser suits? I recall Hillary's trouser suits were viewed quite poorly, as unattractive and matronly.

😮 oh please no.

One decent into the gutter is quite enough.

Whitewavemark2 Mon 19-Aug-24 07:30:33

I read in The Times that Harris’s rhetoric on immigration is pure Starmer.

“Harris is undeniably speaking the same language as Starmer. Just as he did, she is at least talking as if she is willing to confront a perennial weakness for American progressives — migration — from a position of strength.

Harris, like Starmer, was a state prosecutor. Frank Sharry, her migration adviser, was moonlighting for Labour ahead of the election, as another of DC’s parish noticeboards, Politico, noted last week.“

David49 Mon 19-Aug-24 09:39:58

I did notice the “fight for our freedoms” speech I hope they don’t take that as literally as the Trumps supporters did.
