There has never been a male spouse of a US PRESIDENT and if Kamala is nominated as candidate and elected , her husband would be known as FIRST GENTLEMAN … I wish her every success in the election as she will have to face off with bully boy Trump

I read in The Times that Harris’s rhetoric on immigration is pure Starmer.

“^Harris is undeniably speaking the same language as Starmer. Just as he did, she is at least talking as if she is willing to confront a perennial weakness for American progressives — migration — from a position of strength^

I hope she is far more progressive and honest about the evidenced and undeniable benefits of immigration.

So far, Starmer has made no attempts to change the narrative around immigration, bar a mostly unnoticed tweak to the language used to describe asylum seekers who arrive without visas, whom the Home Office now call irregular, rather than illegal, migrants.

It’s one of my bigger disappointments with the current government.

I agree with every word of this article by Nesrine Malik

Personally, and I stress personally, I wouldn’t go back there just now until it is sorted out. As no doubt it eventually will be one way or another.

I have advised one of my students who wanted to go and study in the USA this autumn (fall!) NOT to go. I fear that if Kamaly wins, there will be riots and worse- led by Trump and his supporters- bordering on civil war.

IMO if students want to study in the US they should be given the opportunity….stop panicking people…

Dont worry, after last time if Trump looses the police and National Guard will be on full alert for trouble

NotSpaghetti Mon 19-Aug-24 11:58:44

The Hariis team have engaged 100s of "the best" Lawers all over the country to fight the inevitable election denial that Trump is seen to be planning by telling people not to accept the results.

His supporters have already been testing out the various ways (state by state) to change laws and to not agree/confirm the results. They have been doing this in less high profile elections around the country.
The Harris lawers have been getting to grips with these methods and have been defeating them one by one - so I'm hoping that by November all possible "reasons" will have been tested and failed.

Personally I can't bear Trump - but if he genuinely wins through fair means that's one thing - and I think that people would accept it. It is the lies and cheating that will push people to anger. So, by being ready for his tricks this time I think it will be hard to challenge - and cries of an unfair election should be prevented.

Keeping fingers crossed.

I'd think the police will be prepared, However Trump is not prepared to accept defeat the gentlemanly way Gore did in 2000.

I agree totally Bea65
It will be more important than ever for decent citizens to stand up for democracy, to be seen openly standing up to bullies and to show by their example that corruption will never prevail.

“The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing,”
And this includes avoiding confrontation if necessary

Of course Norah, ironically, Gore should have won - as he won Florida. He probably shouldn't have conceded so gracefully!

Indigo8 Mon 19-Aug-24 12:17:23

When I think back to the self-righteous outrage felt by so many Americans over President Nixon and Watergate, I find the attitudes of some of the present day American people difficult to understand.

What has changed the American psyche? Trump has outdone Nixon for wrong doing many times over. He has shown himself to be a liar, a fantasist and a criminal, yet, still a great number of Americans still love and respect him.

Add to this the fact that Trump is now 78 and becoming increasingly muddle headed and his apparent popularity is even more difficult to understand.

Iam64 Mon 19-Aug-24 12:19:37

Indigo - I agree with you. There seems to have been a shift in views here as well. Boris Johnson still admired by many - despite his lies, laziness and more lies

I'm not the best at expressing articulately.

Of course Gore won, but he was raised to be a gentleman, so gentleman he was - and America got a daft warmonger.

I'm not sure that it's the responsibility of students from other countries to stand up for US democracy.

The US is a big, big country and not doubt there wouldn't be insurrection everywhere, but I think I'd be wary of planning a long term stay there in the next year. Whoever wins I think there will be trouble.

I keep hoping that Trump will make such incredible dogs dinner statement(s) that moderates will be turned off. You make a good point Indigo about the change in the American psyche and expectations of truth and integrity. Since the onset of social media they are not alone in that.

Trump has millions and millions of dollars to throw every negative falsehood he and his supporters can find against Kamala - this week he is campaigning hard to try and take any publicity away from the democratic convention - rallies, TV adverts - its a wonder that anyone not alert to these tricks can make up their minds up at all.

Reading CNN, Trumps advisors are trying to keep him "on message" as his bitterness just "Attacks" his disappointment at losing Biden as an easy target.

Harris will also have to navigate the difficult issues around Israel as a small group have been trying to alter the Biden "negotiate ceasefire 2 state solution"

It's quite curious innit?

Think back to Kennedy's women, Watergate, Bill Clinton's dalliances, Bush2 wars with no wmd ever found - only Ford and Carter seem decent people. Perhaps some have had years to build this attitude?

Fleurpepper Mon 19-Aug-24 13:24:43

Trump stated at a rally that Kamala is really ugly, and that he is much much better looking and hot.

I mean who, let alone any woman- even beging to think of voting for him. He is a pure delusional, manipulating, narcissist of the worst kind, and so racist.

Kamala Harris will mop the floor with Trump in a debate. It will be interesting.

Hopefully not 🙏

Can we add Obama to the list of "Decent"...(as far as I'm aware)

Yes, he seemed quite decent.

Seemingly one of only a very few in our lifetime.

Oh my, he is so unhinged.

Communist? Far left? How does he come to these notions?

Based on other threads 😂 😂 I'm wondering when Kamala's trouser suits will be compared and contrasted to Hillary's trouser suits? I recall Hillary's trouser suits were viewed quite poorly, as unattractive and matronly.

😮 oh please no.

One decent into the gutter is quite enough.

I saw pictures of her on Sunday tour - nice jacket, black trousers AND Chuck's -- I'd imagine Trump can't look at all that pleasant.

I was first referencing the unattractive matronly trouser suits worn by Hillary during her campaign against Trump 2016.

However it is amusing - not a cares what trousers males wear.
