Riots in Southport

I’m fuming about this, allegedly the English Defence League, attacking a local mosque, police attacked and vehicle set on fire. The police have reiterated ‘ the person under arrest was born in the UK’ and to ignore misinformation on social media.
Those poor residents grieving and in shock without the EDL basically stirring.

You haven’t read the report which goes with it! You need to do that.

growstuff Tue 06-Aug-24 13:36:24

Oreo That's the video I was watching and they really don't look brown.

Oreo Tue 06-Aug-24 13:36:04

You have to read the accompanying text from the Sky journalist, it’s no good just looking at a pic.

growstuff Tue 06-Aug-24 13:35:02

I've looked at the recording and the men on motorbikes don't even look brown to me (from the parts of faces and hands, which are visible). Nothing to stop a white person being Muslim, of course. hmm

Perhaps you can google this Doodledog then you won’t be keen to label a poster as a fantasist or worse.

What tickingbird is talking about is absolutely true.I went onto SkyNews app on my iPad this morning and there was a section about a female reporter talking into the camera, it was a small mobile Sky unit. They reported that Muslim men were massing near a mosque and they said that they hoped the police would protect it but if not they were ready to do that, and some carried bats and other weapons.A man on a moped and two other young Muslim men then came close up to the news unit and said things after which the older Muslim men said don’t leave it’s fine, but they felt threatened so got into their car/ van to leave.A younger man then attacked their tyres with a large knife but they were able to drive away.

Yeah, Tiananmen Square is an example to us all.

^What would happen if someone - either a protestor / rioter ..... were seriously injured by having the full force directed on them?^
Oh dear, doesn't bear thinking about. How very worrying.

How do the police cope in other countries?

They seem to cope just fine don’t they?😄

Doodledog Tue 06-Aug-24 13:23:07

And anyway, if he is wearing a mask, how do we even know that he is brown?

Doodledog Tue 06-Aug-24 13:22:13

Oh just stop. No different to describing the rioters as far right thugs. They were Muslims. Their religion isn’t the point. They were carrying weapons and there was a large crowd of them behaving in such a threatening manner the woman reporter had to be taken off air.

If all this rioting carries on there will be turmoil on our streets; more than there presently is. Now is not the time for point scoring.

How can their religion not be the point, when someone is described as Muslim? Just how?

Being brown is not being Muslim, in the same way that being white is not being a thug.

A masked person/man on a bike is called Muslim, and we are supposed to believe that this is a neutral and objective comment. It is nothing of the sort.

Aveline Tue 06-Aug-24 11:58:00

People are already being hurt in these riots! Just have to hope for a good downpour.

Yuk sounds awful. However, people are already being badly injured in these riots. I still think a good soaking would do them all good. Doesn't have to be high velocity. Just hoses!

Isn’t actually that straightforward. First you have to find a water source and then attach a hose to it. Not the easiest of things to do in the middle of a riot.

... and if the police are overpowered and the rioters get hold of the hose - what then?

Also, the force from the hydrants are not like a garden hose where you can playfully target each other in the garden for a laugh. What would happen if someone - either a protestor / rioter or policeman were seriously injured by having the full force directed on them?

It just is not that simple. Only in theory.

It is almost as if the person who initially commented on the Birmingham masked man was gleeful. It supports the narrative.

However, you are right tickingbird nothing to be gained by this sort of conversation.

I wish that people would check before posting inflammatory comments such as Sadiq Khan "selling the water cannon", a very easy fact to check and see that he had inherited them as an expensive white elephant courtesy of one Boris Johnson. In these volatile times, we surely all understand the impact of inaccurate and inflammatory posts

The post was designed to be provocative.

Without context - what was the purpose of saying that Khan sold them other than to ratchet up the anti-Khan propaganda?

Within the context of the sale, it becomes an entirely different scenario.

Muslim.

Being in a crowd does not mean Muslim.

Being Asian not mean Muslim.

Not interested in point scoring. Can't abide lies and misinformation put out there by the usual people.

Oh please. Just stop with your denials of truth. I’m watching it being discussed now with footage. They were outside a mosque to begin with, threatened the reporter then moved to a drink and dine pub and caused trouble there where ordinary people were having meals and proceeded to beat a man up.

They were described as south Asian/Pakistani Muslims.

Plus they were described on the news as Muslim men. Take it up with Sky if you don’t like facts.

They were not described as such. I have just listened to the report.

The situation nationally is very worrying indeed.

^Is a masked man the same as a Muslim now^

No but he was with a crowd of others and was draped in a Palestinian flag?

Stop trying to make out I’m racist. They were Asian. Part of his face was visible.

This is far too serious to be trying to score silly points.

With rain forecast I expect things will calm down.
Otherwise perhaps hoses could be attached to fire hydrants which are available all over the place!

One image which sticks in my mind was of the rioter in beige shorts which a police dog had firmly closed its jaws on.
I wish the dog had been allowed to hold on to the shorts as the man ran off as the ensuing ridicule of continuing in his pants might have defused the situation - even a bit.

It's very different from describing rioters as far-right thugs, but (as you pointed out) now is not the time for point-scoring (or spreading unsubstantiated gossip).

I won't stop calling out stereotypes.

Ok. He had dark skin? Not all 'Asians' are Muslim. Not all supporters of the Palestinian cause are either Asian or Muslim, or anything, really. How do you know that the 'crowd of others' were Muslim?

Can we please stop jumping to ridiculous conclusions,

Nobody is 'trying to make out' that you are racist. You may or may not be, and I would like to give you the benefit of the doubt. But that comment really was.

And many Muslims aren't Asian.
