Riots in Southport

I’m fuming about this, allegedly the English Defence League, attacking a local mosque, police attacked and vehicle set on fire. The police have reiterated ‘ the person under arrest was born in the UK’ and to ignore misinformation on social media.
Those poor residents grieving and in shock without the EDL basically stirring.

And the local MP, last week 🙄

A second Holiday Inn, used to house asylum seekers, set on fire 😥

Someone was talking on Sky News tonight talking about what creates a perfect storm for riots like these. They usually happen soon after an election eg 2011. There were several other things that were relevant too. The only difference to these riots imo is that they are coordinated and I think there are outside influences.

Like Iam we’ve been busy this afternoon, at home though, just in the garden with family enjoying a barbecue. We watched the Olympics then, not news channels. Reading through this thread is quite shocking. Obviously we knew there was rioting going on yesterday, but the level appears to have accelerated, as if it wasn’t bad enough before. Trying to burn hotels down and police stations and libraries. There is a saying something along the lines of when the books are burned, next will be the people. I’m sorry, that’s not exactly right, but it was said about what happened in Germany in the 30s. What an unholy mess.
There’s another saying, something about people enjoying themselves while Rome burns. Ordinary people like my family, in the garden on a summer Sunday afternoon, enjoying a barbecue, while our cities burned. There was some trouble in Portsmouth yesterday. That’s the nearest city to us, about ten miles away. But just outside the city, in our little town, everything peaceful.
What is the world coming to?

I’ve been out this afternoon.,,avoided my town centre as we were aware the EDL were coming. The news from Rotherham is awful.
Arson is a very serious offence and can result in a life sentence. I hope the people who set fires set the Holiday Inn, with staff and asylum seekers in the building are identified, prosecuted and imprisoned.
The police are doing an amazing job, the officers must be exhausted.
How dare these so called patriots attack the people we pay to keep us safe.
I remember the 2016 intelligence that identified white supremicists as such a danger.
They’re clearly encouraging, organising the drunken/drug fuelled idiots attacking the police in so many towns and cities.

More prescient is the intelligence judgement made in 2016, which identified white supremicists as the biggest danger.

Rachel Reeves said "Riots could sweep the streets of Britain if immigration is not curbed after Brexit."
28 Sept 2016. Independent, (Check it !) before being part of the Opposition which voted against almost every measure designed to curb it, and has just now opened yet more floodgates . .

These aren’t anti-immigrant rioters.

They are racists thugs.

It is entirely different and far more serious.

The intelligence service said in 2016 that the U.K. is in greater danger from white supremicists group than it is from Islamic terrorism.

This has been a slow boiler, but with encouragement from Reform and SM, a very small minority of racist thugs have felt enabled to cause riot.

I totally agree Whitewavemark2. The only good thing that has come out of this so far is the open criticism of Farage from the Tories, and from the media. I can’t believe that he still hasn’t condemned the rioting.

Urmstongran Sun 04-Aug-24 20:06:37

It was the “riots could sweep the street” part that I found interesting. Prescient.

(Let's keep on track here: if we wish to discuss immigration that belongs on a separate thread. Not to mention the difference between legal immigration and migration.

"No" to yet another attempt to excuse rioting which is promoting hatred against UK citizens and police. Please can this thread at least stick to the point)

as you were, posters.

👍

Do our police use tear gas?

petra Sun 04-Aug-24 19:33:45

The Government needs to get the army in. All these threats warning the thugs are falling on deaf ears. They don't give a fig for authority.

Other countries might use water cannon on them and Boris did indeed buy some water cannons but they were never employed so sold for scrap if I remember rightly. I don't know how I feel about those, but anyway ..... the police cannot continue to be sitting ducks and carried away to hospital. These riots need to be stamped on ASAP. It's mostly rent-a-mob enjoying a fight. They can't be reasoned with.

The army needs to be called in pronto, and Starmer needs to stay in London until these riots are quelled.

A few rounds of rubber bullets wouldn’t go amiss 😡

Side note - I wonder if the proposed riots didn’t get off the ground in Cardiff and Bangor because chanting we want our country back , England etc. and waving St George’s flags would have gone down like a lead balloon - and presumably similarly in Scotland?

It's bad weather in Scotland.

Were they really thinking of coming to Wales to wave the Saint George flag? I can't believe they are so dense. Maybe I can.

I’m not sure, but I know there was a dispersal order issued in Cardiff in the morning yesterday, lots of police, including at the railway station, and it didn’t get off the ground.

Whitewavemark2 Sun 04-Aug-24 19:07:44

I don’t know tbh.

But de-platforming seems to be an option. The trouble is Musk appears to be actively supporting the rioters. We shouldn’t be surprised that he is a Trump supporter.

How far can our authorities secret or otherwise stop the SM posts when they break UK law as regards "indictment to"?

Daily Express today- -secret services involved

“THE country’s most secretive military unit has been called in to help security services crackdown on the sickening wave of violence which has swept across Britain's streets in the wake of the horror attack in Southport.

The Defence Human Intelligence Unit (DHIU) will provide MI5 with vital intelligence by infiltrating far right wing groups believed to be behind much of the rioting since three young girls were murdered at a Taylor Swift-themed dance class last Monday.

I bet all of the intelligence services are working overtime at the moment.

Good to know though.

One thing that is completely beyond me is why people take their young children to riots. Even ones in pushchairs. I don’t get that at all, even if their intention is to march only, or to watch, it’s such a risky thing to do.

The Far Right?
In Liverpool? The most Far Left district in England?
The media and Starmer are fooling no-one.

It isn’t far left. It’s just that they don’t read The Sun so aren’t indoctrinated with right wing propaganda on a daily basis.

It just happens to be the English flag, 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 sometimes misused sadly by rioters.
