Riots in Southport

I’m fuming about this, allegedly the English Defence League, attacking a local mosque, police attacked and vehicle set on fire. The police have reiterated ‘ the person under arrest was born in the UK’ and to ignore misinformation on social media.
Those poor residents grieving and in shock without the EDL basically stirring.

Sorry Kadinsky I genuinely don’t understand what you mean

I recommend posters listen to the latest News Agents podcast which examines the issue of the Southport protest. It’s enlightening - sheds light on how malign groups use misinformation to incite violence and division in society!

What a sad world we’re living in!

Rioters looted, burnt vehicles and hurled deadly missiles at police in Southport for hours last night after misinformation was spread online about the identity of the suspect arrested over the stabbing at a children's dance class that killed three little girls.

A major incident was declared after hundreds took to the streets leaving more than 50 officers injured including police dogs. Many were hurt by flying bricks with dozens of officers having to be led away from rioters to get treatment. One male officer appeared to have a head injury as he was driven for hospital treatment. A police riot van, mosque fencing, a pink car and a minimarket was looted during the violence, which has been met with widespread condemnation from locals.

As yet only 4 of the rioters have been arrested!

Surely there is ample video and photo evidence to arrest most of them, if not all?

I’m not pretending the EDL aren’t far right. I said they’re in decline and have no real following.

What I am sick to the back teeth if is everyone who mentions mass immigration and concerns re lack of integration is labelled far right and it’s a slur and used to shut down discussion.

The hooligans last night aren’t open to discussion.

So why were thousands of people in London on Saturday?

M0nica Wed 31-Jul-24 17:56:37

tickingbird News reports (mainstream media) said that Tommy Robinson was encouraging the riots and trying to organise them, even though he is in France at the moment having failed to turn up in court on Monday.

Willowy

^I hope the EDL will become a proscribed group. (ie on the M6 watch list, if they aren't already).*

Frightening naïveté. Don’t you think the security services are run ragged as it is? They’re foiling terror atttacks weekly that we don’t even get to hear about.

This was pre-planned thuggery by drunken louts on a day trip, not an extreme and inappropriate reaction by angry people.

Mobbing a police station and demanding the release of two violent thugs for absolutely no reason other than a power play is not just an angry reaction. More than inappropriate in the eyes of the majority of right minded people.

Not far right!

You cannot pretend that the EDL is far right tickingbird.

‘Who are the English Defence League (EDL)? Founded in 2009, the EDL is a far-right, Islamophobic pressure group. Its members will often mobilise for street demonstrations against immigration and multi-culturalism, and sometimes mount counter-action to protests with progressive aims.’

‘Despite a decline over the past decade, EDL members are known to mobilise after certain events to express anti-Islam views, such as the attack in Southport. Members are thought to have also spread to other far-right groups such as National Action and Patriotic Alternative, which also organise protests.’

From the Independent.

Your mayor? Who’s talking about your mayor? I’ve lost count of the times Labour MP’s rush to appease their core voters and please don’t feign ignorance of whom I refer. I’m not looking to argue.

Growstuff the EDL has been in decline for years and is no longer anything to do with Tommy Robinson (i have no idea if he fronts another group)I don’t even know if the BNP exist anymore.Thugs are thugs regardless of their ethnicity and as for far right don’t make me laugh. Do you seriously believe those hooligans causing trouble last night have a clue about politics? No different to labelling the Leeds rioters as far left.

Interesting that the police, quite rightly in my opinion, used batons and riot shields last night, but took the softly softly approach in Leeds. Some would say that’s two tier policing.

tickingbird There has been a resurgence in the EDL since Elon Musk restored its X (Twitter) account. There were at least 30,000 people at the meeting in London on Saturday.

The hooligans in Southport were followers of Tommy Robinson and anti-Islam. I have absolutely no doubt about it.

Why do you keep trying to make excuses for them?

What they did was disgusting and was encouraged by Robinson, who was on TikTok for hours instigating it. The police were the real target because, according to him, they always victimises him and lets Muslim off leniently. Having watched some of his recordings, it looked as though he was about to blow a gasket.

Oreo Wed 31-Jul-24 16:35:49

Hard to make any sense of the awful tragedy in Southport, or of any such killing and attacks on young children.

Iam64 Wed 31-Jul-24 16:26:41

I’m talking about Andy Burnham who did all he could to inform people not to rush to judgement based on the first video released from Manchester airport.
I agree the thugs aren’t interested or knowledgable about politics. The lot in Southport were anti Muslim

Merseyside Police confirm the 17-year-old suspect was born in Cardiff, contrary to online claims that he was an immigrant who arrived by small boat ‘A 17-year-old male from Banks in Lancashire, who was born in Cardiff, has been arrested on suspicion of murder and attempted murder and has been taken to a police station where he will be interviewed by detectives’.

I saw this in the newspaper yesterday morning.

pascal30, I wouldn’t be surprised if his parents haven’t been moved to a police safe house. Banks a small place, easy to identify his home .

I sincerely hope so Iam

Me too. That would be sensible with tensions so high.

Posters need to stop spouting fake news. It works both ways. The EDL hasn’t existed for over a decade and the BNP probably longer. Rioters yes but labels don’t help and talk of a certain mp making much of this tragedy is also rubbish. No complaints when Labour mp’s rush to cosy up to certain communities and burnish their virtue signalling credentials.

Did people from these communities desecrate a vigil for murdered girls and pre-plan a bust up with police?

I didn’t see either our mayor or the mp for Rochdale ‘rush to cosy up to certain communities and burnish their virtue signalling credentials’.

I was amazed to see a reporter on the news last night standing outside the boys parent's house.. How insensitive can that be... and surprising that his parents haven't been attacked as a result of that.. let's hope it all calms down now.. and the poor police, having been so crucial at the crime scene, can all recover..
