Riots in Southport

I’m fuming about this, allegedly the English Defence League, attacking a local mosque, police attacked and vehicle set on fire. The police have reiterated ‘ the person under arrest was born in the UK’ and to ignore misinformation on social media.
Those poor residents grieving and in shock without the EDL basically stirring.

My guess is the information will be public knowledge in a matter of days, we arent in the 1970s, it is not generally possible to keep that information secret any more.

People have no right to take the law into their own hands. Releasing the name of a minor would just be pandering to them. The irony is that they claim that authorities pander to others, even though the evidence on arrests doesn't support that.

Meanwhile, Tommy Robinson was arrested yesterday, bailed, broke his bail conditions and left the country.

I know that the perpetrator of this horrible attack is only 17 years old, and so given the right to remain anonymous, but I seriously wonder if his identity was released, if it would calm the situation. I wonder if people are aggrieved because they think the authorities are shielding him.

People were fed intentional lies to suit the EDL's agenda. It's too late to stop the aftermath, they do not want the truth. These are not 'reasonable' people

You reckon they have the capacity to think?

No, it's irrelevant. They have no excuse for attacking a mosque and the police, even if the perpetrator were Anjem Choudary.

Infortunately OldFrill it's not possible to eradicate these thugs, but I agree with every other word you've written - including those on GN.

Very shortly after the dreadful incident people were spreading misinformation for their own ends, to invent an excuse to promote their racist agenda and violence. It was SO obvious yet even on Gransnet misinformation was being reposted with the insistence it was true. It is absolutely disgusting. Now is the time for respect, not violence, false accusations, thuggery - idle speculation and abhorrent gossip. The poor children of Southport must be trembling in their beds with fear.
Every thug at that mosque tonight should be eradicated from this earth. Every person spreading false rumours, whether intentional or blindly, should be held to account.
Bless the families, the children, our first responders and all those who hold truth dear.

Guardian article has video of the thugs, yes, identities clear.

How dare the BNP use a community like this in distress?

The attack on the children at that party, Rondoallaturc, is so inconceivable that it is beyond comprehension that anyone, of any race, nationality, colour, age, sex, gender, or faith should even contemplate it. To use it as grounds for attacking anything or anyone until the full facts are known is totally irresponsible, as is making insinuations about UK immigrants.

Well said grumppa.

growstuff Tue 30-Jul-24 23:08:49

Actually, there's already quite a bit of video evidence. Let's see how many people the police identify and arrest.

We dont know many facts about the current situation growstuff.

No, we don't.

However, a certain scumbag of an MP seems to think he knows more than the rest of us and has used the murder of three little girls and injuries to others for his own political point scoring. Absolutely disgusting!

Hard common sense. I applaud you.

I notice the thread about the murders yesterday has disappeared. Is this because of all the wild speculation being posted about the identity of the perpetrator?

That's what GNHQ posted when it was deleted its official reasons.

Might it be an idea to wait. In the same way it was good idea to wait following the first incident.

If course it would be a good idea, but some people don't seem interested in facts.

I'm beyond angry.Without too much detail member of our family is amongst this as an emergency services worker. How utterly disrespectful to a grieving community and those who risked their own lives to respond yesterday. They are just mindless thugs. In other countries the water canons and tear gas would be deployed and tbh tonight i wish they could do that.I'm not sure I will sleep tonight. The poor people of Southport.angry

I did wonder why we got rid of the water cannon to nearby countries not afraid to use them.

Rubber bullets, tear gas?
That might be the only language these mindless thugs understand.

So the right-wing idiots attack a mosque, when the suspect is said to be from a Christian family.......

Much thicker than mince! And so are posts made by people who link this attack with the Ariane Grande concert, when none of us knows who the murderer is.

Wyllow3 Tue 30-Jul-24 22:39:32

We cannot let the English Defence League thugs take over a tragedy and a peaceful vigil for and by the families, friends and neighbours of murdered children, on the basis of what is speculation based on inaccurate social media memes.
