Paul Embery comments on Keir Starmer

Someone mentioned Paul Embery on a thread this week but I can’t find it now. He is an author and Trade Unionist. He was discussing the overuse of the term FarRight.

Tonight he was on TV and he said “ I detect very little goodwill for Starmer and this Government. I say that as a Labour member of 30 years. This is very unlike the public mood in 1997. It does not bode well.”

That really surprised me as I have been watching him for the last year or so and he is Labour through and through and I have never heard him say anything negative about them.

I think you’ll find Labour supporters will be much less surprised.

Indeed, no surprises. Echo chamber.

I just said not everyone watches it. Did you think they did?

Who's having a fit of the vapours? I can't comment on something I haven't seen, and nor can anyone else unless they make it all up.

It's hard to comment without knowing the context and what he actually said.

It was on GBNews.

Well maybe, but if we are to comment on this thread we need to have something to work with - we don't all watch GB News.

Your comment illustrates the very reason I didn’t put a link up.
I didn’t want anyone to have a touch of the vapours.

He is not predictable, he is not tribal, which I like a lot. He talks a lot about class and poverty which I also like.

This, exactly.

oh yes Primrose I was very surprised, I have only ever heard him agreeing with labour policy in the past. He is a good speaker and I was expecting him to totally agree with Starmer. What Embery said did come out of the blue and I could have cheered tbh

Primrose I 100% agree with you. I also heard Paul Embery speak earlier, GBnews on the radio, while I was sewing.

I always forget it’s on the radio too. 🤭

Were you surprised at what he said? Like Galaxy I find him interesting even though I don’t agree with much of what he says. I have never heard him speak out against Labour, EVER.

Casdon Fri 02-Aug-24 20:58:44

Apologies, I should have linked.

He said it on X/Twitter too. I don’t use that.

I think at the moment the government is more focussed on achieving the targets it set for the first 100 days than it is on appeasing the electorate. It’s worth checking out this week’s New Statesman podcast for a review of how things are going so far, the mood in the city etc. I can understand Paul Embery not empathising with the route, it will be interesting to see how his view moves over the next year or so.

All the high ranking ex-police officers I have listened to these past couple of days, including one just on Sky, can’t speak highly enough of Starmer.

He clearly has the confidence of the police, and he clearly is giving the police his full support.

This is the situation as it should be at times like this.

Sorry that wasnt a dig Casdon, it sounded a bit feisty when I read it back, I just meant I agree with your description.

I know, it’s fine

Casdon is right. Blue labour, if we have to put people in boxes.

It’s how he self identifies, which is as good a box as we’ll get.

Oreo Fri 02-Aug-24 20:42:47

It’s true tho that this isn’t like the mood there was around the Tony Blair government when they got it into number ten.

It was me who mentioned him. I find him incredibly interesting.

Paul Embery is Blue Labour.

I’m happy to give Keir Starmer the benefit of the doubt for now. It’s very early days.

I think we should. It’ll take a good few months for our Gov to “bed” in, very few of the cabinet have actually served in govt.

Cossy Fri 02-Aug-24 20:26:47

🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️ I guess Starmer is too centre for him.
