For reference, and to avoid misinformation being given out.

“This week – we are a nation in shock.

A country coming to terms with an attack so inexplicably vile…

That fear is an understandable reaction.

Our first thoughts of course are with the families at the heart of this…

Their pain is unimaginable.

And so I call on everyone to give them and indeed the wider community at Southport…

The space to grieve.

And time for the authorities in Merseyside…

To do their job.

There will be a time for questions.

And we will make sure that the victims and families in Southport…

Are at the heart of that process…

That’s the very least that we owe these families.

But we also owe them justice.

So while there’s a prosecution that must not be prejudiced…

For them to receive the justice that they deserve…

The time for answering those questions is not now.

And I remind everyone that the price for a trial that is prejudiced…

Is ultimately paid by the victims and their families.

Who are deprived of the justice that they deserve.

Let me turn now to the actions of a tiny, mindless minority in our society.

Because in the aftermath of this attack

The community of Southport had to suffer twice.

A gang of thugs, got on trains and busses…

Went to a community that is not their own…

A community grieving the most horrific tragedy…

And then proceeded to throw bricks at police officers.

Police officers who just 24 hours earlier…

Had been having to deal with an attack on children in their community.

Their community.

And make no mistake…

Whether it’s in Southport, London – or Hartlepool…

These people are showing our country exactly who they are.

Mosques targeted because they are Mosques.

Flares thrown at the statue of Winston Churchill.

A Nazi salute at the Cenotaph.

And so I’ve just held a meeting with senior police and law enforcement leaders…

Where we’ve resolved to show who we are.

A country – that will not allow understandable fear…

To curdle into division and hate in our communities.

And that will not permit, under any circumstances…

A breakdown in law and order on our streets.

Because let’s be very clear about this.

It’s not protest.

It’s not legitimate.

It’s crime…

Violent disorder.

An assault on the rule of law and the execution of justice.

And so on behalf of the British people…

Who expect their values and their security to be upheld…

We will put a stop to it.

I want to thank all of the police officers, across the country…

Who have already, as they so often do…

Stood up to intimidation and violence in the past few days…

And indeed, throughout the summer.

And let me be clear – the meeting this afternoon was not about pointing the finger of blame…

That is not how this Government of Service conducts its business…

Because it doesn’t work.

Rather – this was a meeting to pull together our response…

A response both to the immediate challenge…

Which is clearly driven by far-right hatred.

But also - all violent disorder that flares up.

Whatever the apparent cause or motivation – we make no distinction…

Crime is crime.

And so - to that end…

I can announce today, that following this meeting…

we will establish a national capability, across police forces…

To tackle violent disorder.

These thugs are mobile…

They move from community to community…

And we must have a policing response that can do the same.

Shared intelligence…

Wider deployment of facial recognition technology…

And preventive action – criminal behaviour orders…

To restrict their movements…

Before they can even board a train…

In just the same way we do with football hooligans.

And let me also say to large social media companies and those who run them…

Violent disorder clearly whipped up online…

That is also a crime.

It’s happening on your premises.

And the law must be upheld everywhere.

That is the single most important duty of Government…

Service rests on security.

And we will take all necessary action…

To keep our streets safe”

From the Guardian, regarding his speech of 20 minutes ago:

Keir Starmer tells rioters "you will regret it" in address

Keir Starmer said he could “guarantee” rioters will “regret taking part in this disorder” as he condemned an attack on a hotel housing asylum seekers in Rotherham and branded the action “far-right thuggery”.

The prime minister vowed “we will do whatever it takes to bring these thugs to justice” as he addressed the nation following ongoing unrest across parts of the country.

He added: “I guarantee you will regret taking part in this disorder, whether directly or those whipping up this action online and then running away themselves.

“This is not a protest, it is organised, violent thuggery and it has no place on our streets or online.”

Interesting from a commentator who said that Starmer’s position is the polar opposite to Trump’s position when faced with rioting in the USA .

Trump argued that there was good on both sides.

Starmer has instead chosen to unequivocally condemn the rioters.

As have many of us

Doodledog Sun 04-Aug-24 17:49:08

Thank you, WWM.

There is a huge difference between protest and riot. I’ve just seen Starmer on the News Channel, and think his ‘Far right thuggery’ speech is spot on. The scenes in Rotherham are shameful.

It’s good to see Cleverly and Tugendhat supporting him too (or saying similar things anyway).

JanetPiper Sun 04-Aug-24 17:51:12

The word 'thugs' is from a tribe in India (Thugees) - how ironic

Mollygo Sun 04-Aug-24 17:52:55

The use of far right thuggery or right wing thugs is provided by Starmer saying

A response both to the immediate challenge…
Which is clearly driven by far-right hatred.
and
These thugs are mobile…
So combining far right hatred and thugs into right wing thuggery is not so far fetched.

I think he talked a good talk. Walking the walk will be harder.

JanetPiper Sun 04-Aug-24 17:53:47

Trump intends to Stop the influx of foreign criminals into his Country though, to protect it's citizens?! Would anyone agree with that here?

It certainly will, and if we are sensible he will get our full support otherwise we can see the result.

The thugs are attacking private residences in Middlesbrough now.

I thought it was a good speech when I heard it reported on the news.
I don’t think any PM of our country, whatever their political party, would have said anything much different.

What I thought too, a good speech and would I hope have been said by any UK PM.
What we need in the meantime is a good thunderstorm.

Is that Trump the convicted felon?

Whitewavemark2 Sun 04-Aug-24 17:59:42

The trouble is that the police are so stretched that they are finding it difficult to contain the thugs.

Oreo Sun 04-Aug-24 18:02:22

All leave will be cancelled and forces combine in troubled areas.

Really? Last time he was POTUS he prevented legitimate migrants from re-entering the USA.

He has to be elected before he can do anything at all. I have no respect for somebody who promotes lawlessness in his own country, and perpetuates Americans murdering many other Americans due to supporting lack of gun possession laws. That is far more of an issue there.

when Anjem Choudray preached in mosques inciting mentally ill attenders to go out and murder people, years ago, and he has only just been jailed, people must think this is 2 tier policing, as Starmer is protecting mosques, but what about protecting us from people like Choudray? I absolutely agree that thugs from ANY 'community' attacking a scaring people and the police, burning police cars , throwing bricks, breaking windows, looting, etc need to be in court and answer for their crimes

LizzieDrip Mon 05-Aug-24 12:44:06

but what about protecting us from people like Choudray

Nan0 the very police who were attacked by rioting yobs are the same police who do protect us from people like Choudray!

LizzieDrip Mon 05-Aug-24 12:53:19

Of course, Nan0, very, very few Muslim people are criminals like Choudray.

LauraNorderr Mon 05-Aug-24 13:04:30

I thought Keir Starmer gave a good, sincere and forthright speech. I judge him to be a credible and honest politician, an intelligent man. A sincere family man.
If this next five years pans out the way he clearly hopes then he may get my vote.
His cabinet though have to prove themselves before I switch allegiance for the first time in my life.
The hatred leading to this thuggery can only be stamped out with education, education, education. The media, politicians and public have a huge role to play in using appropriate language, only giving proven facts and showing, what I hope still exists, our traditional tolerance and compassion to others.

Joseann Mon 05-Aug-24 13:10:17

I think I said earlier, the speech was good.
But surely someone in his office can proofread better and correct the spelling of busses to buses! 🚌 🚌
Sorry.

Of course, Nan0, very, very few Muslim people are criminals like Choudray.

And the secret services have people like him on their watch lists ...he had been Belmarsh already - this is the story of it - it includes how cunning he was never to publicly advocate violence - eventually he was caught in a sting operation where US/UK secret service infiltrated his organisation.

I'd like to see attention turned, as I suspect it is already, towards those inciting violence currently. but its clearly very difficult to penetrate complex SM organising.

Wyllow3 Mon 05-Aug-24 13:48:20

sorry, reference: www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c729598n1d4o

Doodledog Mon 05-Aug-24 13:55:30

It is a delicate balancing act to both keep freedom of speech and deter those who incite others to violence. Choudary is one such, Farage is another. Both clever and capable of saying a lot and implying more, whilst keeping it deniable.

Cagsy Mon 05-Aug-24 14:03:22

I agree Doodledog

Of course it will, and the police will accept their cancelled family plans and wasted expenses as they always do. Let's hope their efforts get some wider appreciation rather than the blanket condemnation some are quick to give.

Starmer's speech was excellent. Measured but forceful, I hope he can get a grip on this situation. I also hope the judges will give out more than slapped wrists when offenders are brought to court.
