Social Media - aiding and abetting

I’ve been looking at how SM has helped fuel the current round of violence egged on by people like Farage, Tate, Robinson, and Musk, and wondering how people of peace and harmony can counteract their malevolent influence, and it occurs to me that SM can in fact work to the intelligence services advantage.

Because as much as the men of violence are trying to break down our societal values, it is all there for the authorities to use as evidence as they surely will.

In fact I am beginning to think it actually makes their life easier , in a weird sort of way.

So all the platforms are available including even Tik Tok which although immediately vanishes remains on hard drive for the police to down load and that as well as CCTV, body-cameras, drone footage and videos posted by the public almost gives them an embarrassment of evidence.

“Crown Prosecution Service
@CPSUK
Think before you post! 📲✋ Content that incites violence or hatred isn't just harmful - it can be illegal.

The CPS takes online violence seriously and will prosecute when the legal test is met. Remind those close to you to share responsibly or face the consequences”

There is clearly much greater intolerance for online hate.

Oreo - that’s your view of why many people chose to come to the uk rather than stay in France. It’s a view shared by many on this forum but not by many others
The obvious and often debated here, reason people come is because they have family here. Because their home country has historical lungs so English is a second language. I’ll stop there but the response to sazl stands. Start a specific thread if your question is genuine

I agree, and I’ve actually started one for her under News & Pilitics, with lots of informative links.

Surely our intelligence services are sophisticated enough to access Telegram!

If not, it’s time for them to step up and treat this for what it is … cyber terrorism.

What is telegram? Is like what they sent in the old days

Is that what Belgium does? I didn’t know.

Casdon Sun 11-Aug-24 15:08:28

Because it’s much smaller and more overcrowded than the UK? Seriously, the argument that the UK is too small holds no water. If we grew all our own food for the population, and weren’t one of the richest nations in the world, and didn’t allow any legal migration then maybe.

Mollygo Sun 11-Aug-24 14:44:36

. Shouldn’t Belgium take any?

That’s an even dafter argument

Why wouldn’t they?

Casdon Sun 11-Aug-24 14:41:29

^Exactly - and as vegansrock says, France takes more refugees than the uk^

True, but France is about 2.3 times bigger than United Kingdom.bigger than the UK and has a smaller population.

Without social media lots of things that are bad would end. Protests turning violent would still happen but be much smaller, terrorists arranging terrible atrocities would likely be found out faster as phone tapping by police would expose them, many drug runs, county lines etc. and also the criminal gangs who organise the boats would find it harder to sort. Bullying is mainly on FB messenger and dangerous tiktok challenges would end.
Sad that these sites have attracted criminals when they are v good for keeping long-distance families and friends intouch.

I do agree that there is a very dark side to SM, but without now we wouldn’t be able to discuss/debate/argue with each other, so I think there’s also a great positive side of it which out ways the negatives.

That's a very rude reply. I am asking as I genuinely don't understand why they risk their lives to get here when France is a beautiful country. If you know why please enlighten me.

I’ve started a thread and put some links on for you. flowers

Well yes. Any country with land borders is going to be the first safe country long before an island. I think the idea that people should stay in the first place that they are safe is an excuse to stop the UK from taking anyone.

France takes more refugees than the U.K.- so the idea that they all come here is erroneous.

Mollygo Sun 11-Aug-24 13:11:37

Watching the Olympics supports the idea that people come to the UK because they speak the language. How many athletes from other countries can speak English?

61 arrests in Hull now.

Source - My Community Alert email from Humberside Police

No further disorder in Hull this weekend
Whilst two protests have taken place today (Saturday, 10 August) in the city of Hull, they were conducted peacefully and without any disorder or arrests made.

Humberside Police Deputy Chief Constable Dave Marshall said: “We were aware of potential, planned protests for today and we have ensured we have been well resourced with a highly visible police presence across the city.

“Specialist and Neighbourhood officers have been on patrol to offer reassurance and to deal with any emerging issues quickly and efficiently should they have occurred.

“I can confirm that whilst two protests did take place, they were carried out peacefully and there was no disorder before, during, or after these events. No offences were committed, and no arrests were made.

“A third planned protest within the city was cancelled by the organiser and no participants attended.

“The scenes we saw in our city last Saturday (3 August) were utterly shameful, however, we have taken robust action over the last week to get those who committed offences against our community off our streets.

“A total of 61 people have now been arrested, with 22 charged, and three already convicted for a total of seven years and eight months for their involvement in the violent disorder.

“I am incredibly grateful to see how our communities have pulled together to support our officers on the ground, along with other goodwill gestures which have all been much appreciated by officers, partners, and local businesses since the event of last weekend.

“We are seeing a return to normality within Hull and across our force area. However, I understand that communities and businesses may continue to feel nervous, but I would like to offer reassurance and thank people for returning to the city and supporting businesses and events following last week’s disorder.

“We will continue to pursue those that became involved in last week’s events, and I would urge anyone with any information that may help with our ongoing investigation into the Hull disorder, to please contact our non-emergency number 101 quoting Operation Executive.

11 police were injured in the Hull attacks. 3 arrests.

Diana Johnson is another calling for more action as regards some social media platforms, but I'm not clear how it all can be done.

Slightly off topic but can anyone enlighten me as to why the boat people don't want to stay in France. As far as I know France has a good health care system and great pensions, similar climate to us etc.

Nobody knows how to answer that question sazzl but my feeling is they think the UK will give them more once here than the French.

Cressida Sun 11-Aug-24 12:25:57

The Policing Minister is the MP for Hull Dame Diana Johnson.
Last week she was in Hull talking to Humberside Police following serious rioting in Hull. She spoke to the local paper and BBC Look North.

But Sazz1 this thread is about the role SM is playing in the current riots / unrest. I know threads sometimes meander off topic but …???

Sazz stop pretending to be just asking a question. It's disingenuous and falsely naïve. And it does go off topic. Start your own thread

I second that and if you do start your own thread you’ll find the answers!
