The real worry is that if this continues, meaning both groups keep clogging up city centres, or even just one group keeps on doing it in their hundreds, shops and businesses will suffer and so will people trying to get from a to b.
It all needs policing heavily too.Last night was fine as an antidote but more nights won’t be fine.

Don’t mess with the tolerant people in Brighton.
(357 Posts)So, the fascists turned up outside of the targeted building, and as far as I can see the road is full of the tolerant folk who are as someone said are really tolerant of tolerance, and very intolerant of intolerance.
I've no idea if it's true, but the word here in Brighton is that the fascists were met off the trains by drag queens and a samba band.
You don't have to be an idiot to bring white supremacy to the most welcoming and inclusive city in the country, but it sure helps

Protests, probably the usual rent a mob hellbent on rioting, due in Newcastle too. I’m hoping the Toon Army will turn out in force and have the same calming outcome as seen in Brighton (and other places).
There was a peaceful protest in the west end of Newcastle. Good on them.

You sound as if you are placing similar blame on both groups.
Try this
The far right thugs stop rioting and the people of peace will have no reason to turn out.
I can’t see any element of blame, that’s your take on it.
I simply mean my comment to be read as it’s written which couldn't be any plainer.
The Police really want people to stay at home now and they will deal with any further disruption/ disorder.
Glad you made it plain
When the weather gets colder/ wetter/ darker nights/ schools go back the rioting will stop.
I've been looking at I player news feed as it gives pictures and descriptions of the anti-riot demonstrations run the country. Not only some heart-warming moments and quotes cheering to look at, but also the nature of the different responses. Brighton was a one off in a way, very "Brighton"!
Two thoughts: I have no doubt that many of the people turning out in some areas were not heavily political but ordinary "not on my name" locals, and this really needed to happen as a response.
But there were a very small number willing to "fight it out". And this is inappropriate and counter productive.
not run the country but around the country.
The photos from all over the country by Joanne ? think from the guardian were really uplift ing. Sorry I cant attach it here.
Surely seeing people turn out to counter racism within their communities is a very positive thing? Hopefully it will say to people who have been subjected to racist behaviour that most of the people who live on this island are not racist, will not tolerate racism and celebrate diversity. For those who do harbour racist thoughts, perhaps they will think twice before sharing those thoughts on the basis it is what they imagine other people think because clearly, they don't!
I also think that the veiled racism we so often read has to be stopped as it adds to the environment of intolerance and lies.

I didn’t think much would happen last night. They’ve had almost a week of rioting so they’re done.
Unfortunately though, I don’t think a few drag queens sprinkling glitter is enough to save this severely divided, utterly f**ked up country.
Rubbish, the peaceful protesters are fast outnumbering the rioters, if they haven't way outnumbered them already, in a truly marvellous show of typical British tolerance and community solidarity.
We must also remember the immediate community efforts to clean up after the riots and help those whose houses and businesses had been damaged.
All I am waiting for is Elon Musk to jump to the media to acknowledge the way community effort has made the violent protester look the pathetic bunch of losers they really are.

And before the anti-immigrants start jumping up and down..
Yes immigration will have to be dealt with, but dealt with in a grownup, non-populist way, where policy decisions are made and the rhetoric has gone, with immigration firmly put into its place alongside other issues so many left by the Tory government.
.
Childhood poverty is a good start point imo.Am not sure who you are labelling anti-immigrants, we need legal chosen immigration in the right numbers but not any other kind.Even the present government agrees on that.
I do agree tho on your last paragraph about it being dealt with properly.
I think you are probably one of the 'anti-immigrants Wwmk2 had in mind.
We are in the current mess because the tories picked immigration to focus on for purely populist reasons. Labour has no need to follow their example. We have a system of control already, it needs to be effectively administered, but there is no need for it to be high profile.
Labour needs to be focussed on the issues which made people vulnerable to manipulation over immigration. Thatnmade them receptive to the ideas of 'overcrowding, which let the tories off the hook for their destruction of the public sector infrastructure because they could just point to 'immigrants', asylum seekers in particular, to blame for lack of housing, gp appointments, NHS dentists etc. 'Controlling immigration' was a smokescreen. A smokescreen that Labour shouldn't be distracted by.

Wonderful.
I look forward to a truly beautiful future, where we all skip happily through life hand in hand, with nothing but love & tolerance in our hearts.

Oh Kandinsky, who openly supports Farage and co.
I don’t know if Whitewavemark2 means me MaizieD or other posters or just in the country.
Where do I say I’m anti immigrant on this thread or any other?
I agree with the government on immigration, that means legal admitted immigration where we need it, assessing those who arrive by small boat and claim to be asylum seekers and keeping those who are genuine and deporting economic migrants.
4 million people voted for the reform party just a few months ago.
Funnily enough I wasn’t one of them.
Still ….4 million people agreeing with and liking Farage. If I were you I wouldn’t think about it. Those numbers might upset you.
I can’t agree with a word of what you write about immigration MaizieD and fortunately nor does this government.
I get the sense that less people would vote Reform now than did a month ago, Tommy Robinson and Andrew Tait supporters have turned against him. I think the rioting will not help Reform’s corner either - time will tell on that nest time the polls are out, I guess in September now.

Which leaves how many who didn’t?
That cheers me.
But Farage is useless as a constituent MP, and I have no doubt they will live to regret their vote.
Kandinsky why so angry and bitter?
If this country is truly f**cked up, as you say, why would you want to remain here?

Fortunately Kandinsky, you aren’t me, or any of the posters here whose more positive take on events last night you sneer at.
It does worry me that so many voted Farage. I wish they’d stayed with the Conservatives but of course, currently that party is a spent force. Let’s hope it rallies so we can have a decent opposition rather than Farage and his merry men.
Meanwhile I wish our government well and best endeavours in sorting out the unholy mess the last 14 years has left them with
I think more, especially in northern cities. I suppose it depends how Starmer gets on.
I am so heartened by last night I am so joyful to know I m not the only dammed person in this country, who cares, it’s really lifted my spirits.
We are millions more and we must not be afraid to voice our care and support we need to all work together black, white and brown, forget colour see people for what they are not what their skin is like. A bad person is bad not because of his skin or his birthplace don’t be afraid, say good morning to your Muslim or Jewish neighbour smile at people acknowledge them it will come back four fold
