The tide has turned

According to Chief Constable Gavin Stephens, one of the UK’s most senior police officers.

But he stressed there was no room for complacency, with the police now “very focused on the weekend" with “many potential events still being advertised and circulated online”.

He then goes on to talk about the 6000 standing army of police, intelligence, Swift justice and the fact that the level of involved citizens who turned out in such force of numbers that it was impossible for the thugs to get to their targets.

People power!

I’m sure many of us felt something had happened on Wednesday evening when the country made it clear that they will not stand for such thuggery directed towards innocent people and so it has proved.

Of course it is early days and Home Secretary Yvette Cooper asked if she believed Wednesday night marked an end to the violence she told said that the government was “not going to take its foot off the pedal on this”.

“The police and the criminal justice system all have our strong support to keep going and keep making sure criminals pay the price for the kind of violent disorder, the thuggery, the extremism and the intimidation we have seen in communities. We will not stand for this violence,” she said.

I think we can begin to breath

It was quite irritating WWgrin, I found Jo Coxs whole approach interesting and the foundation did some good work certainly at the beginning.
I am afraid I view him as one of the many 'good guys' who are anything but.

I dont have anything to do with anything relating to Brendan Cox I had to stop my involvement with the Jo Cox organisation until his involvement stopped.

😄😄 I’m sorry but you make me giggle.

I don’t mean it in a nasty way at all, so please don’t be offended.

Nothing wrong with your brain

grinThanks WW - I am beginning to wonder at timesgrin

I won’t respond to Urmstongran’s post again. On reflection, I won’t give it the oxygen. I agree Grandmabatty; I believe that person’s post was disingenuous and designed to stir up controversy. How sad!

Whitewavemark2 Fri 09-Aug-24 12:32:35

It was started by Joe Cox’s partner after her assassination, to counteract the fascists.

It is still doing the same as far as I can see.

Well done them.

Hope not Hate? Hahaha!
This guy was the one I posted about last week. Tweeted about an acid attack on a woman … that never happened. Can’t remember his name. Richard somebody? Anyway he was called out on it. Apologised for posting WITHOUT CHECKING the veracity (oh the irony) and deleted it. On his ‘influential’ platform too.

Yes! He's apologised. Do you have any other concerns about HopeNotHate? Have you ever looked at the kind of work they do?

I've read through this thread and it's disturbing to see that a few, very few, want to fuel the unrest by posting about two tier policing which doesn't exist.
There is a thread running thanking the police which counteracts some of the negativity from those few posters.

This reflects the successful turnout of people trying to prevent the thugs from May-hem.

Far right, and fascism is not wanted here.

This

From Hope not Hate

*A man is in custody for using social media to encourage violent disorder across the country following a dossier HOPE not hate supplied to the police.

As the matter is now subjudice, we will not be making any further comment at this stage*

I bet they have others.

Derail not detail

Grandmabatty Fri 09-Aug-24 11:04:58

I find it sad that a poster felt it necessary to detail such a positive thread almost as soon as it began. I think the alleged purpose was disingenuous. It's been a very unsettling time for people, some of whom have been directly impacted by riots. Any attempt to calm things down is surely welcome.

WW I’ve asked for my post to be removed.

I’m really sorry - thanks for your generous replyflowers

I think all this stuff is mashing my brain now!

Blimey lizzie I’d be a bit sad to get peeved at that little thing.

I wouldn’t have bothered to remove it quite honestly😀

If they do, it will make the problem a thousand times worse.
I still have some sort of faith that Starmer wont do that. He did like a bit of authoritarianism within the labour partygrin but am hoping it's not generally his style.

Well I don’t think a thousand times worse, but I can definitely see major issues. However, like you I am hoping that it won’t be necessary.

Never the less I think that it is undeniable that on line influence is causing the country a serious problem.

So we shall see

WW I can’t apologise enough. I’ll ask for my post to be removed and start again😱

In all of this my support and admiration is for the police. There have been reports of police officers standing in line between the anti-immigration and the pro-immigration groups. Both groups are shouting at and goading the police.

We now have a police officer who used pepper spray on someone resisting arrest (including grabbing another officer by his genitals) and has now been suspended and is facing prosecution. It seems the police can no longer defend themselves or their colleagues

Grandmabatty Fri 09-Aug-24 10:32:50

Lizziedrip it was most certainly not the OP who said what you have quoted but another poster.
