According to Chief Constable Gavin Stephens, one of the UK’s most senior police officers.

But he stressed there was no room for complacency, with the police now “very focused on the weekend" with “many potential events still being advertised and circulated online”.

He then goes on to talk about the 6000 standing army of police, intelligence, Swift justice and the fact that the level of involved citizens who turned out in such force of numbers that it was impossible for the thugs to get to their targets.

People power!

I’m sure many of us felt something had happened on Wednesday evening when the country made it clear that they will not stand for such thuggery directed towards innocent people and so it has proved.

Of course it is early days and Home Secretary Yvette Cooper asked if she believed Wednesday night marked an end to the violence she told said that the government was “not going to take its foot off the pedal on this”.

“The police and the criminal justice system all have our strong support to keep going and keep making sure criminals pay the price for the kind of violent disorder, the thuggery, the extremism and the intimidation we have seen in communities. We will not stand for this violence,” she said.

I think we can begin to breath

I don't subscribe. It just popped up on You Tube and shocked me.

MaizieD Sat 10-Aug-24 16:31:58

I didn't have to subscribe to watch. I followed Chestnut's link too.

MaizieD Sat 10-Aug-24 16:30:35

The youtube clip was GB news.

A smashed statue at a church. No cowering christians, though..

LizzieDrip Sat 10-Aug-24 16:27:04

Chestnut I’ve tried to watch the video via your link, but it’s from GB News and says I need to subscribe in order to watch it. So can’t access it I’m afraid🤷‍♀️

Therefore, won’t comment.

Chestnut - the only verifiable concern I could find was a stabbing in the grounds or nearby a Church in Croydon. Are you suggesting that if we had a ‘Christian Church attacked and Christians terrified in our own country’ that the newspapers and ch4, bbc news would have conspired to keep this from being reported?
The Daily Mail would have been all over it

Grandmabatty Sat 10-Aug-24 16:03:35

I would be careful of posting things from YouTube which aren't verified. You could easily be accused of incitement.

Cadeby Sat 10-Aug-24 16:03:13

I don't think anybody is saying the underlying issues have been resolved.

I feel like we have stepped back a little from the precipice.

Years of underfunding, virtually no public services and poor decisions all round by " both sides" of the political divide.

No Farage-riots tonight.

Are you listening Musk?

No civil war in the U.K.

It all sounds great until you see the things which are rarely shown or reported on. Here we have a Christian church in Croydon attacked and Christians terrified in our own country. This popped upon You Tube. You need to watch this before commenting.

The reasons behind the riots are still bubbling away and can only get more intense. I never thought I'd see such a thing in our own country. It makes me weep.

That has been covered several times. If you plead guilty you get a third off your sentence as it saves time and money. If you don’t, then a case against you has to be built, in the interests of justice and expediency. The authorities then have 2 choices - either to bail you (as with the men in question) or remand in custody. Given the way the criminal justice system and prisons have been allowed to decay over the past 14 years, the latter is an expensive and logistically difficult option.

There is little point in explaining something to someone who has no intention of letting factual information change their mind.

I've seen this happen time and time again over the years... 😟

Ain't that the truth?

They Come Ere and take Our Jobs ( but in different wrapping paper)

Doodledog Sat 10-Aug-24 07:40:30

I don’t know what Australian media has told you, but whereas the riots have been awful, and absolutely had to be stopped, it is not, and has never approached, civil war. It is only the likes of Musk who have used inflammatory language like that.

There has been one ‘side’ doing the rioting and on the other ‘side’ were the police and those who wanted to stop the violence. As always, there are drunks and coked-up idiots who would attach themselves to any disorder, but this has not been about factions fighting one another.

The anti-rioters were ordinary people protesting against thuggery - as they are entitled to do under the law - and as far as I am aware weren’t retaliating with violence. I don’t think any protesters were arrested (although the arrests are still ongoing). They were showing solidarity with the people under attack, rather than engaging in running battles with the rioters.

A civil war needs at least two ‘armies’ and this has not been the case. Civil disorder, yes, but to suggest civil war is dangerous and very wide of the mark.

Well at least Starmer has done something because if he hadn’t there could have been an escalation and things would be out of control. It wouldn’t be good for a civil war to happen. Leave that to the Americans after their next elections !

The good news is that if the arrests are the tip of an iceberg, we have a new government in power, and its leader has promised to do something about the delays in the legal system, as well as so many other things that have been allowed to slide.

I'm inclined to believe that he will keep his promises much more than the string ofTory leaders he's replaced. I very much hope so.

I agree with you on that.
Mind you I think a healthy dose of cynicism or at least a dash of it keeps a good balance, nothing and nobody is going to do a superb all round job where politics and politicians is concerned and a questioning attitude is just fine to most situations.
I think Starmer will at least try to get things right.Rachel Reeves am disappointed in so far.Not only for cutting the WFA but for what sounds very like excuses for yet more years of austerity measures. We shall see I guess.

Two Asian men just been sentenced for aggravated after they attacked a group of white men who were in an anti immigrant demo in Leeds. Hopefully demonstrating violent behaviour from whoever is not tolerated.

Yes. I saw that in the news. I think it puts paid to the talk of there being a two tier system. Thankfully.

It doesn’t at all. That’s just the tip of a huge iceberg.

Are you Farage’s mouth piece?

This is just a conspiracy theory and needs knocking on the head.

It is wrong

Not true

A lie

Incites discontent

How come then the two thugs who broke the PoliceWoman’s nose are still not locked up then?

Iam64 Fri 09-Aug-24 21:23:52

Charles has spoken to Starmer by phone telling him that he hopes our shared values continue to unit the nation.

He also thanked the police for their work.

Good man

I’ve felt for a while that Charles and Keir share values, one of the main things being a love of the UK. The King has attended several events that a reining monarch might not have been to in the past. I think they have a good working relationship and long may it continue.

Ordinary people, the government, the police, mosques, churches and so on are tying themselves in knots trying to be fair minded and decent, but no. We now have talk of an iceberg.
More dissent and unpleasantness.

I saw that. It’s a relief to know that racism is acknowledged as a two way thing now.

Back in Liverpool in the 70-80s it was seen as a one way thing. Complaining about abuse was only acknowledged one way.

Thankfully we are not in the 1970's.
