When Labour came to power, I decided to give them the benefit of the doubt, some good decisions were made such as James Timpson appointed Minister of prisons, I was feeling positive.
However, as my husband predicted, it wouldn’t last.
Removing the winter fuel allowance and the cap on nursing home fees was dreadful but her latest move is beyond comprehension.
Angela Rayner has dropped Tory plans to limit applications for social housing to long-term British residents.
The Housing Secretary has formally scrapped reforms that would have prevented recently arrived migrants from applying for a council house in England.
Enough is enough!

I say speed up processing so that those whose asylum application is valid can get a job to contribute to our economy and get on with their lives. Having working age people festering in run-down hotels for years is just asking for them to turn to other activities, out of boredom if nothing else.
Yes!
Totally agree!

I totally agree with you. Way too early to make such sweeping criticism.
Let us just wait and see how things pan out and then decide!!

‘Once remain to leave is granted migrants have less chances of securing social housing than most Brits, not more.’
This really depends on where you live. In my area once you have been granted leave to remain, the council will allocate you a property within seven days. I know this because I work with the person who allocates the properties. They are offered three properties, one after the other, and if they don’t accept one they are then put on the waiting list. There are people who have been on the waiting list over ten years and will probably never be housed. The son and family of a colleague were told by the council to find their own private accommodation due to the long waiting list.
DaddyNan that’s exactly the situation on DGD and her fiancé are in, except they are living with parents.
Can’t go on the list unless parents chuck them out, then told they’d do better by finding their own private accommodation because the list is so long.
Well written ‘Undies ‘
But of course once they have a small mini mart that stays open all hours and a cheap as chips car wash run by said immigrants my experience is that they will probs shut up about it
So very true, but there are people who actually complain that such shops are all run by ‘foreigners’.
I finally retired this year at 66, i was so disappointed to hear i will now not get the HA, I live alone and living on just a basic state pension , I tried for pension credits but was refused, things are going to get hard
it was withdrawn because of obligation to house immigrant family
I don't think so.
Really!,,
So, some of you think and believe that immigrants are going to be given council houses.
They’ve all been sold of.
There just aren’t enough.

I have also come across this situation.
Daughter, Son-in-law, child living with her Mother but on housing list. Allocated house - went to measure for carpet and curtains then told that it was withdrawn because of obligation to house immigrant family.
This is not right or fair and you can see where discontent with any Government is coming from.

I am not a fan of Starmer but to give him his due, he did say before the election that the mess that the Tories were leaving would take years to sort out. It seems that the financial situation was much worse than expected. Labour have to try and prioritise which things to try and sort out first as they can't possibly fix everything in one go. I will miss my fuel allowance but it not right that people who don't need certain benefits still receive everything. People who really need it will get it.
And some people, a lot, who really need it won’t now get it.
Incoming governments always say that the last lot left the country in a mess and hard up.A complete fiction whichever side says it.
missdeke Well - he would say that, wouldn't he?
It's not what they are doing that annoys me it's the fact that they are doing exactly what they said they wouldn't do. They lied and they back tracked. On lots of things. They appear to be picking on the people that have no clout to go on strike or to make a protest about what's happening. I am fairly lucky in that I can probably manage to hold out for 5 years to see what happens but there's many pensioners that probably won't and will be pushed into a poverty where they are only just not eligible for pension credit. I personally know at least two in that situation.

OP, Labour have been in office for six weeks! I think your comments show more than a touch of short termism. Giving immigrants the right to apply for council housing does not mean they will be given it. They’ll have to wait until they qualify.

Rayner has now come up with what she thinks is a brilliant plan - Operation Scatter.
She is going to scatter asylum seekers around the UK in former care homes, empty houses etc.
That’s Yvette Cooper, not Angela Rayner

We would all love to live in Westminster, Kensington or Chelsea but we can’t.
What people describe as basic rights for newcomers are often denied to people who are already here.
Those seeking asylum should rightly have a place of safety, food, drink and local services like schools and medical care. This doesn’t mean an 3 bed flat in Pimlico! Obviously some cash for day to day needs.
They should be offered free language lessons to help them integrate- especially important so that children don’t have to translate. It also offers some safeguard to women who may be in abusive relationships.
Those simply wanting a better life should be directed to the best legal route and offered basic support until they can return to their home countries to apply by the normal routes.
If local people are in temporary housing for years I fail to see why newcomers can’t wait in the queue.
A while back I looked into living in the US for a year. The processes are extremely complex. This is the reality of immigration into any country.

Despite what people may say about our 'democracy' and this government having been 'voted in' the truth is we do not have true democracy. This government was elected by about a third of the people, and I'm willing to bet about half of them only wanted the Tories out. Now they are acting as if they have a massive mandate to do exactly what they want and the signs are very alarming. The people of Britain who want more control of immigration have no voice at all. People are seeing their communities destroyed and their compatriots sleeping in shop doorways, while some often dubious characters are welcomed and given housing and benefits, no question. This resentment is behind the recent unrest. Please note I DO NOT CONDONE VIOLENCE, before anyone screams 'fascist' at me. But it's not fair to brand as fascist anyone who objects to uncontrolled immigration. The facts, as always, can be hard to determine. But anyone who supports uncontrolled immigration and expects communities to open up and welcome crowds of single males (and yes, we are often not talking families, not talking actual refugees) should be prepared to have a hostel opened up next door, and see how they feel about young men from cultures that may be more brutal, roaming about, not integrating, and causing unease (at the least) to their own daughters and sons, and bringing down the value of their property into the bargain.
The point of our democratic voting system, flawed as it is, is that it’s the same one which gave Tories power for 14 years. I heard no one moaning about then!
I’ve heard no one, ever, not one person, state that they want uncontrolled immigration? Who would?
The really is weird strange thing is that “asylum seekers” make up 11% roughly of ALL immigration, and less than 2% of our overall population.
Everyone opposes uncontrolled immigration, though, surely?

Couldn't have put it better myself.
"There are none so blind as those who will not see"
Labour didn't remove the cap on nursing home fees as it was never brought in by the tories. It was just talked about. They had 14 years to bring it in but didn't. Elderly care used to be covered by the NHS, but Margaret Thatcher privatised it and made it profit making, pushing the prices up.
I think the tories were a disaster. They bumbled out of the single market with no benefits, only damage to business. They ran public services into the ground and left us in a lot of debt.
Until we know what, if any, alternative arrangements will be made for the people who are going to struggle to pay their fuel bills this winter (not just pensioners) I think it’s premature to be so critical. Anybody who argues that a universal benefit given to people who don’t need financial help should continue will never get my support, or the support of millions of working people. None of us want anybody to be cold, but there are many more ways than WFP to skin this particular cat.
