Labour……I really tried but have now given up!

When Labour came to power, I decided to give them the benefit of the doubt, some good decisions were made such as James Timpson appointed Minister of prisons, I was feeling positive.

However, as my husband predicted, it wouldn’t last.

Removing the winter fuel allowance and the cap on nursing home fees was dreadful but her latest move is beyond comprehension.

Angela Rayner has dropped Tory plans to limit applications for social housing to long-term British residents.

The Housing Secretary has formally scrapped reforms that would have prevented recently arrived migrants from applying for a council house in England.

Enough is enough!

I am not a fan of Starmer but to give him his due, he did say before the election that the mess that the Tories were leaving would take years to sort out. It seems that the financial situation was much worse than expected. Labour have to try and prioritise which things to try and sort out first as they can't possibly fix everything in one go. I will miss my fuel allowance but it not right that people who don't need certain benefits still receive everything. People who really need it will get it.

And some people, a lot, who really need it won’t now get it.
Incoming governments always say that the last lot left the country in a mess and hard up.A complete fiction whichever side says it.

There is a video on X this morning of Keir Starmer 2 months ago complaining in Parliament about the fact that the Tories were thinking about taking the Winter Fuel Allowance away from pensioners to fill the black hole and how disgusting it was.

Tut tut! That sort of thing shouldn’t be allowed.

The country's not broke!!

deedeedum Mon 12-Aug-24 12:54:04

Scrapping the winter fuel allowance has upset a lot of people. However, if the country is "broke" so be it. Nevertheless, I wish they would make up their minds as to whether the old age pension is a benefit or a legitimate pension to which many of us have contributed to for many years.

undines - well said.
Legal UK citizens (of any race, colour, creed, etc.) deserve to be housed before anyone else.

Labours plans are not a quick fix but sadly sensible long term solutions don’t appeal to people. We also need to rebuild our damaged relationship with Europe so we can all work together to resolve the problem.

Beesh Mon 12-Aug-24 12:09:38

Unfortunately Keir’s initiative of stopping the criminal gangs doesn’t seem to have kicked in yet as 700 asylum seekers arrived yesterday. With the Bobby Stockholm being decommissioned and a number of hotels also giving up these contracts it is going to be even more difficult to find accommodation. Perhaps we should come up with something like Homes for Ukraine which was quite successful

knspol Mon 12-Aug-24 12:09:14

Another backwards step. People who have lived in the UK for many years deserve priority treatment above those who have just landed here often just to drain the benefits system.
I also think the idea of using up space in disused care homes is wrong, where is the joined up thinking surely these ex-care homes would be better utilised by the NHS to enable them to discharge those patients who no longer need medical care but do need looking after before they are able to return to their own homes.

MayBee70 Mon 12-Aug-24 12:03:44

Doesn’t make sense to get people into homes and into employment asap? Especially as the previous governments policy regarding visas means that we are desperately short of workers in many fields.

ReadyMeals Mon 12-Aug-24 12:01:43

I say speed up processing so that those whose asylum application is valid can get a job to contribute to our economy and get on with their lives. Having working age people festering in run-down hotels for years is just asking for them to turn to other activities, out of boredom if nothing else.

Despite what people may say about our 'democracy' and this government having been 'voted in' the truth is we do not have true democracy. This government was elected by about a third of the people, and I'm willing to bet about half of them only wanted the Tories out. Now they are acting as if they have a massive mandate to do exactly what they want and the signs are very alarming. The people of Britain who want more control of immigration have no voice at all. People are seeing their communities destroyed and their compatriots sleeping in shop doorways, while some often dubious characters are welcomed and given housing and benefits, no question. This resentment is behind the recent unrest. Please note I DO NOT CONDONE VIOLENCE, before anyone screams 'fascist' at me. But it's not fair to brand as fascist anyone who objects to uncontrolled immigration. The facts, as always, can be hard to determine. But anyone who supports uncontrolled immigration and expects communities to open up and welcome crowds of single males (and yes, we are often not talking families, not talking actual refugees) should be prepared to have a hostel opened up next door, and see how they feel about young men from cultures that may be more brutal, roaming about, not integrating, and causing unease (at the least) to their own daughters and sons, and bringing down the value of their property into the bargain.

A friend I see only rarely has been re-posting anti Labour items on FB to the extent that I am seriously thinking about unfollowing her. I can't decide if the demand of 'Nigel Farage for PM' is a joke or not!

Same here. And if you check out the people who originally post those things they often have videos of unsavoury people like Katie Hopkins and Tommy Robinson. I think it’s about time people were more careful when they repost things and need to question the motive behind the person they originate from. At the same time thankfully some Facebook pages I’m on have stated that anyone making racist comments will be removed immediately.

sazz1 Mon 12-Aug-24 12:00:24

Personally I don't think it's fair to give houses to new arrivals when we have so many sleeping on the streets, in vans, in tents etc. Mostly because of a shortage of social housing and private rents are unaffordable.
I'm sure many of the peace protestors have a spare empty bedroom but how many would offer a home to a refugee? And don't get me started on johnathon Ross who is v upset at immigrants being housed near his mansion and extensive grounds. NIMBY comes to mind and with many other Labour voters and peace protesters.

Sarnia Mon 12-Aug-24 11:58:45

I didn't vote for Labour. Despite their electioneering they were always going to do what they wanted as soon as they were in power. Rayner's latest idea is a classic example.

14 years of Tory nonsense and only a month since Labour were voted into power. Doesn’t quite seem fair to judge them yet and they’ve done a great job with the riots. Kier def seems more committed to the role of PM than most of his Tory predecessors.

Australia and Greece fly people to Rwanda?

Where are the traffickers who are rubbing their hands in glee? If we know that, thy can be arrested. They are the people the government wants to go after, so it would be good if people with this information can let the authorities know their whereabouts.

Dillonsgranma Mon 12-Aug-24 11:37:23

I despair of this labour government. Day one , they scrapped the Rwanda idea for illegal immigrants arriving by boat That’s come back to bite them in the bottom! The traffickers are rubbing their hands with glee and more and more boats are arriving . More than before!
It was a deterrent , just the same as Australia has used and Greece

cossy that is funny. I do wonder if the age group on here is really that of mature adults….

I promise my physical age is 65, my mental age… Who knows!

Cossy Mon 12-Aug-24 08:51:00

Damage limitation!

The govt has to raise funds somehow, we need to invest in our failing public services.

I am truly sorry that withdrawing the WFA will affect those who fall through the gap, maybe some of you may be entitled to pension credits but not claiming them?

I’d like to see better public services at all levels.

Oreo Sun 11-Aug-24 22:18:28

Siope

No world peace. No miracle green fuel. No cure all known diseases. Not even an extra bank holiday for no reason at all. Slackers.

No slacking unfortunately where cutting WFA was concerned.

Wyllow3 Sun 11-Aug-24 21:49:40

OK, its clear now.
