Tory leadership contest

Is anyone interested in this?

I was astounded to find this summary of an interview with Priti Patel on twitter this morning. She sounds like a tory leader I could almost get behind!

Posted by the political editor of The Times

Priti Patel interview:

* Warns that leaving ECHR would be divisive and impractical. ‘It is a divisive policy at a time when we need to unite’

*0 Says ‘perception’ of two-tier policing risks undermining confidence

* Nigel Farage will never be allowed to join Tory party under her leadership

* Says record migration figures were justified in ‘context’ of pandemic and helping people from Afghanistan, Ukraine and Hong Kong

* Rejects suggestion she is right wing. ‘I just don’t think labels like that are relevant or helpful right now. We cannot keep on tacking left or right. I think that’s part of the reason why we’ve been in the mess we’ve been in’

* Says she has ‘100%’ confidence that she will win the contest

Why should she choose words carefully ? You just illustrated my point. No more from me on this thread, it’s boring.

Casdon Mon 12-Aug-24 14:25:16

ronib

A government especially an authoritarian one is the first meaning Casdon

You say potato, I say potato ronib, and dictionaries have alternative meanings for words, not one right and one wrong option - choose your words carefully.

Siope Mon 12-Aug-24 14:22:11

I genuinely have no idea why you said it.

What freedoms have this government, in power for about six weeks, removed from us nanna8, please?

nanna8 Mon 12-Aug-24 14:19:21

You know why I said that, you live it. Why ask ? Freedoms are being removed, surely must see that? No point in arguing, just open your eyes. I really worry about what is happening there and I will never again visit, don’t worry. More and more like Hong Kong and what happened there. It makes me sick thinking of it.

A regime is a systematic and ordered way of doing things, so a good choice of word ronib, that’s exactly what the country needs right now after years of dysfunction. Sort of Joe Wicks for the nation.

Yes Joe Wicks!

People’s Republic does sound a bit over the top - I prefer The Regime…,,

Is it too much to hope for the courtesy of a reply?

nanna8

They need a good strong leader against the Peoples Republic of Britain.

Meaning what nanna8 ?
Would you care to expand on The People’s Republic of Britain ?

I’m waiting for the we, our 😉

nanna8- am I correct in saying that you do not live in this country? If so, why do you have such unpleasant and uncalled for thoughts about my country?
In another thread, you accused me of "Farage bashing " which I challenged you to prove, which, of course, you could not.
Whom are you "bashing " here ? And why?
Do you post about France? Or Norway? Or Greece? Or is it just the elected government of this foreign country which causes you to indulge in insults?

If I remember correctly nanna8 was born in the U.K. and emigrated to Australia as an adult.

Grantanow Sun 11-Aug-24 18:15:58

I think any new Tory leader should instigate a root and branch review of the Party, what it stands for and how it can set out a future for the UK acceptable to the majority of voters. If it continues as it has done there is no hope for it.

The Tory leadership also saw the membership as a real problem in their voting tendencies, which is one reason it was decided to only have one candidate last time- thus Sunak.

Siope Sun 11-Aug-24 13:19:44

It’s not an insult, or derogatory,. GG13 It’s a widely used term, defined by the Cambridge Dictionary as

a set (= a group of similar numbers, objects, or people) that is part of another, larger set

I have no wish to be offensive (I too have Tory party members in my family, and a sister who is a Tory part Special Advisor) and genuinely believed the term was as understood to have an entirely neutral meaning. .

Whitewavemark2 Sun 11-Aug-24 13:02:36

Not that it is likely this time around, but Farage has said numerable times that his eyes are set on the Tory party.

That is why I would like to see the Tory party take a deep breath, decide who they are then vote for an appropriate leader.

WWM2 They would vote for Farage like a shot, given the opportunity.

I'm a Tory voter and certainly disagree with this statement.

I agree twinnytwin unfortunately on GN there are some posters who cannot distinguish between Conservatives and Reformers, it’s just laziness…

No you are wrong.

Tory VOTERS would not vote for Farage, but there is plenty of evidence to suggest that the 100000 or so members would vote for him.

I’m talking about the Tory membership.

They do not really represent the average Tory voter, which imo is the main issue.

My family are Conservative Party Members, your sweeping generalisations are incorrect.

Accepted ronib; perhaps I should say ‘Tory leaning’.

I’m interested in which way Tory leaning GNetters think the party will / should move in the future, which will be largely determined by the new leader.
