It's a very tricky area, and having platforms like Twitter/X/Facebook complicates it, as they are international and laws vary across the world.

It was an old tweet Maddy, student activist days, in reaction to homophobia or what he saw as homophobia from a journalist, I just worry we are showing the seeds for even more problems if we start down the line of further controls.

Mind you, I doubt he would say that now, or hopefully even think it. But it goes to show how what you write on social media can come back to bite you years later.

I have heard that two Gransnetters have been banned but not three. Surely Gransnet would not act on one report only.
I have not reported, as I would rather challenge their views if I disagreed with them.

What Maddy says is hopefully what people will consider before putting it out on the internet.

As I say I like Wes Streeting, but it's the contrast that worries me. He will likely be PM (or that may be my wishful thinking) and the blokes from Sunderland will have a prison record. And yes I know his tweets were probably pre hate speech laws, but we are still saving up all sorts of problems here.

I do actually find the expression “do gooder” quite offensive!

Do you those of us who have compassion and empathy with asylum seekers?

I simply don’t agree with the fact that “do gooders” should be used as an insult, if one isn’t a “do gooder” are they a “do badder”

Those with compassion and empathy are normally pretty balanced, can see both sides of situations and have to tolerant being called all manner of things, meant in a derogatory manner.

For instance, “lefties” “loony left” “bleeding hearts” etc etc etc

Let’s just agree not to label people any longer here in GNs, we are all grown ups and should be able to debate without resorting to personal insults.

I agree too that some people are called “fascists” and “racist” sometimes unfairly.

Hate speech is already a crime. I’d classify this both as Hate Speech, and inciting violence.

Do I think prison is appropriate?

Probably not, do I want to see an end to freedom of speech, absolutely not, do I want those “owning” the rights to FB, X etc to be more responsible, absolutely.

Would I ever consider posting something of this nature? No!

This woman was inciting violence. The mob were disgusting, and wound up, but they have free will and know right from wrong.
I don't feel sorry for any of them, they all got what they deserved, her as well, she knew what she was doing.

I quite agree, she was trying to get others to do something illegal and that should not be allowed.

The only way others are going to know what we are and aren't allowed to do is by example, and this is a good one

Students say daft things. All the time . They are learning who they are, and how to express that. That, in many ways, is one of the points of being a student. I really don't like the idea that we should, as adults, have our student indiscretions held against us forever.

I'm not talking about sex offenders or murders here, but people who made unfortunate choices in what they said, sometimes in the heat of the moment, and may now regret them. The courts would be full to overflowing if we were all called to account for saying things we may now regret.

I agree, to call anyone out for the colour of their skin, their religious beliefs, their appearance etc are awful and I guess these people who are discriminated against unfairly grow thick skins pretty quickly. It’s the children I feel most sorry for in these situations.

Goodness yes! In my late teens and very early twenties I’m sure I spoke and thought some pretty dreadful and ignorant things, however, no one will ever have any evidence as we didn’t have social media.

I just think people need to think first, post later!

I’ve seen this morning that 28 people have now been jailed for social media offences, the ones I’ve seen reported are mainly aged 30+, and have incited riot with some expressed physical harm to migrants or police in their posts.

We certainly do NOT have a dictator as our PM!

I’m missing Germanshepherdsmum and hope she is not banned. I am obviously in a minority here and just now thinking hard about remaining. Maybe it should remain totally British and that’s ok by me because I don’t have inside knowledge, only impressions from overseas and relatives who may or may not be typical. Another one I miss is fanny- always intelligent, always able to see two sides to an argument.
