Keyboard warriors - will the jail sentences deter others?

I’ve been pondering the impact of so many people being jailed for posting incitement to riot on social media. A lot of those prosecuted have been seemingly ordinary people, whose views were probably not known to anybody else beforehand. This lady sentenced yesterday is one example.

Do you think these jail sentences will make other people think twice before posting offensive views, because they will realise the massive impact it can have on their lives and those around them?

The previous owner of X suppressed the hunter Biden laptop story, and kicked of anyone who said er men arent women, it was also at the time a platform for some deeply dangerous people in regard to children. No one said a word.

Exactly.

It's a very tricky area, and having platforms like Twitter/X/Facebook complicates it, as they are international and laws vary across the world.

It was an old tweet Maddy, student activist days, in reaction to homophobia or what he saw as homophobia from a journalist, I just worry we are showing the seeds for even more problems if we start down the line of further controls.

Thanks for explanation Galaxy. My son is gay but I don’t think anyone who is homophonic should be pushed under a train!

Mind you, I doubt he would say that now, or hopefully even think it. But it goes to show how what you write on social media can come back to bite you years later.

I don’t agree with the rioting and looting and hate speech however I would rather see this man in prison than a keyboard warrior.

I have heard that two Gransnetters have been banned but not three. Surely Gransnet would not act on one report only.
I have not reported, as I would rather challenge their views if I disagreed with them.

MissAdventure Thu 15-Aug-24 11:33:26

What Maddy says is hopefully what people will consider before putting it out on the internet.

So yes, hopefully a deterrent, because where will it end if we have no consequences?

Galaxy Thu 15-Aug-24 11:33:44

As I say I like Wes Streeting, but it's the contrast that worries me. He will likely be PM (or that may be my wishful thinking) and the blokes from Sunderland will have a prison record. And yes I know his tweets were probably pre hate speech laws, but we are still saving up all sorts of problems here.

I do actually find the expression “do gooder” quite offensive!

Do you those of us who have compassion and empathy with asylum seekers?

I simply don’t agree with the fact that “do gooders” should be used as an insult, if one isn’t a “do gooder” are they a “do badder”

Those with compassion and empathy are normally pretty balanced, can see both sides of situations and have to tolerant being called all manner of things, meant in a derogatory manner.

For instance, “lefties” “loony left” “bleeding hearts” etc etc etc

Let’s just agree not to label people any longer here in GNs, we are all grown ups and should be able to debate without resorting to personal insults.

I agree too that some people are called “fascists” and “racist” sometimes unfairly.

Glorianny has vanished, which I am a bit sad about, I am not implying she has been banned, I have just noticed her absence. We used to shout at each other a lot grin

Hate speech is already a crime. I’d classify this both as Hate Speech, and inciting violence.

Do I think prison is appropriate?

Probably not, do I want to see an end to freedom of speech, absolutely not, do I want those “owning” the rights to FB, X etc to be more responsible, absolutely.

Would I ever consider posting something of this nature? No!

It depends who’s on the receiving end of that hate speech, I am a redhead, I have heard people on SM, people in public, comedians say the most vile, repugnant remarks to, or about people with red hair- could I ring the police? Would I ring the police? To report- no I definitely would not. I know how p

Agreed, Cossy. And passive aggressive. And unhelpful if the 'Some Do Gooders' are unnamed, so we are left to work out who they are.

I agree and I think most of us would, however, without being pedantic, this thread isn’t about ghastly sex offenders.

Mt61 Thu 15-Aug-24 11:38:46

( accidentally sent to early) going to say, so I know people who get named called due to the colour of their skin, how they must feel, hurt!

This woman was inciting violence. The mob were disgusting, and wound up, but they have free will and know right from wrong.
I don't feel sorry for any of them, they all got what they deserved, her as well, she knew what she was doing.

I quite agree, she was trying to get others to do something illegal and that should not be allowed.

The only way others are going to know what we are and aren't allowed to do is by example, and this is a good one

Cossy Thu 15-Aug-24 11:42:43

I’m pretty much sure I’m a “do gooder”!

These damned “do gooders” with their balanced views, compassion and empathy!

If one dares to make positive comments about immigration, for example, suddenly we are “do gooders” who want unfettered, uncontrolled immigration! (Said no-one, ever!)

I am uncomfortable with dragging up things that were said in different times when the people saying them were different people.

Students say daft things. All the time grin. They are learning who they are, and how to express that. That, in many ways, is one of the points of being a student. I really don't like the idea that we should, as adults, have our student indiscretions held against us forever.

I'm not talking about sex offenders or murders here, but people who made unfortunate choices in what they said, sometimes in the heat of the moment, and may now regret them. The courts would be full to overflowing if we were all called to account for saying things we may now regret.

I agree, to call anyone out for the colour of their skin, their religious beliefs, their appearance etc are awful and I guess these people who are discriminated against unfairly grow thick skins pretty quickly. It’s the children I feel most sorry for in these situations.

Goodness yes! In my late teens and very early twenties I’m sure I spoke and thought some pretty dreadful and ignorant things, however, no one will ever have any evidence as we didn’t have social media.

I just think people need to think first, post later!

I was told several times to engage my brain first, then my mouth 😂😂

MissAdventure Thu 15-Aug-24 11:49:00

Saying it writing something isn't the same as inciting, I suppose.

I think you’ve summed up how I feel too Doodledog, thanks.

I’ve seen this morning that 28 people have now been jailed for social media offences, the ones I’ve seen reported are mainly aged 30+, and have incited riot with some expressed physical harm to migrants or police in their posts.

karmalady Thu 15-Aug-24 12:07:18

meanwhile career criminals are being let out

Resentment is still simmering below the surface and the uk will NOT be suppressed like people in dictatorial north korea, or china. We now have a dictator in place who is trying to rule by fear

Doodledog Thu 15-Aug-24 12:12:53

What leads you to think that KS is a dictator, karmalady, and how is he trying to rule by fear?

We certainly do NOT have a dictator as our PM!

I’m missing Germanshepherdsmum and hope she is not banned. I am obviously in a minority here and just now thinking hard about remaining. Maybe it should remain totally British and that’s ok by me because I don’t have inside knowledge, only impressions from overseas and relatives who may or may not be typical. Another one I miss is fanny- always intelligent, always able to see two sides to an argument.
