Angela Rayner dancing whilst on holiday in Ibiza

Have to say this sounds like a non news story but it seems some are getting hot under the collar about it. Personally I don't think there is anything wrong with a young woman like Angela enjoying a holiday in Ibiza and dancing in a nightclub. She wasn't doing anything wrong.
I like the fact that Angela is from a working class background in the North, the same as me, it makes her far more in touch with those who feel that politicians recently are on another planet. She also has fire in her belly and God forbid a love of life. Reminds me of a young Barbara Castle.
Keep on dancing Ang, but keep your smartest moves for those opposite you in the HoC.

Oh no!!
I'd hate my boy seeing Rayner as a role model.
Banish the thought!!!

He might end up as a... a... a... oh I can hardly bear to say it!!!
A d..d..deputy prime minister.

The shame of it all.

Cossy I saw the video of AR and I think it may well encourage young people to drink too much when clubbing. I don’t think Boris Johnson would have quite the same appeal to young people.
There is a definite problem of alcohol addiction and youth. AR is seen to endorse it.

HPQ to be fair I think in retrospect that AR is a role model for young people and I do worry about drinking to excess. AR seems to have the attitude of an unreasonable teenager in this instance.
I don’t buy all this 14 years stuff - Oliver Dowden was a very quiet, intelligent and hardworking deputy prime minister from a working class home and a good state school. If the country went down the pan with Dowden in government, I hate to think where we will be in 5 years time.

You are kidding?

Half of this country’s young people take zero interest in politics, and those who do are far too intelligent to see AR as a role model!

For goodness sake, did young people see Johnson as a role model? He was jolly and affable and had “character”

I don't think AR can win, whatever she does she will be derided by the media and seemingly lots on this forum too. However, for now she's staying true to her roots and herself, she likes to dance, so she goes to a club and dances. She likes a drink, so she has a drink. She has a very disadvantaged background with little formal education and she makes no secret about it but anyone who has listened to her being interviewed on This is politics podcast will know, she doesn't blame anyone either for her childhood, which I really admire about her. I'm content to listen and watch before I make any judgements about her, pity others aren't willing to do the same but that's politics for you!

It is indeed.

With poor Ms Rayner it will always be damned if she does, cursed if she doesn’t

Quite frankly I have more to worry about than what she wears, where she holidays and what she drinks!!

Honestly not so long ago posters were calling Starmer boring!

Well AR is far from boring, but that’s wrong too.

🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️

I haven’t read through the thread but just want to say - enjoying herself? Dancing? On holiday? How very dare she! gringrin
Unlike the sight of Michael Gove throwing his moves on the dance floor- that was truly cringeworthy!

She’s on holiday. She’s having a few drinks and dancing. We’ve all done that surely? Load of fuss over nothing.

MissAdventure Mon 02-Sept-24 18:29:36

It was proved that she didn't sublet her home, wasnt it?
The rest isn't even worth responding to, particularly because a lot of grans on here refer to their sons or daughters "darling partners".

Seems Ange is just the same as everyone else in that respect.

eazybee Mon 02-Sept-24 18:24:57

I would hate to think AR is a role model for young women but I rather fear she may be.
Ignore school, go clubbing in search of men, get pregnant, get your own flat, then have more babies (because you get more points that way ) but don't marry your partner; sublet your council home and if they find out, move in with your partner elsewhere and they will have to rehouse you.
All true, two women, same age as AR, who have done exactly this and now reside in spanking new social housing in a good area without even having to pretend they are working. All posted on Facebook, shown to me by their rather resentful contemporaries.
And to repeat, AR is held in place by the unions. Look at some of the new Labour MPs and see how much money they have received from Union donations: Liam Conlon, already a PPS.

To be fair, we have been in a strange limbo land since the GE, due to the unusual timing so close to the end of the parliamentary term. It has been a government of interview and soundbites. This strange situation had been exacerbated by a current opposition in the process of sorting out it's new leader.

ronib Mon 02-Sept-24 18:12:13

HPQ the fairest approach is to judge by results?
I don’t like the abrasive style adopted by the new government - Reeves, Rayner and Starmer are all very new to the job and I hope they begin to feel more comfortable very soon.

I don't think "young people" see politicians as role models though. I don't know a great deal about Dowden, but do think that the rot started with Cameron and Osbourne and austerity. The underfunding from that period has never been made up. I am not a huge fan of AR, but I can recognise that she has succeeded where many fail; she could easily have ended up as yet another single parent on benefits, the kind of person who is oft criticised on GN (flat screen tv, latest mobile, tattoos etc), so surely, irrespective of our politics we should applaud her as an example of what can be achieved

Just a bit more normal than losing your security detail while partying with Russian spies.

Indeed.

Reminds me of that old song, Angela versus Boris. Anything you can do…

The problem is, the country is in the sh*t, and sink8ng deeper and the so called deputy pm, who also holds at least one other position, is off dancing her heart out when she should be, sorting out the country

Parliament returns this week. AR was on holiday during recess

she's a granny ?? !
wow !
let's invite her to join GN at once.
although not yet 50, she gets in on 100% granny-ness.
or perhaps she's already here amongst us.
i wonder what her username might be . . .

You serious MissAdventure ? Not very sure what to say …. 1.5 million new homes are urgently needed. AR is tasked to see their supply. Or is she?

14 years of Tory government and under investment is what is facing the country, and I don't think that AR taking a week's holiday while the HoC is in recess will make a huge difference do you, honestly?

Whatever happened to decorum? Or is that a non-u word?

How old fashioned. Decorum is boring, especially when you are on holiday.
