Riot trials; unbelievable!

Just heard that the 12 year old who was arrested for being involved in the August riots was in court for sentencing today. He was actively involved in two of the major incidents, which is bad enough, but...today..the judge had to defer sentence because the child's Mother had just gone on holiday to Ibiza!

Poor kid has probably never had any boundaries. How can a kid of that age be charged ? Makes no sense to me. Why not some form of rehabilitation ? Those police and court officials are a bunch of heartless savages.

His Mum will most probably have to go on a parenting course.

Harsh and unfair comment. If I remember rightly, you expressed disgust at the riots and the rioters, like most of us. So, why when the law, which is there to protect all of us, are you so angry? It is not the fault of the Police that a 12 year old child is out at night, endangering himself and others, nor of the judiciary.

nanna8, the court can give rehabilitative orders as in community service and training orders.

DrWatson do you know this woman and her circumstances?

I haven't seen anything about her yet?
And only speculation re the child's father.

How rude you are!

As some have suggested, it's not that difficult to have children, almost any idiot can do it, and unfortunately quite a few succeed.

I'm not sure of an ideal way to correct matters (re 12-y-old and trollop mother) , but in MY country, those guilty of anti-social behaviour (that would include most crimes) would be sanctioned and lose State Benefits for a period of time as decreed to match the offence. In the case of this junior, the sanction would apply to the parents.

Why SHOULD the rest of us support scum?

Ghastly language....."trollop" "scum" ...

Agreed HPQ. Writing off human beings like that.

We've been discussing, "how can it change for this 12 year old", and how will having no food or home help in anyway?

HousePlantQueen Wed 04-Sept-24 10:50:45

Talking of breaking the cycle of neglectful childhood leading to poor parenting choices, I read that one of the latest rioters to be jailed is 33 and a grandfather.

I feel sorry for the child. It reflects very badly on his mum, and the Judge will take a very dim view of it. It doesn't bode well with the boy's future.

From a slightly different perspective, perhaps the mum has had a similarly neglectful childhood.

I think this is often a big part of the problem; people who have been dragged up themselves or spent their childhood being tossed between biological parent and Foster parents going on to have children (often at a very young age) and repeating the pattern because that's all they know, and on it goes through the generations. Breaking the cycle needs proper government intervention adequately funded.

There are some fathers who contribute little other than the necessity for a babe to be conceived.
Most dads are not in that category.

I’d worry that stopping benefits would affect children and lead to crime. Removing passports and/or driving licences could be an effective punishment for some offences

Being from a deprived background does necessarily mean you will turn out bad. Neither does going to Eton and Oxbridge mean that you will be an honest, caring citizen.

I can't even afford one night in the nearest club to me let alone a week in Ibiza... what's the next level below deprived?

Apples don’t fall far from trees!!

Alternatively you could say that this 12 year old "apple" hasn't been cared for or nurtured.

I didn't understand that post. How can drowned people be repatriated? If the poster didn't mean that, how could people be deported before they got here? And how would the gangs be affected - presumably they get paid when the migrants leave their country of origin?

Sadly another at least 12 boat immigrants have died today in the chanel. If they were deported immediately this would hopefully stop or at least cut down on those making the crossing. And hopefully bankrupt the wicked evil criminal gangs.

What does this have to do with a child without adequate parental supervision?

Anemonemenome Tue 03-Sept-24 21:09:38

Where is his dad and the rest of his family?

Mojack26 Tue 03-Sept-24 20:51:33

Who/where is the daddy? Says it all. The kid has no chance!

Stephania1954 Tue 03-Sept-24 20:37:19

Was this boy going on holiday with his mother or was she leaving him with the uncle or maybe to fend for himself

Care could be made less damaging if it was owned by the local authorities with statutory responsibilities. Increasingly political interference and policies led to private foster agencies and residential care, whose purpose is to maximise profit. Care of the most vulnerable children shouldn’t be for profit.
Over the last ten years the numbers of children in care/looked after had grown enormously. No surprise that happened alongside closure of family centres. Cuts left la’s struggling to meet statutory duties so preventive support work went. So did mental health, substance misuse teams. Housing depts no longer worked in partnership with sw teams trying to prevent homeless families
Tony Blair’s Every Child Matters initiative feels like a golden age in contrast with the issues facing the new government

Sadly there will always be foster children who are hard to place and it is usually only these children who are placed through private fostering agencies. This may be due to particular needs or to the fact that there are siblings involved.
