I have just had a quick google on TT’s stance on the ECHR.

He is concerned that on multiple occasions when the UK has tried to deport foreign criminals (including murderers and rapists) that the Government of the day has been prevented by human rights lawyers using the ECHR.

Surely we have enough of our home grown criminals without being forced to let foreign criminals remain here?

Seems strange to me that Germany can, and does go ahead with deporting foreign criminals and failed asylum seekers, and back to Afghanistan, 28 in the last few days.
Their law states any foreigner committing crimes will be, not may be, deported after their sentence has been served, if convicted, their right to stay or residence permit is rescinded.
Instead, Labour will let foreign crimmies loose, to walk our streets, possibly commit further outrages.
Obviously no left wing lawyers stopping German crims being sent back from whence they came.

Which surely shows that it's not the ECHR which is preventing deportation.

Nobody knows what the future holds. The ECHR gives all of us a level of protection from our own government.

If you look at UK cases involving the ECHR, it's quite clear that the UK also deports people despite ECHR involvement.

I do not disagree with you growstuff

I just feel that out of the five remaining motley candidates TT is the least worst.

They all have political baggage to some degree.

growstuff Fri 06-Sept-24 09:28:59

I agree with you about TT as the "least worst".

I'd actually love Badenoch to be leader because it would guarantee that the Conservatives wouldn't be able to form a government for years. I think you know my opinion of my MP. hmm

I totally understand your reasoning, but hell no!

Conservatives have been the architects of their own demise

I hope that they can regroup and form a credible opposition, and regain the respect that has been lost.

A strong and upstanding opposition is needed to hold the Government of the day to account.

Everyone slates Johnson for his bad leadership but not one of them have had to put up with what he had when he was made PM. Brexit, Covid, opened gates for immigration and things have got much worse since he was booted out.

I honestly cannot pick a leader for the Conservative party but I do think the Wombles of Wimbledon would do a darned better job than all of them put together.

mabon1 Fri 06-Sept-24 11:46:48

I couldn't give a damn, the whole bunch of parliamentarians are in it for their own good. i.e. Rachel Reeves cutting the pensioners heating allowance bemoaning the fact that she struggles to live on her salary, but keeping the heating allowance for MPs second homes. Says it all.

cc Fri 06-Sept-24 12:15:25

It's a shame that some of those who were beaten in the last leadership race did not stand again, it was a stronger field.

Applegran Fri 06-Sept-24 12:20:51

The Tory party lost their chance to have Rory Stewart as its leader and no one on the current list has his intelligence, capacity for clear analysis and being, open to listening.

Zannygranny Fri 06-Sept-24 12:35:43

I don't think any of them will do much to improve the Tory party, I am pinning my hopes on the Reform Party for the future.

Wyllow3 Fri 06-Sept-24 13:02:28

I don't know why broadly speaking MP's are criticised for 'having second homes" when it's necessary to live in your own constituency as well as London. Including a family life when they have dependants.

However I do think its a good idea to revise limiting heating expenses in the current climate.

Siope Fri 06-Sept-24 13:20:19

Second home allowances for MPs should, however, be restricted to those who live more than an hour’s commute from Westminster, and should be restricted to the cost of a one- bedroomed flat. Better yet, there should be state-owned accommodation in which MPs can stay when they need to be in London overnight. They should live in their constituencies, and should, like the rest of us, meet the costs of running and maintaining their home out of their salaries.

Wyllow3 Fri 06-Sept-24 13:47:23

Yes, I've long thought there should be state owned flats for MP's in central London, however for MP's with children how to accommodate a family life? They may sometimes need to see mums (or dads) in the week or weekends when critical events mean staying longer in London?

NotSpaghetti Fri 06-Sept-24 14:03:40

I suppose, Wyllow3, lots of parents commute weekly. Travelling to London on Monday morning and back on Friday night.

My daughter shared a flat with onr such commuter (from Leeds or Sheffield) for years. He moved back to his family full time after the pandemic.

Wyllow3 Fri 06-Sept-24 14:40:14

I did find some limited allowances for MP's who are sole carers

Why? What do you think Nigel Farage can do for you? Nigel looks after Nigel and he's an agent of chaos, bankrolled very dubiously. Even his party is a limited liability company.

RIP One Nation Conservatives. Very sad.

Not in parliament, it’s pretty much the same split as it was pre-election.

Sorry, I meant right. Bloody hell!

Wyllow3 Fri 06-Sept-24 15:16:56

I think they will take some time to develop clear policies. In Casdon's reference they seem have lost the "need for levelling up" MP's (as in the North of England).

Are the MP's and party members going to choose on the basis of "Being right wing to avoid losses to Reform" or someone who has clear thinking on the needs of those most deprived, the NHS, etc.

But with loss after a long time in power, dont parties often take time to re-group.

Wyllow3 Fri 06-Sept-24 15:22:32

I wanted to find out more about Mel Stride, as he's a relative unknown, and found this Guardian article.
www.theguardian.com/politics/article/2024/aug/04/i-worry-about-populist-politics-mel-stride-says-even-progressive-voters-should-want-a-strong-tory-party

quite a lot to like in terms of being centrist, and intelligent points about populism.

MayBee70 Fri 06-Sept-24 15:49:57

I like the sound of him; have done for a while. But I bet he will be the next elimination sad

Mazy Fri 06-Sept-24 16:02:53

When will they work it out that they are irrelevant

missdeke Fri 06-Sept-24 16:22:37

God help us if Cleverley wins the race. If he performs as a leader the same way as he has as our local MP we are doomed.

Oreo Fri 06-Sept-24 19:26:17

Until the Conservatives have chosen a new leader and got their act together in the next five years they won’t win at the next GE as Reform will only get stronger.

Having them all under one roof is an open invitation to any would be terrorist. Brighton bombing comes to mind.
Otherwise as you say living within one hour of work should not entitle them to a second home, and certainly not any WFA, for any of their homes. Reeves should hang her head in shame that she has allowed it to continue. Late finishes, rent a hotel room.
