I dont understand constant references to far right, instead of just right.
Was Thatcher right or far right?
Was Churchill?
I read somewhere that no one wants uncontrolled immigration.
The far right is a description of someone who goes along with populist views that denigrate or promote racism towards certain groups of people suggesting inhumane ways of dealing with immigration.
I don’t think that Thatcher or Churchill paid much attention to populism they may not be everyone’s cup of tea but they would certainly never have shared an ideology with the likes of Trump or Le Pen.
And of course nobody wants uncontrolled immigration but this isn’t the problem. The problem is clearing a back log of those seeking asylum, deporting those without a case and allowing those with a case to live here. It is also about improving relations with EU countries so that AS can be processed in Europe then allayed a legal route into the UK, as is presently the case with Ukrainian refugees.
In other words is government incompetence not the fault of those seeking refuge here.
What on earth were they expecting in 6 weeks given what they inherited M61?
Sadly agree, HPQ as in
"Completely agree. Where are the 'decent' Tories that my parents voted for? Thrown out by Johnson. For there to be effective government there has to be good, strong opposition, not for the sake of it, but to discuss and debate alternatives"
Of the ones on the list, I'd like to know more about Mel Barnes but of ones likely to be elected its a preference for Cleverley as being more centrist.

Have never supported the Tories but there has to be a strong opposition in a democracy, however, any of the above contenders does not inspire me, where are the centre right Tories who should guide the party back to its centre right moorings, at least back in the day there were real statesmen and women who behaved like grown ups. I think the Tories will be a long time in the wilderness,
Just never know, my friends who voted labour are already fed up with them & it’s only been six weeks
They are fed up with Labour?
If that is so, why?

Jenrick and Badenoch are too far right, watching the politics show one of the key things that made people feel the Tories had lost the plot was a lack of relatability inasmuch as with the cost of living crisis they just didn’t get it.
I doubt that these far right contenders who seem to only be concerned with boats of AS rather than anything else that voters worry about will go very far. We shouldn’t lose sight of the fact that it was the foaming at the mouth far right attack dogs that failed to win over the electorate, we are all tired of the same old same old.
Time for the party to remember the likes of Major, Hague, and Heseltine, not all PMs or leaders of the opposition but centre right statesmen who talked common sense rather than giving in to the populist view.

Completely agree. Where are the 'decent' Tories that my parents voted for? Thrown out by Johnson. For there to be effective government there has to be good, strong opposition, not for the sake of it, but to discuss and debate alternatives. This group of candidates are all from the abrasive side of the party, and in my opinion, none of them will contribute anything to intelligent debate or governance.
I think the Tories will be a long time in the wilderness
I'd have said the same 8 weeks ago.
Not too sure about that now.
As for leaders, I think Jendrick will win. I'm rooting for Kemi though
I used to be a Conservative voter but I am not enthused by any of those on the list above. I don't believe they will be a strong opposition to Labour and it is what we need.

We need a healthy opposition party in a democracy and predictions of "we're doomed" imo come from those not interested in the important discussion of how to get one, who is most likely to provide it, the alternative policies etc. Just turns off more and more voters as in "no point in being involved".

*In a nation of nearly 70 million people why are the Tories stuck with this shower*
And you wonder why a sizeable sub section of the population voted for a right wing party? (14.3%).
This appears to be a rising trend throughut Europe. Look at the recent German elections. Probably because they see no one who represents their views or concernes in the "two cheeks of the same ass" that are Con and Lab. The two main parties are scared of dealing with (or even discussing) mass immigration.
Seems to me governments have been discussing mass immigration to the detriment of everything else that needs to be fixed in this country.
Only recently Starmer was in talks with the German Chancellor and was in talks even before the election with Macron regarding how to deal with immigration as a whole, fact is the Tories pee’ed any chance of dealing with immigration effectively up the wall because of Brexit and a break down in relations with EU countries.
Just how much do you want our government to discuss this in order you ti consider they are not running scared.
Complete misinformation.

Where is someone who will put this country and its people before anyone else.
As Private Fraser once said, "we're doomed!".
What a pessimist!
No, we're not doomed.

What's your definition of mass immigration?
And you wonder why a sizeable sub section of the population voted for a right wing party? (14.3%)
Nope. I have a pretty fair idea of why some people voted for a far right party.

"Dealing with it" how? What policies do you recommend?
I'm interested in a more centrist candidate not one who moves right towards Reform to provide a solid oppostition.
But I haven't a clue about what actual Conservative Party members think?
Mel Stride seems quite centrist but is relatively unknown
www.theguardian.com/politics/article/2024/aug/04/i-worry-about-populist-politics-mel-stride-says-even-progressive-voters-should-want-a-strong-tory-party
but out of the lot on the list Cleverley is the one described as "centrist".
I won't quite ever forgive Jenrick when he was a minster for ordering the murals on the walls of a children's asylum seeker centre to be painted over!
For a second I read that GrannyGravy13 was part of the list! TBH I think she would make a better job of it than those listed below.

Impressed to see Cleverley and Badenoch pressing for more deregulation one day before the Grenfell enquiry condemned deregulation.
They are a mediocre, and thus potentially dangerous, bunch. Also I think it says something damning about the medium to long-term damage that Johnson’s purge of able and intelligent MPs did to the party, and, because our system needs a competent opposition, to parliamentary democracy.
It's a pity Johnson got rid of the moderates in his government/party. Ken Clarke and Rory Stewart spoke sense.

Here's a list of the 5 remaining with some descriptions of policies

Thanks for that.
I dont seem to mind any of them much, but dont really know them.
Rory Stewart might have been a better option.
Too late.

Thank the lord Patel is out!
But she’s not a Lord.
Rather, she’s a Dame.
