SKY and ITV are both reporting that Germany is looking into sending asylum seekers to Rwanda.

Apparently the facilities are ready and waiting 🤐

I'm all for working together when possible.

Westminster doesn't work well, for a number of reasons set out, for example, in recent books by Rory Stewart, Ian Dunt, SamFreedman and Chris Bryant, to name but a few. But I don't think it should be judged solely on the performative aspects of Parliament, such as PMQs.

It is worth looking at the work of the Select Committees, which have cross party membership and chairmanship. Their reports do present a consensus and show parliamentarians working together. Of course, their reports may well be ignored by government, but at least they demonstrate collaboration and objectivity rather than 'party lines'.

Make no mistake, Johnson, Sunak and the Tories were useless. But compared to Starmer, they look like geniuses.

FriedGreenToms2 - I was thinking that maybe Sunak and Hunt could be special advisors to the new government. I have felt for a very long time that the current parliamentary system is not working. We need collaboration not hostility. This country faces particular problems and it’s not coming up with solutions. The political parties need to work together.

(sorry Jane I hadn't seen your post so duplicating information on German ideas)

Contract for Bibby Stockholm runs out in Jan 2025 and will not be renewed.

No free mobiles unless it provided by a charity:
If meals are provided then asylum seekers get £8.86 a week

Sky news provided details of what some in Germany are considering (this includes Parsley post from above)
news.sky.com/story/germany-considers-sending-migrants-to-rwanda-after-uk-ditches-same-idea-13210359

But its speculation based on an X post.

In your opinion, I beg to differ!

^facilities are ready and waiting^ I daresay that's all down to the hundreds of millions of pounds given to Rwanda by the British taxpayer. I think the grand total of 1 migrant, who wanted to go there anyway, was sent to Rwanda. A catastrophic waste of money.

Along with £3,000! Shocking waste of money, good luck to the other countries!

Jane112 Fri 06-Sept-24 10:41:19

More Daily Mail and Telegraph hype, Germany is not doing what the UK planned to do, they are looking at processing asylum seekers in third countries under international humanitarian law and with UN backing, not shipping people to Rwanda for life whether or not they have a valid asylum claim. There is a big difference.

I suspect Germany’s asylum management arrangements generally are much better than they are in the UK. Shared intelligence across the EU, better detection and application processing arrangements, quicker decision making, etc. etc. , but those are all issues that the UK can remedy.

As I said on another thread, it's just a suggestion from the immigration minister,
"Joachim Stamp accused Russia and Belarus of encouraging migration to the EU as part of their "hybrid warfare." These migrants should be sent to a third country such as Rwanda, he suggested."
www.dw.com/en/germany-migration-commissioner-proposes-rwanda-deportations/a-70138163

To do this Germany would face similar challenges to the UK as their existing deportation laws would not allow this.

Think you'll find Germany are a lot stronger than us at getting people deported.

The houses that were built have been sold to native Rwandans. And they are at war with a neighbouring country (Congo?)
They still have problems from the civil war and massacre.
Who thought Rwanda would be a safe place?

Is anywhere a "safe" place anymore. Even London with the ever increasing crime rate, stabbings, shootings etc etc,I wouldn't call a safe place.

JaneJudge Fri 06-Sept-24 10:22:48

'wound down'

JaneJudge Fri 06-Sept-24 10:22:32

They are housed in accommodation that belongs to the home office. There is some information here regarding the sites. One includes the barge which is being und down and will cease in January 2025

Calendargirl Fri 06-Sept-24 10:11:50

I thought the barge accommodation had been ‘dropped’ also, if it’s the Bibby Stockholm.

Tiley Fri 06-Sept-24 10:00:16

Where are the asylum seekers being held now?

RAF Scampton, which was going to be used to accommodate (ever changing) numbers has now been ‘dropped’.

Are they still using hotels?

A lot are housed on a barge on Portland. They are given a mobile phone, English lessons clothing, toiletries, 3 meals a day. They have a gym on board. Top of the range coaches with blacked out windows take them on cultural tours plus an hourly service into Weymouth Town all for free plus they get spending money each week.

Parsley3 Fri 06-Sept-24 09:57:10

This from Miguel Berger the German Ambassador posted on X. I would do the link needed.

Let’s be clear, there is no plan of the German Government to deport asylum seekers to Rwanda. The discussion is about processing asylum applications in third countries under international humanitarian law and with support of the United Nations.

Who to believe?

Yes, Germany has its own pressures these days. Rwanda seemed like the easy way out and this smells of desperation. Sky and ITV though? Another media storm I'm ignoring- although I'm not, because I'm here...!

It’s not just those two media outlets, it is over most of them and Newspapers

Joachim Stamp, Germany’s migration minister has briefed on this possibility.

The recent stabbing to death of three people at a festival by an asylum seeker may have some bearing on this decision.

Along with the rise of the right AfD in local elections in the East of the Country.

Well, I can see the attraction for Germany if the previous UK govt has already paid for it....
