I bet the Police and many victims of crime are seething today as hundreds of prisoners are released.
One young man Djaber Benallaoua announced he was “gonna get lit” to you and me that means to get high.
He was incarcerated for drug dealing.
This is a quick fix scheme that will have dire consequences further down the line.
I bet it’s only a matter of weeks before we are reading about the dreadful crimes committed by these men and women.

So they are letting people who have committed a crime out because the prisons aren’t safe? I’m sorry but why should we not be safe from people who are criminals?
Can we see some cuts in government personnel, public pensions, subsidised food and drink, expenses etc etc and this money used to keep criminals locked up.
Buttonjugs
The reason he was forced to do this is because so many people were disenfranchised under the Tories that ultimately they committed crime. Look at how those prisoners ended up in jail and you will see mental health issues and addiction caused by those issues. I hope there are suitable exit strategies in place because support is vital to prevent recidivism. I believe Keir is looking at the big picture, I don’t agree with everything but Labour are definitely putting plans in action and dragging us out of the mire the Tories left us in. I think that most people who disagree with their policies perhaps weren’t affected by the Tories. If you bought a house in the 1970s, were privileged enough to have a good steady job and are so secure that the only things you have to worry about are the winter fuel allowance and people being released from jail, then you have had a much more fortunate life than the generations after you.
I so agree Buttonjugs, Labour have always championed a community rehabilitation of offenders approach and they won't be able to have got this up and running already. Prison doesn't work for many anyway so the current lack of support won't help stop reoffending, it'll take time to rebuild these services.
Starmer made a brilliant move when he appointed James Timson to the House of Lords as prison minister, he's a man with real practical experience of working with offenders and his influence will help shape a great future policy.
I did a 'bak to work' course over 40 yrs ago when my life was a muddle not through offending, and that was a great help at setting me up in a future career, this is the sort of thing needed for offenders but the Tories spent so long cutting staff the services just aren't there anymore and need to be rebuilt.

This Labour government has put a new definition on blinkered policy making. The consequences will be much greater than the original problems and they won't be able to claim they inherited them from the Tories.
Oh yes they will. But many of their problems will disappear as the pensioners disappear as a result of their early actions.
And what of the pensioners who have posted here to say they do not need the fuel allowance?
Some donate it, or give it to family members who need it more?

They should have told the government they didn’t need it. I haven’t heard that anyone did that.
I doubt anyone would say they didnt need it.
Just as I doubt anyone has said "no thanks, I'll pay for my prescription".
Besides which, where would that money end up?
It’s just labour who’re doing this the SNP are doing it in Scotland. In 2020 it was announced a new prison would be built in Glasgow to replace HMP Barlinnie and in jul 2022 they that it would be ready by 2026, we’re into almost the last quarter of 2024 and very little progress has been made. This was predictable years ago that we were reaching extreme levels of overcrowding in our prisons but neither the UK or Scottish governments made any plans on how to avoid, it’s been the usual tosh that lessons have learned well clearly they haven’t and it’s the general public who’ll be left to deal with consequences.
Sorry my post should say it’s NOT just Labour
Let’s hope when they get lit it finishes them off, they are just a drain on honest people. There's no deterrent for these low life. How many illegals are here, no one knows. They could be hardened criminals.
Why have they not built more prisons? I'm not sure I understand why. Of course money will be cited but prisons are obviously needed.
This problem has been going on for decades . Prisons have been closed, demolished even but not replaced.
It will be interesting to see if the new government manages to build any
I've just read that one prisoner was released and seconds later re-arrested!

Yes it was shown on the BBC1 10pm news last night, as he exited the prison door the police were waiting for him.
He was handcuffed and driven off in the back of a police car PDQ.
Labour has totally got it wrong, releasing prisoners early who have committed murder is wrong.
Desdemona.
What about all the horrible things that happened before labour got in.
Short memories I think.

I doubt there were many who anticipated what change was going to mean.
Never was a truer word spoken Smileless.

Saying one government is wrong does not, mean everything that happened before was right.
Saying that the previous government didn’t get things right, doesn’t mean that everything this one does, is or will be right.
I sometimes get the feeling that we’re expected to wait until this government is voted out before we can criticise them.
But when I criticise the previous Labour government I get hassle for having too long a memory.
Ah well . . .
No past Governments have been perfect, this cohort will not be perfect nor future Governments.
We are fortunate in the UK that we have (at the moment) the freedom to condemn, criticise and give praise when we feel appropriate.
Being tribal to your colour is rather blinkered.
I think there should be 2 types of prison. The first should be for non-violent crimes such as fraud and shoplifting. These people should serve sentences with the chance to study or work whilst locked up. The second should be for violent offenders who should never be released. There is no comparison between the two types of crime. Nobody serving time for fraud should be locked up with murderers. The mindset is completely different.
Sago Think you are right and the blighters will be laughing at the same time.
I’ll never vote Labour again. Oops ! Should I have said that? Maybe I’ll be arrested.
Tictacnana, I did read plenty if warnings of what Labour were likely to do if they got into power! We were warned!
I just don’t get it, the government want to ease pressure on the prisons, but aren’t they filling them back up with rioters & people who have said a few hurried words on SM, without thinking?
These prisoners are more than likely going to reoffend & be sent straight back to prison, causing even more pressure- crackers

I agree with that but I think child murderers should be hanged

And the previous strike of 1974 under Edward Heath? He was Conservative, in case you've forgotten that, too.
In what sense do you think the country is 'on its knees' now? And what does that even mean in this context?
