Another one of those days when you remember exactly where you were. ๐Ÿฅ€

We arrived home from holiday the night before.

I sent the school age children off to school, and started on the enormous pile of holiday laundry.

I was matching up socks in the kitchen and put the TV on, I can still remember the horror I felt, and the awful images of people jumping out of the windows.

We had only eaten in the restaurant at the top of one of the towers a few years previous.

One of the most heinous acts in my lifetime.

It's so ingrained in my mind, I was with my mother, my father had recently died. I wandered into a shop it was playing out on the news. I initially thought it was a light aircraft that's what the first reports suggested. When the full magnitude unfolded I, like everyone, just horrified. 23 years ago, my children were still at school, they couldn't believe it either.

Somebody my DH worked with lost her son. He was in his late twenties, her only child.

I well remember retuning from morning only work, to be met at the door by a white-faced (early 20s) dd. Dh had left for SE Asia for work, so I immediately thought sheโ€™d learned of a plane crash on the news.

The TV was on - IIRC it was just before the 2nd plane hit.
Unimaginable horror.
But dhโ€™s old aunt phoned anyway, to complain that Countdown wasnโ€™t on.
I said, โ€˜But havenโ€™t you seen the dreadful thing thatโ€™s happened in New York?โ€™

โ€˜I donโ€™t care about that! I want Countdown!โ€™ ๐Ÿ˜ฉ

crazyH Wed 11-Sept-24 10:39:32

Yes, letโ€™s remember those poor folks who died and those brave men and women who were running up the flights of stairs to help those who were trapped above, only to come down with the towers, when they collapsed. Letโ€™s remember the bereaved families - letโ€™s remember them all ๐Ÿ˜ข

I was due to fly to New York the next day to spend a few days with some friends before flying on to Toronto to stay with my best friend.

I was actually on the phone to one of my friends in NYC finalising arrangements when the first plane struck- his office was about 10 blocks from the World Trade Centre. He just shouted "gotta go" and the phone went dead.

I did get to Toronto on the Saturday but skipped NYC - obviously. It was a scary few days and I eventually heard from my New York friends on the Monday. Their stories of how they got out of downtown Manhattan and the aftermath will stay with me forever. sad

I was with a friend in her garden admiring some of her plants when her neighbour came out, seemingly in a daze, and over the fence mentioned a plane crash.

When I got home, I switched on the TV to find the full horror.

The world changed on that day. Let's remember all who died on that day, or who were involved in the rescue services. flowers

Remembering the poor souls.๐Ÿ’
Such a horrendous event.

My friend's daughter has gone to the Twin Towers just the day before and left to come back to Scotland the same day. We were sick thinking about how close tragedy had come to our wee group. I couldn't watch the footage as it was so upsetting. All those people jumping to certain death and then when the towers collapsed... It was horrific

Wyllow3 Wed 11-Sept-24 11:15:34

I walked into the gym unaware and found a huge crowd round the TV, silent, transfixed. Hard to believe it wasn't a film then reality hit.

The cruelty of mankind knew no bounds that dreadful day.

Kate1949 Wed 11-Sept-24 11:33:39

A lady who sat next to me at work was in a dreadful state as her daughter was working in NY very close to the towers. She couldn't get back to where she was staying. A co-worker took her home with her. My friends DD had to have counselling.
When we visited NY a few years later we went to the site. It was very moving in the little church there which had been used for the rescue workers to rest and eat before going back into what they described as 'the pit'.

Athrawes Wed 11-Sept-24 11:34:42

I couldn't believe it! I was sitting at my office desk and someone told me to switch on the news - and there it was. Absolutely horrific. We were all transfixed and found it hard to believe but it was real. We were stunned into silence

workinglady Wed 11-Sept-24 11:42:03

It seems a very long time ago. It's always a sad/happy time for me, as it is my daughter's birthday today. She was 22 when it happened and she remembers it with great horror.

Fartooold Wed 11-Sept-24 11:51:21

I was in hospital with our son in a single room. Put the TV on and saw the second plane plough into the building as they were filming. It was terrifying I found it traumatising. Those poor people and their families. They will never be forgotten.

Grannyboots1 Wed 11-Sept-24 11:58:19

We were in New Orleans when it happened, half way through a Deep South Tour. The mood of everywhere we went there after was sombre and very sad. A time we will never forget.

Jaberwok Wed 11-Sept-24 12:13:00

We had just returned from holiday in France and were collecting our dog from daughters home. DH was sitting in their sitting room with granddaughter aged 18 months, watching TV. I came in , and thinking he was watching a very unsuitable film, demanded, crossly, for him to turn it back to Playschool. He, white faced told me that it was a news flash and this appalling dreadful event was for real, and happening right now. Terrifying and unbelievable!!

Sar53 Wed 11-Sept-24 13:32:07

It was my mum's birthday and we had taken her for a trip on the London Eye. We were on the way home on the train when anyone with a mobile started getting messages.
We went back to my daughter's house and watched the dreadful events unfold.
RIP x

Horrific day. Never to be forgotten.

My friend flew out to NY the day before. Honeymoon. Ended up being a holiday like no other.

There's a young lady on tiktok who has posted beautiful photos and clips of her and her dad when she was a baby. He had died on 9/11. She was 3 but still remembers him.

So many lives totally ruined on that day.
