For anyone who has missed the news recently Charlie Mullins has announced that he is leaving the UK. Here's a link to Marina Hyde in the Guardian. Other sources are available.

I suspect he was planning on going anyway. Anyone who intends to move to retire to Spain or Dubai, has usually planned it. Both are popular retirement locations.

Charlie Mullins has never been a man who avoided publicity and this going with a bang rather than a whimper is very much his style.

Yes it really is 😂
I think he’ll keep his Rod Stewart hair, ( must be a syrup!) and gleaming white choppers until he’s at least a hundred.Wonder if Dubai or Spain is really ready for him.

Look at the evidence from other sources though Galaxy.

There’s no story there.

GrannyGravy13 Sat 14-Sept-24 09:33:54

We have an extended family member who has closed their UK business, moved to Dubai with their child and started up a similar business there.

They decided as soon as Labour won they were leaving UK.

Don’t know who he is but heard of Pimlico plumbers. cheerio Charlie, off you go to sunny places where shady people roam.

The Guardian item mentioned he was considering Marbella or some sunny location along the notorious Costa Del Crime.

It also mentioned his constant claim to be always getting mistaken for Rod Stewart. Yeah, if you say so Charlie......

If you're a squillionaire and want to take your money abroad, fine.

But you must relinquish your British Citizenship.

Doodledog Sat 14-Sept-24 09:51:12

It’s no big deal. There are always economic migrants coming and going in search of a more money elsewhere. He’s just another one.

Similarly, there is a long tradition of older Brits moving to warmer climates for the sunshine. Again, nothing new.

There will always be enough people who see the UK as home, who value our culture and see being near family and friends as more important than money - some even take pride in paying taxes to the country that has allowed them to thrive and make a success of their lives.

Horses for courses.

Casdon Sat 14-Sept-24 09:59:31

He was suspended from Twitter for saying somebody should kill Sadiq Khan, there are lots of other sources online, including on his Wikipedia page. Sorry the link didn’t work, I’m not sure why.

Wyllow3 Sat 14-Sept-24 10:11:38

Casdon will this do
tellmamauk.org/twitter-suspends-charlie-mullins-for-someone-should-kill-sadiq-khan-tweet/

It gives more details what he actually said, which was very racist.
It has to be quote something for Elon Musk to ban!

What a horrible man, good riddance. Yes, I bet he was headed that way anyway but has an inflated ego and has to score points whatever he does.

Why is that. Does that apply to everyone who retires abroad, or just people who have made money.

You do not have to relinquish your British Citizenship if you move abroad.

You can if you wish apply to renounce your citizenship, and if it is accepted you will get a Certificate of Renunciation

No one seemed bothered that Brexit supporting Dyson moved a lot of his manufacturing to Singapore thus depriving the UK of those jobs. But now someone is doing just that under a Labour government it’s shock horror, what about the workers…shock

Not so. I was concerned that Dyson exported all those jobs.

Just had a quick Google.

James Dyson has approximately 3,500 employees in the U.K.

He paid £156 million in tax to HMRC in the last tax year.

In Singapore he has approximately 1,920 employees of which 560 are engineers or scientists.

Ilovecheese Sat 14-Sept-24 10:56:55

How do you export plumbing jobs?

eazybee Sat 14-Sept-24 11:05:38

Strange, all these attacks on a self-made working man from Labour supporters.

CM sold Pimlico Plumbers for £145 million to Neighborly (owned by a US private equity giant’ three years ago.

He is retired.

GrannyGravy13 Sat 14-Sept-24 11:09:18

He had a house about 15 minutes from us which was on rightmove a while ago, I just had to have a look…

Hats off to anyone who comes from nowhere and makes their fortune , just goes to show that anything is possible if you reach for the stars.

maddyone Sat 14-Sept-24 11:12:26

Thank you for posting the facts re losing/relinquishing your British citizenship if you decide to move abroad GG13.

What a lot of sour grapes being voiced on this thread, about a person who has no impact on any of our lives. It’s his rejection of the new government that appears to be rubbing posters up. Whatever this man is or isn’t, and I have no idea apart from what I saw reported about him yesterday, he’s leaving Britain because he doesn’t want to pay even more taxes than he already pays, in particular he mentioned IHT. Rich people have always left the country under Labour because rightly or wrongly, they see Labour as wishing to tax them more. I don’t care whether he goes or stays, it doesn’t affect me, but if I had a fortune to protect, then I would certainly move abroad. Richard Branson did exactly the same thing, and I don’t recall a thread bashing his decision. Mick Jagger and many others have done this. No comments from GNetters. Additionally many GNetters have moved abroad for their retirement. Do they all deserve pages of condemnation?

Good post GG13.

Ilovecheese Sat 14-Sept-24 11:13:34

Why is anyone worried about his employees if he hasn't got any?

Exactly my thoughts eazybee.

M0nica Sat 14-Sept-24 11:24:32

Why?

What has where he comes from or where he has got to do got to do with the Labour party.

Charlie Mullins is a larger than large character who is a successful business man. As a Conservative supporter and person who likes to grab the headlines, it is entirely within character to make a big to do about leaving the country to retire somewhere hot, a decision he must have made a long time ago, even if only doing it now and using it as an excuse to have a pop at the Labour government at the same time.

I m shocked to see Labour party supporters, so avid in their support of equality and level playing fields, showing that actually when the flak hits the fan they are as partisan and partial as so many of those now in power who are being attacked because of what comes across as cronyism and nepotism in government appointments.

Very strange, since that’s what LP supporters have been heard to proclaim about Starmer.

Doodledog Sat 14-Sept-24 11:31:47

Where are all these attacks on CM?

What I see is yet more opportunities to have a go at the government being snatched, even though the tax rates haven't altered since they were set by the Tories.

It's interesting that those claiming to support him are the ones citing his class, background and accent, and assuming that 'labour supporters' should automatically support someone from his background regardless of his behaviour, or they are somehow being hypocritical.

Personally, as a Labour voter (but not slavish supporter) I couldn't care less about people's backgrounds, and can see no reason why I should.

pascal30 Sat 14-Sept-24 11:42:21

He's marrying a 33 year old woman.. I'm not surprised that he is retiring to Spain with her..

maddyone Sat 14-Sept-24 11:45:20

Haha, is he really?
This story gets funnier the more it goes on grin
