Not for you Sir Keir or Rachel Thieves!

But I expect you know exactly what the words "I am a 5 star liar" mean......

MayBee70 there were several posters who were prolific and vociferous in posting the Conservatives percentage of the votes for the seven years I have been on GN…

On gransnet but I don’t remember it being mentioned as much in the National press as it is now.

When things are not happening as well as expected people seem to rush to deny they actually supported and voted for a particular party. It amazes me that hardly anyone admitted that they voted for Brexit. Funny that.

Do you think Starmer will go for PR, when a small majority of votes got him in?
Everybody talks about the evils of FPTP until they get elected, then it’s seen as OK.

The Labour Party doesn’t support PR, it wasn’t in the manifesto, and the motion at the conference failed - so no.

Having read the first 2 pages of this thread, I wonder why I am on GN. We are all entitled to our opinions of course, we may all have different political expectations, but honestly, some of the posts are silly I honestly think Starmer is trying to kill pensioners.....

I am taking a break from GN.

Correct.

And I believe the last time PR was a 'thing' was at the LP Conferences in '21 and '22.

In 2023 he had what he described as a "longstanding view against proportional representation".

Though during the 2020 Labour leadership election he did say, "On electoral reform, we’ve got to address the fact that millions of people vote in safe seats and they feel their voice doesn’t count. That’s got to be addressed. We will never get full participation in our electoral system until we do that at every level."

... I suppose all politicians revise their ideology, when and as necessary...

Has anyone seen this video on You Tube. It is great. The Anti Starmer comedy song. It has gone viral and says it all.

Brilliant. I've just shared it on Facebook.

I think what they subconsciously mean is that they are "sick of knowing that it is going to be "difficult " & "painful" to sort out the tangles that the country is in." Attacking the messenger is a well-known reaction to bad news, right back to antiquity. That is why those in charge so often fob off the populace with false optimism and half-truths. If they tell the truth about how near to disaster we are and how difficult it will be to pull ourselves out of it, they would be sacked and a new bunch voted in.

"I hope that any of my friends and colleagues, or former colleagues, who are affected by the political reconstruction, will make allowance, all allowance, for any lack of ceremony with which it has been necessary to act. I would say to the House, as I said to those who have joined this government: “I have nothing to offer but blood, toil, tears and sweat.”
Winston Churchill, May 13, 1940

Q E D and it was ever thus.

Difficult and painful

I take it Starmer has never given birth, then.
That can be painful and sometimes difficult.

Cutting benefits for other people can't hurt that much, especially as it doesn't affect them personally.

ronib Mon 16-Sept-24 16:38:56

Well we do have a complete change of fortune from Sunak’s time don’t we? I often wondered where he was as he certainly wasn’t in the public eye every day. Sunak certainly didn’t worry pensioners - I don’t remember him seeing them as a potential money saving target…. Inflation had reduced from 11 percent down to a low level…. And just where are we now?

Casdon Mon 16-Sept-24 16:55:29

It happened ronib, whether you were aware of it or not.

ronib Mon 16-Sept-24 17:07:10

Well let’s hope that someone in government gets their heads round this report Casdon. Should definitely be on the to do list?

MissAdventure Mon 16-Sept-24 17:12:30

I'm confident that they have.

ronib Mon 16-Sept-24 17:14:22

MissAWell not long to wait - end of October for the big reveal.

MissAdventure Mon 16-Sept-24 17:16:14

That leaves weeks for people to get their knickers in a twist then, about things which may or may not happen.

ronib Mon 16-Sept-24 17:50:13

Well they’re not going to be M&S knickers in the Starmer household? I see lady Victoria is modelling her new wardrobe - £1,200 for a jacket? How very new Labour….

MissAdventure Mon 16-Sept-24 17:53:40

Who cares?
Really, who does care?

Well off people have always worn more expensive clothes than those without so much money.

That doesn't include you, obviously, because your husband earns so much, so why would it bother you?

ronib Mon 16-Sept-24 17:59:32

MissA true - I shop charity shops and EBay for my clothes as a moral principle - I wouldn’t expect New High Couture Labour to understand that!

ronib Mon 16-Sept-24 18:02:12

It’s called being sustainable smile

MissAdventure Mon 16-Sept-24 18:06:03

So why on earth does it bother you what others do?

Surprisingly, I do know about sustainability. Thanks though

They do indeed, depressing at times I find.Anything that gets them into power is good as far as they’re concerned, that goes for all political parties.
