Hezbollah Exploding Pagers!

(231 Posts)
GrannyGravy13 Wed 18-Sept-24 08:36:12

9 dead (so far) up to 3,000 Hezbollah operatives injured across Lebanon and Syria.

Apparently the pagers were manufactured in TaiWan and packed with explosives. The Taiwanese producers are vehemently denying this.

Israeli Government is being rather quiet, no statement so far. Hezbollah have said that there will be serious repercussions

It is like a plot from a Johnny English film…

I wish too that everyone remain safe, because most people wherever they live, whoever they are, just want a peaceful life for themselves and their families.
Sadly too many people have already died in violent and cruel ways and the loss and trauma almost guarantees that the next generation grow up and become radicalised. Why wouldn't they after what they have lost.
And so it continues…..

Agree.
Nobody is born wanting to kill others. Sadly some are born into such unbearable oppression and suffering that they feel the only way is violence. And maybe we could say hand on heart we wouldn’t resort to this in similar conditions, or could we? Thankfully the majority of us will never know.

What more is there to say.

Philippa60 I hope you and yours remain safe.

I have just listened to an item on the BBC, it was said that Hezbollah have more weaponry and men than the Lebanese army.

I feel for the civilian population of all the Middle East, there cannot be peace whilst terrorists are armed and backed by hostile forces, Iran!

Philippa60 Wed 25-Sept-24 13:52:36

Yes, Oreo, exactly.
I don't know how much of the geopolitics of the area people understand here, but a few simple facts about Israel's northern border, its border with Lebanon.
There are no territorial issues here - it is a recognised border, in fact UN resolution 1701 clearly states:

UN Resolution 1701 prohibits all armed militias from operating anywhere in all of Lebanon ("no weapons or authority in Lebanon other than that of the Lebanese state" and "full implementation of the relevant provisions of the Taif Accords, and of resolutions 1559 and 1680, that require the disarmament of all armed ...

So Hizbollah is in breach of this resolution and is endangering the state of Lebanon with whom Israel has no conflict.
For almost exactly a year Hizbollah has been shooting rockets into Israel on a daily basis.
For their safety, Israel evacuated 100,000 people from its north border area.
These rockets caused the death of 12 innocent (Arab) children playing football in the north of Israel.

Please tell me who is the aggressor here, and who is in breach of international accords?

Oh and let's not forget that Israel has 101 hostages still being held in the tunnels of Gaza, half of whom are assumed dead.
There can be no ceasefire until they are returned, including the dead to be brought to burial in Israel.

Oreo Wed 25-Sept-24 13:35:18

My comments were addressed to those who just have sympathy with Lebanon btw.

Oreo Wed 25-Sept-24 13:33:45

So, Hezbollah started raining rockets into Israel the very next day after hamas invaded and massacred innocent families who were sleeping in order to back up hamas. How does that sit with you?
Lebanon could be a peaceful country but instead chose not to be but to immediately attack Israel. If left alone Israel would have no reason to be at war in Lebanon, but Hezbollah won’t leave it alone. It’s a terrorist group but also political and well embedded in government and won’t care about civilians or loss of life just as hamas don’t.
Blame Hezbollah!

Philippa60 Wed 25-Sept-24 13:31:58

"Where have you seen that Israel wants to kill all Palestinians, that’s a lie.
Israelis want to live without to be attacked by terrorists, if the attacks on Israel stop the killing would stop".

Thanks for this and a very few others who understand the truth of the situation here in Israel (where I live, so yes, perhaps I am a LITTLE closer to understanding the situation)

Israel does not target civilians EVER.
Of course civilians get hurt, that is a sad and unfortunately inevitable result of war.
But they do the opposite of targeting civilians:
Before bombing Hizbollah targets in Lebanon over recent days, civilians were warned, via radio, text message and other means, to move away from buildings that have been taken over by Hizbollah. Hizbollah have embedded long range missiles, aimed at my home, inside people's homes in Lebanon. Honestly, you couldn't make this stuff up!

What other armies do you know that informed civilians that they were likely to be in harm's way?
The allies in Dresden in WW2 perhaps???

The IDF did the same in Gaza.
Told civilians where to move to, in order to avoid harm.
So what did Hamas do?
Set up missile launchers INSIDE the safe areas!

It's fine to criticize the Israeli government. This is a democracy and a large % of the population here has a lot of criticism of them. But there is a government here, not just a war cabinet (don't remember who wrote that we don't have a government, but only a war cabinet - which is nonsense).
Anyway criticize as much as you want, but slanderous comments like:

"Israel isn’t defending itself. It’s an aggressor who is intent on killing as many innocent people as possible to get what it wants"

are not helpful and are in fact downright LIES.

If anyone is interested in hearing updates from a British citizen living in Israel, I am happy to oblige.

Philippa

Hadn’t realised how small Lebanon is, but has had to cope with many thousands of Palestinian and Syrian refugees from the Golan heights who have lived there since 1948. Israel won’t allow any to return to their homes. It’s a cruel world.

silverlining48 Wed 25-Sept-24 13:16:48

Allira yes that’s right. , I got the wars mixed up. It was the 1982 war when Israel invaded Lebanon and Hezbollah was set up by Iran and not 2006 when Israel also invaded Lebanon.

David49 Wed 25-Sept-24 12:50:31

“I recall the mass killings in the refugee camp of Palestinians in Lebanon in the 1980s Sabra and Shatila, between 1,300 and 3,500 killed, perpetrated by Christian militias in Beirut supported by the IDF.”

That is correct and it ended when the US told them to stop, they then withdrew.

Babs03 Wed 25-Sept-24 12:39:57

If Hezbollah were not there Lebanon would have absolutely no protection against Israel which has made incursions into Lebanon long before Hezbollah came into being. Most of the time when there is peace in that part of the world ordinary Lebanese people don’t like Hezbollah, they are Shi’ite Muslim and backed by Iran which is why they live in their own area in Southern Lebanon, indeed the whole of Lebanon is divided, with Shi’ite Muslims, Sunni Muslims and a large Christian population.
But whenever Israel strikes most Lebanese people are behind Hezbollah purely and simply because nobody else gives a toss.
The simple fact is that Israel has been an aggressor in the region long before Iran had the Ayatollahs, before Hamas and Hezbollah. I recall the mass killings in the refugee camp of Palestinians in Lebanon in the 1980s Sabra and Shatila, between 1,300 and 3,500 killed, perpetrated by Christian militias in Beirut supported by the IDF.
This isn’t just my opinion is historical fact, look it up.
When these things have happened historically, committed by Israel or at their behest, am afraid those who are at the receiving end of such aggression turn to violence. We then call it terrorism. But what do we then call what Israel has been guilty of committing?

David49 Wed 25-Sept-24 12:31:03

“We are close to war where many more will die. Whatever the USA or anyone else says, Israel will not agree to a cease fire.
They are in it to the bitter end in the expectation that they will win and while the west continues to supply them with lethal weapons they probably will.”

Israel certainly listens to the US and we had better hope that continues, currently they will do as much damage to Hezbollah as quickly as they can. Their own defence production cannot produce enough for a sustained offensive campaign, although for defence it probably can.

The cannot afford to ignore an ultimatum from the US, if they ever did that’s when the war gets much worse.

Granny gravy , I read that hezbollah only came about after Israel invaded Lebanon in 2006.

Hezbollah was founded by Shiite clerics, funded by Iran, in 1982, silverlining48

To say someone doesn’t understand @ situation because you don’t agree with that opinion is not helpful to any debate.

You ask if Israel should sit and do nothing. Israel has never sat back and done nothing. From the early days of 1948 when they were killing and bombing the British until now. 75 years later.
Any rockets which come over are taken down by their iron dome system, no one has been reported killed in Israel since this began in Lebanon , where over 500 men women and children were killed just the other day. Over 40,000 dead in Gaza, hundreds more in the West Bank, and yes those who died in Israel on 7 October. Everyone of them mourned by those who love and miss them.

We are close to war where many more will die. Whatever the USA or anyone else says, Israel will not agree to a cease fire.

I completely agree Silverlining

Israel isn’t defending itself. It’s an aggressor who is intent on killing as many innocent people as possible to get what it wants. It needs to be stopped and its so-called allies need to stop supplying armaments. Biden doesn’t want to rock the boat in the run-up to the election. We can only hope that Harris gets in and has the courage to deal with Israel and stop its war-mongering.

This shows that you don’t understand anything about this situation.

I fear you are wasting your time LaCrepescule Perhaps the supporters of Israel have their own motives.

True!
They would like Israel to not be surrounded by enemies whose entire aim is to kill as many Jews as they can. They wish for peace in the middle east and them not to be fired upon daily by terrorists.
Hezbollah have really taken over Lebanon bit by bit, even within the government and now non Hezbollah politicians are helpless to stop them.
Hezbollah in Lebanon starting sending rockets into Israel the very next day, October 8 last year after the atrocities carried out in Israel by hamas scum.
It’s always terrible when children become casualties of war on any side and supporters of Israel hope that there will be a stop to hostilities that Hezbollah started pretty soon, but no country can just sit back and take it.

If Harris wins there is no guarantee that policy will change, it will depend on the situation at the time, the US is not really interested in how many Lebanese die, it’s regional stability that worries them. They will intervene again if Israel is attacked by Iran or others, the UK will be part of that.

It’s not complicated, Lebanon has been attacking Israel for many months Israel is now hitting back.

GrannyGravy13 Wed 25-Sept-24 08:15:39

I am not defending Israel per se!

Hezbolah is a terrorist organisation waging a war on Israel.

They are fully aware of Israel’s weaponry and defence capabilities.

I am more concerned about Iran who is pushing Hezbolahs actions, what is Iran’s agenda.

Civilian get killed in war, that’s a fact. Of course I do not want more deaths, but ask yourselves why Hezbolah has continued to attack Israel after seeing what has happened in Gaza.

Until Hezbolah infiltrated Lebanon it was a beautiful, free country…
