Lord Waheed Alli, has he bought the government?

This man seems to have his tentacles everywhere, another story now of him loaning £1.2 million to Siobhan McDonagh.

I fear there is more to come.

How can a government be honest and upright if the MP’s are in Lord Alli’s pocket?

ronib Fri 27-Sept-24 11:51:09

I think Lord Alli is my preferred candidate to take over from Starmer - I could live with that.

Anniebach

He worked for Maxwell publications, in 1988, aged 24year he moved to broadcasting. 1992 merged with Bob Geldof to form Planet 24 which was reported as extremely successful
So much, so young

Good for him. A bit like Richard Branson perhaps who started a magazine called Student in 1966, aged 16 and then started a mail order company selling records in 1970. The rest is history!

My goodness Sago - how low will you stoop to stir negativity. The chap did a very generous thing for his dying best friend, and was reimbursed.

He has not been reimbursed yet.
The original house needs to be sold once probate has been settled.

Your point is? Do you really think that he lent the apartment and expected to get something in return.

Methinks that you are trying too hard to knock the LP.

LizzieDrip Fri 27-Sept-24 11:44:01

They seem like very sensible suggestions to me. Look at the absence of balance in our media because most of it is owned by Murdoch’s News International - hardly ‘free press’ when it jumps to the tune of one paymaster.

Also, wasn’t a press regulator a recommendation of the Leveson Inquiry, so really should be implemented.

In this case maybe he was being kind but there have been other donations for clothes, loaning a luxury flat to Angela Raynor amongst other gifts.
I just feel this one man is too involved with the Labour party. I know all parties receive freebies and it should stop.

This is ridiculous.

I expect many of us have friends with holiday homes who let us stay in them for a holiday from time to time. The only difference I suspect is that our friends may not be millionaires and so we therefore contribute towards their utility costs.

*He actually suggested, about ten years ago, that it might be beneficial to have a state run press regulator. He also suggested they should be a limit on the number of newspapers one company could own.
All this is now being regurgitated and twisted - not least, it seems, by Namsnanny*

^Thats just silly, you choosing to be using inflammatory language.
I'm just quoting and listening to others.^

*It's not silly he said he wanted a state press REGULATOR not a State Press 😉
Of course if it was an honest misinterpretation on your part it's odd you're still pursuing it.

MaizieD Fri 27-Sept-24 11:31:34

Here we go, it wasn't difficult to find. I can't think why Namsnanny was making such heavy weather of it.

Lord Alli was responding to the publication of the report of the first Leveson Inquiry.

I seem to recall that the Inquiry revealed some horrific press violations of privacy, such as the hacking of a murdered girl's phone. I think this is the 'freedom' that our right wingers want to protect...

Perhaps Lord Alli just wants a Labour government - simple as that🤷‍♀️

I am a Labour Party member and I donate £5 here and there, when I can. I want nothing ‘in return’ other than a Labour government to be running the UK because, I believe, they are better for our country.

As a multi millionaire Lord Alli’s thousands mean the same to him as my fiver does to me.

This thanks

long term friendships, a chance to support a government that Alli believes is heading in the right direction - this is what I saw.

Me too, but we are all different and all see different things.

Hope we are right. thanks

I was just about to ask for a link from you Namsnanny - grin

If you do have one I'd still be interested.

I know he did a lot of good stuff but he seemed like a Tory to me then!

No, no, no, cataracts need removing, I left the Labour Party when Corbyn was leader

So what do you think Labour peer Alli is getting in return for his generosity, eazybee?

This is what I was wondering.

I think its actually some very basic things - long term friendships, a chance to support a government that Alli believes is heading in the right direction: despite looking widely, politically his interests it comes back to what we've already discussed above.

NotSpaghetti Fri 27-Sept-24 10:34:46

I think SureStart was definitely a great idea.
I do hope it is resurrected!

A quote, Jacob Rees Mogg and the Daily Mail, explains much

Wyllow3 Fri 27-Sept-24 10:30:50

Yes, the D Mail speculated

"STEPHEN GLOVER: What does Lord Alli want for his largesse? He's no fan of the free Press and it would be an outrage if he asked Labour to muzzle it"

Alli himself and the Labour Party - I've been a member for years - have never ever put this idea forward or heard it discussed.

Which is why I wanted evidence for "but he does want a state run press/media and anyone who wants to take freedoms away from the public"

Cossy Fri 27-Sept-24 10:10:02

I had a very quick search and all I can find is something in the DM and something from GB news and a quote from Jacob Rees Mogg, all commenting on LA wanting to “muzzle the press”, what I cannot find is his HoL speech specifically outlining his desire to control the media or to have just one govt led news outlet.

Even if he is advocating this, which I think is unlikely, it’s even more unlikely that the LP will seek to instigate this. (In my humble opinion) Just wondering g if it’s possible he’s being quoted with no context?

Cossy Fri 27-Sept-24 10:00:50

What an extraordinary response to a simple request for a link, Namsnanny. hmm

Indeed!

For me, until I see otherwise, LA simply seems like a self-made millionaire with left leaning politics, who has a great interest in maintaining rights for Gay people. So far, I’ve seen nothing at all to make me think he wants to stifle freedom of speech.

I’m always just a little wary of those who say don’t believe MSM (yes, we all know most is biased) but then refuse to give sources or links.

If one isn’t getting info from MSM, where is it coming from?

Most of us do take our info from a number of different media sources, to get a balance, but where can we find all the other sources which aren’t MSM??
