Lord Waheed Alli, has he bought the government?

(334 Posts)

This man seems to have his tentacles everywhere, another story now of him loaning £1.2 million to Siobhan McDonagh.

I fear there is more to come.

How can a government be honest and upright if the MP’s are in Lord Alli’s pocket?

Anniebach Thu 26-Sept-24 13:36:57

Her sister is terminally ill, she needed to live on the ground floor, he loaned the money interest free until they sold their home living in.

AGAA4 Thu 26-Sept-24 13:47:28

I do think Lord Alli has too much influence. I believe he has given a huge amount of money over the years to the Labour party.

Anniebach Thu 26-Sept-24 13:49:05

The Conservative Party doesn’t have donations ?

Wyllow3 Thu 26-Sept-24 13:49:22

Thank you Anniebach: it just shows how mean and uninformed some criticisms can be.

This O/P really takes the biscuit, criticising him for helping someone terminally ill.

Wyllow3 Thu 26-Sept-24 13:52:17

Anniebach

The Conservative Party doesn’t have donations ?

Frank Hester alone donated a total of 15 million, yes, 15 million pounds.

OldFrill Thu 26-Sept-24 13:56:57

My goodness Sago - how low will you stoop to stir negativity. The chap did a very generous thing for his dying best friend, and was reimbursed.

Thank you for providing this info, this 'witchhunt' is getting boring now.

Anniebach Thu 26-Sept-24 14:00:23

Surely not the Tory party Wyllow not the Frank Hester who
said ‘look at Diana Abbot makes you want to hate all black women ‘ she should be shot ‘ , not that man, the Tory party accepted a huge donation after he said this ?

AGAA4 Thu 26-Sept-24 14:07:43

In this case maybe he was being kind but there have been other donations for clothes, loaning a luxury flat to Angela Raynor amongst other gifts.
I just feel this one man is too involved with the Labour party. I know all parties receive freebies and it should stop.

westendgirl Thu 26-Sept-24 14:08:34

Yes, Nana K54 this witchhunt is indeed not necessary .
Every day the stirrers are out and I wonder if they can see how petty minded it makes them appear.
Please stop it . If there is anything that is illegal I'm sure we shall be informed. I think it's time positivity should come to the fore.Try patience.

A Labour Party member too involved with the Labour Party?

Wyllow3 Thu 26-Sept-24 14:35:26

Indeed Anniebach, he's not an outsider drifted in once wealthy or even recently in order to gain perks: he was made a peer in the late 1990's. He's a committed insider.

I have just been on a google and Compared to Hestor's 15 million:

"In total the 59-year-old television entrepreneur has donated £500,000 to Labour over the past two decades but had mostly remained a background figure in the party". (Evening standard)

"Politically his main interventions of significance in the H of L was made in the late 1990’s when he was first made a peer and were on gay rights, and he has said he regards it as his main legacy". (The Times)

Wyllow3 Thu 26-Sept-24 14:46:23

The would be leader of the Conservative Party, Robert Jenrick, has accepted more than £100.000 in gifts since the election

Its in the declaration of MP's interests for all to see, and we dont even know what the gifts bought, its not in the declarations

If we have suddenly to have new moral standards, in the media and indeed, in GN, why are we not applying them across the board?
I don't disagree with limitations, btw, but if you make it your job to pick on one MP, then do it for all.

vegansrock Thu 26-Sept-24 14:46:26

Are there any hints at impropriety here? Does he gain millions in lucrative government contracts like the Tory donors? Answer: no

He’s been “involved” as a donor for many many years, 20+ years.

He appears honest and has made his fortune himself.

Is there really no end to Labour bashing?

Anniebach Thu 26-Sept-24 15:19:42

Labour bashing started the day Starmer became PM , such anger, such desperation, after 14 years of !

eazybee Thu 26-Sept-24 15:20:43

A Labour Party member too involved with the Labour Party?

Yes, He is clearly buying influence and targeting those he considers to have the most power.. As has been said elsewhere, Conservative were criticised relentlessly, some of it warranted. Now you have to accept there is concern about this man and saying Tories did it doesn't make it any more honourable.
He is not supporting the Labour Party, few donations during the Corbyn years, although plenty previously to Blair, who gave him his peerage. Now money is lavished on the Starmer family; Reeves, Rayner and Phillipson and others were targeted with personal gifts known as office expenses.

A protege of Alli's, Matthew Faulding, who worked in his BM Creative Management company, was put in charge of candidate selection for the General Election and blamed for imposing favoured candidates on Labour Associations without their agreement. He is now Secretary of the Parliamentary Labour Party,' keeping them all in check' apparently.

MaizieD Thu 26-Sept-24 15:24:28

So what do you think Labour peer Alli is getting in return for his generosity, eazybee?

Anniebach Thu 26-Sept-24 15:29:15

He supported Labour during Blair as leader, not during Corbyn
as leader, now supporting Starmer ? I joined the Labour Party in 1963, left during the Corbyn time as did many, back with the
party when Starmer elected as leader

Wyllow3 Thu 26-Sept-24 15:41:31

Yes, he is aligned with more centrist Labour Party politics post Corbyn. And thank goodness given the mess we were in post 2019. (Having sat through endless CLP meetings)

Is this improper, or normal conflicts within a political party?
Can we have an analysis of how power was obtained and used over the last 5 years in the Conservative Party too, please?

Wyllow3 Thu 26-Sept-24 15:44:00

MaizieD

So what do you think Labour peer Alli is getting in return for his generosity, eazybee?

Yes, key question, for as I said above, apart for his interest in gay rights way back, he has not been active in any articular aspect of policy within his seat in the HoL.

Reading some of the posts on this thread it makes me realise how lucky I've been with my friends. I've been helped in so many ways over the years and I've never once felt that that help came with strings attached. That's obviously not been everyone's experience as they find it impossible to believe that a gift can come without the expectation of a future benefit. I've read nothing to suggest that Lord Alli has benefitted in any way from his support of his friends in the labour party except a temporary pass to number 10 whilst he was organising a party to thank donors which was returned weeks ago. tbh it sounds more like a matter of convenience to me than a scandalous event! With regard to why number 10?well I think that's pretty obvious, number 10 is a symbol of being in government.

I too have been very fortunate with my friends over the years, and I appreciate every single thought and feed from them, all done without wanting anything in return.
