Last night I watched the documentary on BBC 2 about the attack on the Israeli Music Festival by Hamas. How anyone can not justify the Israel response is beyond me. The footage had me in tears, innocent young people enjoying a festival were hunted down and shot like animals , the terrorists were all laughing and smiling clearly enjoying their actions as if they were playing a video game, One poor girl could be seen naked in the back of a pick up truck held down by 4 or five men , while others spat on her. It's not hard to imagine what fate awaited her. And yet Israel are now perceived as the baddies in all of this for retaliating to an unprovoked attack. Where were all the protests against Hamas. Unbelievable.

chathamhouse.org has extensive information on the Middle East if anyone wants an in-depth analysis.

GrannyGravy you are absolutely correct. Unfortunately we have Ed Milligan in charge of our energy policy so I think there’ll be a change of mind.

The decision to close Port Talbot was made when the Conservatives were still in government.

DH and I both said, before all this happened, that the Port Talbot blast furnace should not have been shut down until the new more environmentally friendly furnace was ready to begin operations.

Just watched an Iranian intellectual towing the Party line but I noticed he pushed the usual button that frightens the West; that is, invade us and all of the Middle East will burn and who would then supply your oil. They hope this has us over a barrel.
Economics are important and we do so love their oil.

We should be energy secure closing and no more exploration in the North Sea is playing into their hands. Germany is still mining coal, perhaps it’s time to rethink?

As for closing Port Talbot, we will now have to import for any infrastructure projects, anything that requires steel…

They have just said on the morning news that U.K. fighter jets were in the air and intercepting (shooting down) the ballistic missiles fired from Iran.

I haven’t heard the news this morning. Last night was very frightening. Starmer was clear about standing with Israel.

The Russian, Minister Mishustin is in Iran meeting with Iranian President and ministers at the moment, that is what I find worrying.

^We have already deployed more troops to Cyprus.^
In case they need to evacuate civilians.

Absolutely, we are a military family and know the score

America will have to come in now.

I sincerely hope not, as we would have to follow.

We have already deployed more troops to Cyprus.

Philippa60 Tue 01-Oct-24 19:07:23

I guess Israel will have to retaliate.
Can't imagine this will go without a response.
181 Iranian missiles fired at the country, minimal damage and apparently one person from Gaza the only casualty....

Wyllow3 Tue 01-Oct-24 19:01:52

I doubt that, unless it continues.

It's retaliation for the Hezbollah leader, I presume.

Allira Tue 01-Oct-24 19:01:02

Well, I hope not.

I think the missiles have stopped for the time being. Israel has reopened its air space.
What a completely pointless display of stupidity by Iran. Saudi Arabia is staying very quiet too.

I am thinking of you and your family Philippa. I was horrified when I saw the BBC news at six o clock and saw what is happening.
I am praying for your safety and the safety of all civilians, wherever they are, tonight.

Ditto 🙏

I echo this.

What a terrible situation for all innocent civilians. sad

Am hoping they managed to deflect a lot of the 200 missiles, an awful time for you all there.🙏
Let’s hope that like last time from Iran, this missile shower will be the only act from them and it will be enough to say they’ve done something.

Philippa60 Tue 01-Oct-24 18:29:36

So I have spent the last hour in our safe room watching in horror as Iran has fired an estimated few hundred missiles into Israel, including my small town.
This is NOT a military target.
It is a quiet town and it is just unbelievable that this can happen.
Iran has declared war on us and I imagine there will be a strong response.
My poor DD and her husband and 4 kids are crowded into a tiny safe room. No sleep for any of them tonight I imagine.
I've begged them to come here (our safe room is a little larger and there is a sofa bed in it) but they are too scared to drive the 5 minutes from them to us.
Thank you for your thoughts and prayers.
We need them right now
