A woman of integrity.

Anniebach Mon 30-Sept-24 16:38:05

So every MP should be independent? could not work

maddyfour Mon 30-Sept-24 16:28:56

unless you feel that it’s acceptable for all MPs to free vote on every issue with no party accountability

Yes, I do.
I don't agree with the whipping system actually.

sharon103 Mon 30-Sept-24 16:15:16

Spinnaker

Let's hope this is just the beginning of his downfall 🤞

I certainly hope so.

Casdon Mon 30-Sept-24 15:59:35

Is that not what MPs promise their voters ronib?
Do you seriously think all MPs should stand for themselves without any party allegiance and that voters should expect them to vote just as they please on every issue?

ronib Mon 30-Sept-24 15:53:45

Casdon but since when has any manifesto ever been delivered?
I think a great improvement is to forget all this party allegiance and allegiance to the country MPs are elected to serve. Bring it on ….

Casdon Mon 30-Sept-24 15:38:17

ronib

Anniebach I think the Crown takes priority over party?

You know exactly what Anniebach meant ronib. Allegiance to the crown is something all MPs do, and it’s not pertinent in this context, is it? If any MP stands for a party, they are promising the electorate that they will deliver that party’s manifesto on their behalf. That’s why people choose that particular candidate. Unless you feel that it’s acceptable for all MPs to free vote on every issue with no party accountability, perhaps?

After reading the thread and googling, I guess she is a "marmite" person: she does have a long history of disputes:

in January 2022 Sky News reported

Rosie Duffield: Labour MP considering leaving party over 'obsessive harassment' from current and former members:

Ms Duffield, who represents the seat of Canterbury in Kent, said the party under both Jeremy Corbyn and successor Sir Keir Starmer has "offered me no support at all since I unexpectedly became an MP five years ago".

Anniebach Mon 30-Sept-24 15:14:14

She campaigned as a Labour candidate, she would have been selected to stand ,

ronib Mon 30-Sept-24 15:10:56

Anniebach I think the Crown takes priority over party?

Anniebach Mon 30-Sept-24 15:08:36

Yes some conservative MP have praised her .

*ronib’ FYI I didn’t speak of the oath but the promise one makes when declaring one’s party allegiance and when meeting and greeting as the prospective Labour MP

Wyllow3 Mon 30-Sept-24 15:01:07

No, As of today, the praise she has received has been from mainly Conservative MP's. I see no dominos.

ronib Mon 30-Sept-24 15:01:03

True allegiance to the Crown is the oath. FYI

ronib Mon 30-Sept-24 14:57:35

What promises exactly?? Anniebach

Anniebach Mon 30-Sept-24 14:50:11

Are there many Labour MPs waiting to cast aside their promises to their electorate?

brownbunny17 Mon 30-Sept-24 14:48:52

Good for her XX

Wyllow3 Mon 30-Sept-24 14:47:05

orly

Well done, Rosie. I'm waiting for the domino effect now.

I think you are really over estimating her influence and popularity within the party.

Mollygo Mon 30-Sept-24 14:42:51

Excellent post @ 13.03 Rosie.

When it came to standing against the trans lobbyists RD wasn't simply expressing her ^personal strongly held views^Iam she was stating biological fact and standing up for the rights of natal women, something which too many in positions of power/authority/influence were afraid unwilling to do.

Two recent visits from local councillors - Labour and Green, neither of whom could agree that biological sex is immutable, (I had to explain that word) and that they would be willing to take that fact to the PM, or their party leader, even though one claims in his election leaflets, to be an independent voice.
All the noise about freebies has allowed female rights to be brushed aside, maybe Starmer sees some good in the kerfuffle.

orly Mon 30-Sept-24 14:29:34

Well done, Rosie. I'm waiting for the domino effect now.

lizzypopbottle Mon 30-Sept-24 14:17:01

PM salary 2024 £167,000+ plus expenses and freebies
MP basic salary: £91,346 plus expenses and some get freebies for lobbying (2024)
Chancellor of the Exchequer: £163,891 plus expenses and freebies (2024)
Home Secretary: I can only find info for 2022 on Google. It was £159,038 plus expenses and freebies. It will be a good bit more now.
Cabinet Minister: I can't find up to date into but I'm sure they get additional salary over and above the basic MP amount.

They can all claim rent allowance and travel costs if their main residence is in their constituency outside London.

Surely these people can afford to buy their own clothes?

Average UK salary 2024 £35,830 (approx)

Wyllow3 Mon 30-Sept-24 14:15:29

She's cashed in already - I know this is quite an old reference, but it tells its own story:

Nyman1962 Mon 30-Sept-24 14:06:57

She has no more integrity than any of the other politicians.
She has ensured her name is known nationally and she will be duly cashing in and benefitting from it no doubt in her own way.

JuBut Mon 30-Sept-24 13:57:23

Well done!! You have integrity 👏

elljayaitch Mon 30-Sept-24 13:56:21

When I heard the announcement her resignation I too thought - at last - an MP with principles - then I discovered she too had accepted freebies - pot/kettle???
Then I realised she had resigned from the party only - and was holding her position in Parliament - I’m now not so impressed by her actions - I wholeheartedly agree with the sentiments she expressed - but would have been more impressed had she resigned her seat & triggered a by election. She could then have stood as an independent candidate- and her victory as such might have made Starmer realise how badly he’s now thought of! I’m not now not quite so impressed by her gesture. (Though I do wish more MPs would have the courage of their convictions - rather than (just like my own MP ) being “yes men”

Anniebach Mon 30-Sept-24 13:54:42

Her history is of no importance compared to a personal attack on the PM, she is now a woman of principle

Wyllow3 Mon 30-Sept-24 13:53:33
