Who will be our next Conservative leader? Who is right for the job?

Out of the current batch of contenders my vote goes to Tom Tugendhat.

I saw him interviewed by Laura Kuenssberg the other week, he explained about the part of the ECHR he thought wasn’t working for the U.K. regarding the deportation of failed asylum seekers.

Looking at Europe France, Germany and several other countries are deporting failed asylum seekers to their countries of origin.

Not a Conservative party member or voter so I don't have any influence but I can't say any of them inspire me as potentially good leaders of the opposition. I think the party has shown a lack of good competition for that position, hence some of the latest holders of the post.

I did want to try and open a genuine space about persons and politics in the next opposition party as it isn't being discussed elsewhere.

None of them.

Well done eazybee! You’ve managed to turn a post about the possible next Tory leader into an attack on KS.

Oh, I am a Tory voter; I have not yet made up my mind, but I am all in favour of leaving the ECHR.
What I hope for is that those who are not chosen will not resort to infighting; it was one of the causes of the Party's defeat.
It is already emerging in the present Government under a Leader who stood as man of high moral integrity, (he almost convinced me) but is being disproved day after day.
I always thought there would be a concentrated attack on Starmer to displace him by a coup, but I never thought he would provide them with quite so much ammunition quite so soon.

Precious few Conservative voters on Gnet - hence the poor response? Seems predominantly Labour?

Wyllow3 Sun 29-Sept-24 12:06:23

Perhaps I could have titled it better.

This thread would be more interesting if Conservative voters answered more it’s their leader after all.
I watched the Trevor Philips programme this morning and thought all four sounded OK but thought Tugendhat spoke well.

I am a sometime Tory voter. Though cant remember the last time I voted Tory.

As I more or less said upthread, if the Leader was more like Thatcher, I wouldnt much hesitate to vote Tory again.

Yes, I've tried before too, but presumably people have alternatives as to "what can be done"?

*Oreo*, given that there are 4/5 threads on KS, I had genuinely hoped we'd hear from Conservative voters as to what they want in terms of policy and leadership.

I started a thread on the Conservative leadership contest, but it didn’t receive much traction.

They are the opposition so not as important as the Government.

I don’t think there’ll be much on other issues until a new leader is chosen in November.

I'd rather Cleverly got the job, simply because I think that a more centrist Party will prove to provide a realistic opposition based on day by day, week by week, policy issues.

whats lacking in GN for me - unless I've missed stuff - is how out Conservatives want to see the party shape up. Lots of criticism, but where are the policy proposals on NHS, Schools, care, and how they would be funded etc?

I’ve not seen much tangible on this front, so hard to judge, but we do need good strong fair opposition.

Looking at that line up it just ensures that I won’t vote Conservative.

fancythat Sun 29-Sept-24 10:23:52

The one most like Thatcher. Tugendhat?

Grantanow Sun 29-Sept-24 10:22:14

None of the above.

I can’t forgive Tugendhat for saying he is prepared to take us out of the ECHR.

LizzieDrip Sun 29-Sept-24 10:08:22

Badenhoch pleasesmile

keepingquiet Sun 29-Sept-24 10:05:49

Yes Tugendhat would be my choice if I had a vote.

However, Badenhoch and Jenrick might just complete the job of finishing the party off. So for that reason I might vote for Badenhoch.

Wyllow3 Sun 29-Sept-24 09:36:14

I only have a very vague idea at the moment what the Conservatives stand for or want, I'd like to hear more. Cleverly and Tugendhat are described as more centrist.

Grandmabatty Sun 29-Sept-24 09:19:58

They all seem much of a muchness to me and any of them will swing the Tory Party even further to the right. I would have liked a more moderate person to be in the ring.

Wyllow3 Sun 29-Sept-24 09:14:25

It’s the Conservative Party conference this week - we seem to have heard very little of it in the media - yet they are choosing the next opposition leader.

Jenrick, Badenhoch, Cleverly and Tugendhat:

What kind of Conservative Party will we see?

Here are the candidates:
