Who will be our next Conservative leader? Who is right for the job?

It’s the Conservative Party conference this week - we seem to have heard very little of it in the media - yet they are choosing the next opposition leader.

Jenrick, Badenhoch, Cleverly and Tugendhat:

What kind of Conservative Party will we see?

Here are the candidates:

Did they make up all the lies and dishonesty then ? I would have thought they would be sued if this was the case. Maybe not. Perhaps they can manufacture anything they want .

Nanna8 are you referring to Labour here?

If so, what ‘lies and dishonesty’ do you mean?

Wyllow3 Wed 09-Oct-24 09:10:29

I hope we end up today with Cleverly v Jenrick, feel Badenhoch tho popular with members will pull the party away towards Reform ideas.

Down to three now.

You mean the media’s portrayal of the Labour Party? Hate to break this to you but they’re here for 5 years. Probably longer if the Conservative Party doesn’t begin to remember what their core values used to be.

I think the Government has forgotten its core values too.

At least the Trades Unions think so.

I'm afraid that if anyone thinks the're going to get the truth fron Johnson in his 'memior' then I have a bridge to sell them..

I had to laugh at his latest interview gem today. Apparently he claimed that when he and his then mistress took over the flat at No 11 Downing St it was 'like a crack den'. The previous occupant was Theresa May😂

I do recall his reported comments at the time about it being full of John Lewis furniture. Crack dens must have gone up in the world...

I shall look at her with new eyes 😯

From crack den to what sounded like a tart's boudoir!

He just can't help smirking, can he. Perhaps it's just the way his face is arranged, I don't know what it is. 🤔

I don't think any of the current offering are really good enough to be honest.

I hope the tories can re-build as Labour did after the electorate clearly rejected what it saw as extreme views. We need a strong, decent opposition. We do not need Kemi as its leader. She’s after the Reform voters
I agree Iam

I think Cleverly may win but who knows.

I wish there was a new face amongst them. This all seems a bit "same old...." to me.

It is often the case however that when a government loses power after years and years in office there is rarely a new dynamic group ready in waiting without a period of re-grouping.

ronib Wed 09-Oct-24 11:03:41

Wyllow3 do you have an opinion on Farage and Reform? There’s definitely regrouping from the Conservatives to Reform. I don’t know how far this will damage the Conservatives in the next election but I think it will be considerable.

Chocolatelovinggran Wed 09-Oct-24 11:31:08

Oh Allira, I will look at Theresa May with more respect now that I learn that her taste in decor is " crack den". Who knew?!
Maybe Mr Johnson is being just a smidgen untruthful...surely not..

Chocolatelovinggran Wed 09-Oct-24 11:32:26

Oh, sorry, MaizieD and Allira.

Does this mean that Johnson must know what a crack den looks like?

Have you got a few hours of so? I think you can assume from past postings I'm very critical of Reform and Farage.

When you refer to a re-grouping, Are you talking about voter preference:
or of people who are actually Conservative Party members leaving to join Reform? (Genuinely don't know if any did?)

When we get down to parliament functioning with an opposition taking an active part, it remains to be seen whether Reform get involved in the real nitty gritty of social policy, how to gt NHS, Social Care, Education, Prisons and judicial system back on track

Or stay on the sidelines sniping or try to stir up matters such as discussed on GN
www.gransnet.com/forums/news_and_politics/1341262-The-Reform-Party-plans-private-prosecution-of-men-in-Manchester-Airport-fight-with-police-Five-MPs-write-to-Home-Secretary-over-concerns-officers-involved-have-been-thrown-under-bus-while-men-have-g

It's up to Conservatives I think as to whether they want to draw a clear line between themselves and Reform. I hope they do.

Wyllow3 I have a vague idea that ex Conservative councillors and those actively involved in politics as opposed to GNet are now veering towards Reform.
I agree that so far with only five seats in parliament that Reform has yet to make much of an impact. I guess but don’t know that Reform will spend the next four years growing its base. Labour has not exactly inspired the country so all up for grabs?

Where have you got this information from ronib? It’s interesting to me, as I know a couple of councillors myself, and they are very much for digging in and regenerating the Tories, they don’t give credence to Reform. It’s all anecdotal though, unless you know something concrete that I haven’t heard?

MayBee70 Wed 09-Oct-24 15:13:08

Thankfully the only Conservative councillor I actually knew personally switched to the LibDems because he was so disgusted by his party; this after a lifetime of loyalty to them. And I think the party got even worse after that.

Wyllow3 Wed 09-Oct-24 15:19:33

Well, the result of who will be left as the two Conservative contenders to be announced in 12 minutes at 3.30pm....

....

Sillymoo Wed 09-Oct-24 15:31:56

Cleverly eliminated! What a shock.

Wyllow3 Wed 09-Oct-24 15:33:17

Oh no - Jenrick and Badenhoch left in. Party shifts to the right, away from its centrist roots.

Casdon Wed 09-Oct-24 15:34:19

Crikey. Good news for Labour though.

Wyllow3 Wed 09-Oct-24 15:37:14

42 for Kemi Badenoch
41 for Robert Jenrick
37 for James Cleverly

ronib Wed 09-Oct-24 15:39:05

Casdon in conversation with the Reform candidate at the last election- yes anecdotal but he seemed very sure of his convictions. I am sure that he was not the only one to switch from the way the conversation went.

This, on speed! And the Party is ont he verge of another massive shift to the Right, the far right even! How anyone can nowadays still consider voting Tory is just beyond me.

Are those two part of the dreaded ERG btw?

LizzieDrip Wed 09-Oct-24 15:49:26

Badenoch v Jenrick!

Thank you very much Tories - made my daygrin

Allira Wed 09-Oct-24 15:51:29

Ah well, back to Ed Davey next time 😁
