"An extreme right-wing group with links to a violent white supremacist collective has been recruiting young men to support its efforts to "revive" what it called England's "warrior culture" by masquerading as a sports club, a BBC investigation has found.

Active Club (AC), which hails World War Two Nazi leader Adolf Hitler as a hero, claims to be "peaceful and legal" and focus on male friendship and fitness.

The group arrived in the UK in 2023 and has since set up branches in Northern Ireland, Scotland and various regions of England, including the North West, the Midlands, London and East Anglia.

Its closed social networks contain:

*Photographs of members celebrating Hitler's birthday with a swastika-covered cake

*Images of members wearing t-shirts emblazoned with the term Waffen-SS, the name of the Nazi combat branch during World War Two

*Evidence of recruits brandishing racist banners in public places
Messages in the wake of the Southport stabbings encouraging people "not to sit idly by"

*Guidance on how to avoid police detection in the riots that followed those stabbings

And further information.

The far right parties gaining ground throughout Europe all have a common thread. Uncontrolled immigration. It is causing all sorts of problems and many nationals in those countries are fed up with their successive Governments promising to do this, that and the other to curb migration but nothing ever happens. I am anti violence of any kind. It doesn't solve anything in my book but I was not surprised to see the recent riots exploding onto our streets. I was more surprised that they had taken so long.

I’m not really surprised.
I don’t come across racism in my everyday life, I never have done.
That doesn’t mean it doesn’t happen, it means I don’t experience it.
When I worked in the inner city with a variety of people of of all different races and religions, well Christianity and Islam and no religion, I experienced no racism. Was that because I was the teacher? Maybe racism happened out on the street.
I live in an area that is almost exclusively white. There is a lady from South America who lives in my little Close, married to a white English man, but otherwise when I go out, everyone is white. I suspect that is the case for many of us living outside of cities.
I don’t pretend to understand the aims or objectives, whatever they are, of any white supremacist groups, but I don’t understand why other groups do other things either. I don’t join groups or political parties.
Don’t most of us just live quiet lives like I do?

That’s because at our core humans are tribal.

You are probably right.

I didn’t mention immigration but if that is your take on it you are entitled to your opinion.

Obviously, violence is very far from being an answer.

But as I say, completely ignoring a large group of people, isnt.
I feel I have gone around in a circle with my comments.

Galaxy Fri 04-Oct-24 10:24:31

Yes all of that and then being completely surprised by the Brexit vote or the support for Reform.

fancythat Fri 04-Oct-24 10:23:09

Or belittling a group, or patronising them, or any number of things.
Or making up excuses, reasons.
Anything, rather than taking anything a group has to say, at all seriously.

Galaxy Fri 04-Oct-24 10:23:08

At the same time as we are being told of the importance to listening to terrorist groups, or the problem will continue, we are also being told we shouldnt listen to the concerns of this particular group.

fancythat Fri 04-Oct-24 10:21:19

Or perhaps worse, dismissing them.

fancythat Fri 04-Oct-24 10:20:51

Totally ignoring any group of people, in any walk of like, anywhere, for a length of time,
is asking for trouble.

Perhaps they feel ignored and threatened. Perhaps they feel there are not enough jobs available for them. Perhaps they feel no one listens to them. Perhaps they feel other groups are being favoured and given more than they are. Perhaps they feel indigenous people are being persecuted and they are treated more harshly than non indigenous people.

Maybe they just like blaming others.

eggplant Fri 04-Oct-24 10:05:34

indigenous people are being persecuted

Persecuted? How exactly? Ignored, excluded, left behind, undervalued. Yes I see that.

How is any of this connected with immigration?

All of this>

When my husband worked in Singapore he said there was a lot of racism between Malaysian and Chinese people. Really noticeable. It is not confined to one race.

A friend of mine who I met years ago at ante natal, hails from Penang and is ethnically Chinese and Buddhist, she's always told me that, the Chinese don't really get on with their Muslim compatriots in Malaysia. Ethnic divisions are sometimes exported abroad and there are deeper divisions within some immigrant communities than there are with the indigenous populations. .

ExDancer Fri 04-Oct-24 09:33:23

WHY are people so concerned that they feel the need to gather in these groups? Do they have a point to make (even if they're not making it in the right way)

Galaxy Fri 04-Oct-24 09:27:51

If we are talking about terrorism in this country then no I have very little concern about white supremacist groups.

I'd be very concerned, as a few posters here are suggesting, that schools be responsible for imparting any form of political instruction early on to this group. Concerned for the welfare of the teachers, I mean.
Most knowledge is gained from tiktok, which is more far reaching than classroom instruction anyway. And more dangerous. It has become universal, not just UK.
