Apologies for inaccurate post.
That doesn’t mean I don’t believe Putin wants to destabilise Europe and the us

^There is now evidence the Russian state deliberately inflamed anti immigrant feelings by giving false information that the murderer was a young Muslim man who arrived in a small boat a week earlier. A false name was included to make the lies more believable. ^
Following this the perpetrators were thought to be a man living in India, a Canadian, an American and one other, possibly British, who ran a small internet company that would post anything for money. Cannot recall names or identities now.
I remember the post appearing on Gransnet and several posters believing it.

Added info I remember the post also and the beliefs. Easybee is right about the perps

The website that posted the false rumours was not deemed to have links with Russia.

They’re all linked to Channel3Now - a website whose story giving a false name for the 17-year-old charged over the Southport attack was widely quoted in viral posts on X. Channel3Now also wrongly suggested the attacker was an asylum seeker who arrived in the UK by boat last year.”

“What I found appears to be a commercial operation attempting to aggregate crime news while making money on social media.

I did not find any evidence to substantiate claims that Channel3Now’s misinformation could be linked to the Russian state

The person claiming to be from Channel3Now’s management told me that the publication of the false name “shouldn’t have happened, but it was an error, not intentional”.

www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c5y38gjp4ygo#:~:text=They're%20all%20linked%20to,UK%20by%20boat%20last%20year.

I was also not trying to suggest in the O/P it came from Russia, but that he used information from a Russian Website on Arson.

Good posts grannygravy. Yes to teaching political studies and our countries history
When I worked in probation/child care late seventies early eighties almost all families had working members. When I retired ten years ago the vast majority were moving into third generation on benefits

growstuff Thu 03-Oct-24 11:00:23

I agree with you absolutely GrannyGravy, especially the bit about encouraging children to reach for the stars. I once worked in a school where the headteacher gave a talk at the beginning of every school year about reaching for the stars and landing at the top of the trees, but reaching for the top of the tree and landing somewhere in a bush.

I do think the U.K. and other Countries need to have an in-depth look at why there are so many disenfranchised young predominantly white males who are open to this sort of persuasion.

I think, in part, they are the product of ignorant and often racist parents, who mistakenly blame others for their own lack of achievements.

Then we as a society need to look at how the circle can be broken.

Unfortunately like all things if it happens at home it’s difficult. It will come down to education, more political studies taught in schools would be a start.

Encouraging our children to reach for the stars not a life of odd jobs and UC.

I find it hard to believe that people do not think that Vladimir Putin plays mind games via bots and social media fake accounts.

Iam64 Thu 03-Oct-24 08:43:09

I first read about Putin’s involvement in influencing the Brexit vote along with reports he had said he would flood Europe with people seeking sanctuary a couple of years ago. The claims were dismissed as nonsense, conspiracy theories by some. There is now evidence the Russian state deliberately inflamed anti immigrant feelings by giving false information that the murderer was a young Muslim man who arrived in a small boat a week earlier. A false name was included to make the lies more believable.

I wonder if the fact it’s hard to believe that Putin could be determined to de-stabilise us and other European countries is why this thread has not attracted many posts

Wyllow3 Thu 03-Oct-24 00:42:11

I thought "the almighty mess" referred to the subject of the thread, the far right riot stirring,
but if you were referring to the post made in error FriedGreenTomatoes, thank you flowers.

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Wed 02-Oct-24 19:38:23

Yes which is why I apologised.

keepingquiet Wed 02-Oct-24 19:38:13

Yes well and we played in to Putin's hands when we voted for Brexit.

What an almighty mess.

FriedGreenToms - thanks for trying to exclude your post from this thread, maybe start one of insp Ehikioya. My fear if his complaint about driving when black is likely to be correct

Yes, please do start one separately. It needs its own discussion: as you say, you mistakenly posted on here.

The White supremacy group I alluded to earlier in the week also had anti semitic memes

Iam64 Wed 02-Oct-24 19:30:02

Wyllow3 many thanks for this. It’s terrifying that Russia can ferment descent and anger here, based on absolute lies

Apologies, this thread was about the summer riots and I went off piste.

That said ‘misinformation’ with an agenda seems to be rife these days. Even from those in positions of high responsibility.

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Wed 02-Oct-24 19:09:54

And it comes at us from ALL angles it appears…

“Racist, violent texts’ from black police chief
Inspector faces gross misconduct hearing that could lead to dismissal over ‘inappropriate’ WhatsApps

THE chairman of the Met’s Black Police Association faces being sacked from the force for allegedly sending racist and misogynistic WhatsApp messages.

In August 2020, Insp Ehikioya accused his employer of exercising an “abuse of power” when he was pulled over by two white officers “for no other reason other than the fact that they have seen a black man driving a car”.

He said at the time: “I just feel they have done this because I am black and this is well out of order and it shouldn’t be the reason you go round intimidating members of the public.”

It seems the perpetrator of the site publishing this material is Finnish and lives in Finland. BBC invetigative reporters have done the research that enabled them to indetify him and when challenged, he said, he would sue the BBC for revealing who he was.

This was on R4 6.00pm news today.

Social media does, as do the ignorant, disgusting, morons who perpetuate this!

Oh, absolutely - they are the ones who start it all, but social media has unfortunately given them an easy platform on which to spread their vile views.

Wyllow3 Wed 02-Oct-24 18:51:27

Just follows up from another white supremacy group I've posted this week, either, and the leaders off abroad.

We were just watching this on the news. Social media has a lot to answer for with this kind of thing.

More key information on the behind the scenes agitator who used a Russian arson manual, and not only anti muslim but anti semtitist white supremacy memes

"The 20-year-old was an administrator in the Southport Wake Up group on the Telegram messaging app, where he was known as “Mr AG”.

He posted the arson manual, which was pinned to the top of the group chat.
In late July and early August, the group was key in helping to organise and provoke protests that turned to violence in England and Northern Ireland.

‘On 29 July, within hours of the killings of three young girls at a Taylor Swift-themed dance class in Southport, the Southport Wake Up group was created.

The manual is believed to have been written by a Russian fascist group proscribed as terrorists in their own country.

It includes details on how to avoid the police and it encourages the targeting of Muslims and Jews.

Underneath the post, other members wrote aggressive and offensive comments, including: “I’m ready for these migrant boys,” while another describes “invaders” as “a stupid bunch underestimating whites”.

“He also posts voice notes - in one he describes himself as a “national socialist”, and in another he appears to call for the genocide of Jewish people.”
