How long will this continue?

No word yet from Yvette Cooper who insists “smashing the gangs” is the way to stop this. Hmm.

The last time this idea was mooted it was soundly objected to and “they” didn’t exactly go out of their way to sell it to us did they. Then it was dropped like a hot potato. Why I wonder 🤔

Possibly because they realised that like passports, credit cards etc. they would immediately be fraudulently copied.

Petra, havent they just!

Donald Tusk ( he of the EU commission) has stated that he will not accept any EU ruling on immigration when it threatens his country’s security. How times have changed.

Granmarderby10 Just some information, No, asylum seekers do not have to apply in the first safe country.

"An asylum seeker (or asylum applicant) is a person who has applied for recognition as a refugee under the Refugee Convention, to which over 140 nations are signatories. There is no law that says asylum seekers must make their asylum claim in the first safe country they arrive in after leaving their country of origin."

Granmarderby10 Sat 12-Oct-24 22:25:50

Britain are not the only European country to accept refugees, and we have not taken in the most.
It clearly suits some to believe differently. It appeals to our collective arrogance at being the best at this that and the other.

Logically as an island no one should seek refuge here because apparently those fleeing their homeland are supposed to claim asylum at the first safecountry they arrive at. Obviously this hasn’t happened as it should
This would be grossly unfair to whichever nations was nearest geographically to where the people are escaping from.

It has to be shared.

On the subject of ID I have managed for 63 years without photo ID, I don’t drive or have, want or need a passport.

All this codswallop about election fraud- they should maybe concentrate on making voting mandatory, that way we might achieve goverment by consensus, and introducing PR too so voters felt truly recognised and represented and that they have a stake.

Yet still I persist, living and functioning- just like before the smart phone we all managed.
If the government wants us to have ID they should provide it but first prove what good it would do and why we need it.

FriedGreenTomatoes, I do so agree, its probably best to keep a low profile, before I am arrested!

eggplant Sat 12-Oct-24 21:30:24

You're walking a fine line...not really.Feel free to express any concerns?

BevSec Sat 12-Oct-24 21:29:53

PuddyCat, thank you, its so good to know and I am really grateful for your support.

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Sat 12-Oct-24 21:29:15

Exactly why I keep a lower profile on these threads nowadays. Some posters are goady then trigger happy to report. Echo chambers are so soothing aren’t they?

PuddyCat Sat 12-Oct-24 21:17:06

^I most definitely share your concerns.%

Millions of others do too, but they feel silenced by accusations of being "far right" or, even worse, "a racist". You're walking a fine line if you express any sense of alarm or concern about the level of immigration now; socially and legally.

eggplant Sat 12-Oct-24 21:16:14

Not really on the attack? More a curious bystander.

Happy to hear examples of repression.

Eggplant, gosh you are on the attack! We all know about the suppression of women under a regime like the Taliban. We all know that this country is not like that yet and I have made it very clear in previous posts that I worry about what the future holds for my granddaughters. You, I know, do not share that concern, regardless of how much illegal immigration is happening. From what I have read the actual numbers are being kept from us and downplayed from what they actually are. Many people I have spoken to share my concerns.

I most definitely share your concerns.

Anyway the Rwanda scheme is out of action now that KS in his great wisdom🧐has decided to scrap it.
His solution? Appointed someone or other to head up the Border Force.Which will work obvs😂

No idea growstuff but even a fraction of the vast numbers were struggling to accommodate here would be great.

Really? Do you honestly think anybody would notice the difference?

It’s the thought of being sent to Rwanda that would put people off coming here that counts not the number that Rwanda are prepared to take.

PuddyCat Sat 12-Oct-24 18:35:26

I do.

^So what do you suggest happens?^

Reintroduce the Rwanda plan. We've already invested millions into it, migrants will be perfectly safe there and they can make their formal applications for asylum.

How many people was Rwanda prepared to take?

I watched a prog tonight about Dementia. It highlighted a new drug that is available but people here cannot have it as the NHS cannot afford it.

Same applies to drugs for other diseases and illnesses.

Maybe we could afford it if we weren’t paying millions for people crossing the channel in boats.

The costs of dealing with migrants comes from the Overseas Aid budget. Nothing to do with funding research into AD medication.

It's coming - at root - from our "national budget" though. We all know perfectly well that we can swop money from being designated for one type of expense to being swopped to covering another type of expense instead. We do that in our own personal budgets all the time.....and use "our personal spending money" funds for "something urgent that's cropped up - eg a boiler repair" for instance.

The plans were thwarted because they weren’t workable and cost us, the taxpayer, many millions if not billions over the years.

It's costing us a fortune to house them here

So what do you suggest happens?
