How long will this continue?

No word yet from Yvette Cooper who insists “smashing the gangs” is the way to stop this. Hmm.

Another 3 deaths by drowning this morning, just off the French coast. An overcroweded small boat of 50+.
Apparently, the mayor of Calais is protesting loudly that the French government is just turning a blind eye to what is going on.

I'm not sure what was achieved at the French/Italian meeting on Friday. Apparently Barnier said the Albanian set up wouldn't work for France, I think because of legal reasons. However, both countries will continue to clamp down on migrants coming across the border. I've seen police walking up and down the train from Nice to Ventimiglia (7km from the border), but that seems about as effective as nonchalantly asking me at the ferryport in Caen if I have any immigrés in my car! Why don't they get real, I'm getting fed up.

Have I missed something?

Who is trying to close down the thread ?

Nothing wrong with being concerned about who and why people are arriving in small boats…

Blimey, what is wrong with a bit of banter and humour!

Nothing, except when you don’t like it.

Ah just banter then! No thanks.

Congratulations Fried Green Tomatoes Tribe!

The best way to close down a thread, or turn it into an echo chamber is to form a gang … very playground bully IMO.

It’s just a bit of fun around a comment made😃 there’s no bullying involved if that’s your worry, join in with a brew

Sorry totally confused now. Have a nice afternoon.

I was confused by your post too and now doubly confused as your own post confuses you too.
As you say. Have a nice afternoon.

Really, it is utterly beyond me. Where does it come from this nonsense, this hatred, this prejudice?

And what's the pay off?

I’m asking the same question you asked.

jasper16 Sun 20-Oct-24 10:30:56

Good Morning Mollygo, Sorry I'm not clear what it is you are asking? Thanks

Mollygo Sun 20-Oct-24 09:50:59

Still waiting to hear from Jasper about the payoff.

Go for it FriedGeenTomatoes. The echo chamber etc already exists on here, and they’re not in your gang.

Jasper16, there is no nonsense, hatred or prejudice in the above posts, it is sad you think there is.

Hatred? A drama-llama word.

Anxiety and concern-certainly, whether it’s for what will happen here or what will happen to the asylum seekers or both.

Pay off? Looking forward to hearing yours.

It would be a good thing to put to a public referendum because views are so polarised.

I dont think any Uk political Party would dare do that again for decades!

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Sat 19-Oct-24 19:30:31

“Clearly, this is going to take time, and we regularly review our use of asylum accommodation because, as set out in the manifesto, we’re committed to ending the use of asylum hotels and saving the taxpayer billions of pounds.”

That was from the link you supplied Casdon. ⬆️⬇️

The Home Office is understood to be reviewing the hotels being used to house asylum seekers. But the department would not confirm if it is seeking to use more or reopen any of those previously closed.

A bit confusing isn’t it?
Yes. no, maybe? They certainly aren’t revealing much - let alone A Plan.

In the meantime, - more hotels?
This is going to cost us taxpayers a mighty big sum.

I know I sound as though I’m carping. However Labour came in having dissed all suggestions from the Tories. I am still hoping Yvette Cooper has formulated a workable solution and shares it with us soon.

She’s just gone to ground. No interviews recently, no briefs from her office. Nada.

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Sat 19-Oct-24 19:20:49

jasper who are you addressing? It’s not clear.
Me?

jasper16 Sat 19-Oct-24 18:14:20

You do comprehend the basic enonomics and politics behind

hotels?

I assume?

Where has Yvette Cooper disappeared to?
That strong opinionated feisty women who was going to sort out illegal immigration?
Oh … she is busy booking more hotels.

More hotels that Starmer said would not be used by Labour. 🤣
