Sad news. Whatever you think of his politics, he played an important role here in Scotland:

That is sad only 69. I don't know much about Scottish politics but he seemed a reasonable man. Obviously wanting the best for Scotland without coming across as anti English.

Redrobin51 Sat 12-Oct-24 18:08:32

I liked him and am sad to hear about his death

GrannyGravy13 Sat 12-Oct-24 18:10:11

RIP 💐

Yes, sad news

Casdon Sat 12-Oct-24 18:18:57

That is a shock. RIP.

Oreo Sat 12-Oct-24 18:20:31

I’m not sad, just being honest here.
Am sure he had a lot of fans in Scotland tho.

Its a funnny feeling when people die and you think " That's no age" and realise it is.

Sorry for his friends and family.

Certainly a big shock. I wonder why he was making a speech in North Macedonia of all places. Irrelevant I know. His poor wife will be so shocked.

RIP

Interesting obituary for an interesting character.

Seems rather apt that in his final speech, he said: "Scotland is a country, not a county".

TerriBull Sat 12-Oct-24 18:50:44

Oh dear, I think he just collapsed, some underlying, undetected health condition. What a shame! no great age these days, 69 I think.

RIP

RIP Alex Salmond.

A final full on swipe at John Sweeney.

Maybe a final swipe at WM as they arranged a regions and devolved governments event in Edinburgh with our new Colonial head none other than Sue Grey!!
Alex Salmond was a brilliant politician who took us to the very edge of being free of WM .
The horrible court case against him was sadly a necessity ,if Nicola had dealt with the allegations in-house we would have been crucified in the media as being crooked…..after all it was Lesley Evan’s who started the witch hunt against him ,Evan’s who worked FOR Wm from the Edinburgh building now clad in Union Jacks,
I remember clearly saying he was innocent and wouldn,t be convicted and I was right. They were trumped up charges meant to cause division and they did, because sadly Alex didn’t see it as a necessity he felt betrayed. That was the reason for ALBA but it split our support and our vote.
I will always have the greatest respect for the man he was but disappointed in the man he became. He was one of the best things to happen to my country in my lifetime .RIP Alex….the dream will never die

Here's Alex at his best ,taking lying unionist MP's to task! Remind me when DID the oil run out ? youtu.be/bPNasRD_X0Q?si=E-BSG7uFfPNBn5uy. decades on and WM are STILL selling licences and taking taxes for oil in Scottish waters .

The SNP did deal with it "in house" botched it, he sued and won and it cost the tax payer a fortune.
Lesley Evans simply told Sturgeon there had been accusations raised against Salmond. Sturgeon seemingly "forgot" about that.
Scotland now has a minority government in growing debt and a population suffering because of years of mismanagement, their resounding bleat being it's all Westminster's fault.
It's beyond tedious, and it isn't Salmond's legacy.

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Sat 12-Oct-24 20:57:00

He was a man of staunch beliefs and I had to admire him for that.
RIP Mr. Salmond and condolences to your family.

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Sat 12-Oct-24 21:00:18

From the Telegraph just now:

“Alex Salmond – known as “Wee Eck” after a nickname from a Sunday newspaper cartoon – outshone the lacklustre, out-of-their-depth domestic politicians.”

Floradora9 Sat 12-Oct-24 21:29:42

I am no fan of Alex Salmon but really sorry for his wife who is some years older than he was . She kept well in the background most of the time .

Floradora9 Sat 12-Oct-24 22:17:47

From Glen Campbell the BBC Scottish political advisor . It shows Salmon's darker side
While he could be charming and entertaining, there was also a less pleasant side to his character.
I would wince when sometimes he would show impatience and irritation towards his staff. He could be very demanding of them.
I can also recall bringing a senior BBC editor from the newsroom in London to see him and was astonished when he asked my colleague if he was on a colonial visit.

Shocked to hear he'd died; RIP.

Sorry for his friends and family.

69 does seem relatively young though.
His widow Moira is 87.

That sounds quite unexpected.
He was in North Macedonia at a conference.
