The US Election.

With only 3 weeks to go, perhaps we can start to watch the shenanigans taking place in the USA.

Trump is warning America of his intention post election.

“Donald Trump has provoked an angry backlash from Democrats after calling for the US armed forces to be turned against his political adversaries when voters go to the polls at next month’s presidential election.
In comments that added further fuel to fears of an authoritarian crackdown if he recaptures the White House, the Republican nominee said the military or national guard should be deployed against opponents that he called “the enemy within” when the election takes place on 5 November.
He singled out the California congressman, Adam Schiff, who was the lead prosecutor in the ex-president’s first impeachment trial, as posing a bigger threat to a free and fair election than foreign terrorists or illegal immigrants, his usual prime target for abuse.
Trump’s comments, to Fox News in response to a question on possible election “chaos”, triggered an angry reaction from Kamala Harris’s campaign, which likened them to previous remarks that he would be a dictator “on day one” of a second presidency and his suggestions that the US constitution should be terminated to overturn the 2020 election result, which he falsely claims was stolen by Joe Biden”.

What I think and hope will happen is that Europe will now be forced to become independent of the USA and be stronger as a result because it will understand that it must entirely stand up for itself.

I fully expect that the U.K. will be part of this coalition.

How are they not independent?
I realise I may be very ignorant on this.

I am not in the least bit surprised.

It looks like the republicans have won, despite Trump, if they had had a more appealing candidate it probably would have been more decisive. Im surprised that more women didn’t turn out to vote for Harris.

Don’t worry the world is not going to end, that is emotional rubbish, it didnt end in 2016, if anything the US is likely to be more inward looking. Zelensky is not going to be pleased because Trump has been very non commital on Ukraine.

No, I don't think the world will end, but IMO it will be a far less desirable place. As far as I know, I am still allowed to express an opinion.

My worry about Harris winning was that the US would drag Europe into the Ukraine War, otherwise I’m not expecting any change affecting the UK. What they do in another country is no concern of mine, at least the US is democratic.

Apart from wars[which I agree is a huge issue], does the US have as much influence over the rest of the world, as some say?
I could be very wrong.

After watching and listening over the past few weeks I’m not a bit surprised.

Democrats all around the world must listen and learn the lesson that vast inequality in wealth, health and education, which is getting wider, will produce leaders like Trump.

Listen to the ordinary folk!

Goodness knows how the world will deal with this, but all the authoritarian figures must be full of glee.

Utterly depressing.

Your second paragraph.

May not be the moment now, but could you explain more about it sometime, please?

I worry for Ukraine

I worry for Climate change

I worry for the potential of mass incarceration and deportation.

I worry for democracy.

We will have to wait and see.

We may not have to wait long, I am guessing.

Trump has been appealing to younger men (who feel disenfranchised?)

What a mess.
🤕

People disregard them at their peril.

Did calling people stupid and nazis not work again. Who can believe it.
Mind I probably need not to take up a career in election predictions.

What about those who didn't call people stupid and/or Nazis? Are they not allowed to express any kind of opinion? Some people base their opinions on policies rather than childish name-calling.

I think there are many things at play here. You really can’t condemn a massive slice of the American population because of the way they vote. Best to try to understand rather than look down on them from a European perspective.

Understanding 'why' doesn't override feelings of dismay for the effect it will have on the whole world. Moreover, it's not just the US which is producing this kind of result. I fear for the future - my future, the future of my children and their children - until the wheels of history turn a full circle.

I'm feeling very depressed but I think what we're witnessing the result of a poor education system and a huge disparity between the rich and the poor. I'm afraid it also demonstrates the inherent sexism and racism in the US. This is a very sad time for the world but I haven't completely lost hope ( yet).

That's how I feel. It's depressing that the alleged "leader of the free world" is going this way.

I am sick. Even in the slim chance she pulls it out, the number of people who voted for this man disgusts me. Women voted for this.

Please pray for our daughters.

It may take much more than prayers - Trump and the appalling Vance will have the women of America compelled to wear Burkhas, if they have their way. And that is NOT as far-fetched as it may seem - the curtailment of women's hard-won freedoms will definitely be on the agenda......

mae13 Wed 06-Nov-24 04:15:17

If Trump wins and then dies in office (because that is NOT a well man) then the highly mysoginistic Vance will be running the US.
Is American politics existing in some kind of unknown paralell universe, totally disconnected from sanity?
