The US Election.

With only 3 weeks to go, perhaps we can start to watch the shenanigans taking place in the USA.

Trump is warning America of his intention post election.

“Donald Trump has provoked an angry backlash from Democrats after calling for the US armed forces to be turned against his political adversaries when voters go to the polls at next month’s presidential election.
In comments that added further fuel to fears of an authoritarian crackdown if he recaptures the White House, the Republican nominee said the military or national guard should be deployed against opponents that he called “the enemy within” when the election takes place on 5 November.
He singled out the California congressman, Adam Schiff, who was the lead prosecutor in the ex-president’s first impeachment trial, as posing a bigger threat to a free and fair election than foreign terrorists or illegal immigrants, his usual prime target for abuse.
Trump’s comments, to Fox News in response to a question on possible election “chaos”, triggered an angry reaction from Kamala Harris’s campaign, which likened them to previous remarks that he would be a dictator “on day one” of a second presidency and his suggestions that the US constitution should be terminated to overturn the 2020 election result, which he falsely claims was stolen by Joe Biden”.

I find "The Rest is Politics US" podcasts extremely well-informed and helpful.

mamie yes I also - my problem is finding the time to keep up with it all.

Isn’t Katie Kay’s diction good?

Much more exciting than our dull dreary last one.

I would hope, Freya that your post was tongue in cheek, because the reality of Trump as president again is so scary. The man is nuts

In a way, do you really think I want Trump as the next Potus. No. The showmanship on both sides is mind boggling, both seemingly telling porkies, caught out by video. Still we have no say in who will be voted in, poor America, neither of them will be good for the country I fear. I think there will be unrest whoever wins.

It is. I think in one episode Anthony Scaramucci said something along the lines of how her voice alone made her a person of great power and influence in America. 😂

Thank you for starting this thread. The idea of Trump as POTUS is truly scary not just for the USA but for us all.

You sum it up well. Politics in the US is in a real mess. However, Harris seems like a grown-up who will appeal to the grown-ups. We had populism here too and now I'm glad it's gone and the children are now eating themselves.

There are massive differences between our systems and yours though, that I don't think people in the UK really grasp.

In the end it is about whether you want democracy, and whether you are prepared to defend it without the use of rioting and violence, only with the rule of law.

Wyllow3 Tue 15-Oct-24 10:41:48

Trumps campaign/supporters continually use the words and memes around war, not of contesting a democracy. They stir hatred, division. They talk of a MAGA "army. Steve Bannon stood up and declared "Victory or Death!
see him do this

This article below refers to Steve Bannon's tactics (his words) to "flood the media with sh*t) and describes with many examples how Trump has been doing just that over the last few weeks, and takes a hard look at how Elon Musk is using SM as part of the campaign.

Yes, the media have more power and control in the US than they even do here! It's very concerning, but people still believe this stuff.

There's something that doesn't add up here. I don't know about the national guard' but surely the military can only be deployed on the order of the President.

As Trump won't be President on the day of the polls how could he possibly deploy the military then? And Biden certainly isn't going to do it.

Or is he calling for insurrection in the military?

Wyllow3 Tue 15-Oct-24 13:26:14

I think this is an example of Trumps grandiose, self deluded and manipulative thinking, as you are right, the military itself cannot be deployed in this way. Is he hoping for insurrection in the military? Very possibly. But will military leaders entertain such action?

A snippet from the Guardian:

"While Trump, being out of power, will be in no position to deploy troops on election day, his call for military power to quell political opposition is familiar, recalling his demand that soldiers be deployed in the streets of Washington DC in 2020 to disperse thousands of demonstrators protesting the death of George Floyd.

Gen Mark Milley, the then chairperson of the joint chiefs of staff, reportedly came close to resigning over the demand

I watch Meidas Touch on u- tube
It’s unbelievable the spite and lies that Trump issues
He talks not of Policies, but of himself.
Strange to have a relationship with Putin - what’s that all about? Won’t have a debate with the opposition as he lost the last one “ They’re eating the pets” Won’t release his medical records- all a bit odd

I will be keeping my radio on all night in November 5th as I did for the last two US elections. I can still remember how awful it felt when trump got in in 2016 then I made myself think “ well let’s give him the benefit of the doubt and wait and see before deciding he’s as bad as we think”. Very very quickly realising my original fears were justified. Then in November 2020 the pure relief and mistaken belief that America was free of this monster and would move on. I still can’t get my head around the fact ( as far as I can judge) that 2024 will be a close result. How can do many ordinary people support the baffoon?
I hope with all my heart that Harris wins and with as a majority that lets us know trump is finished.

Sharing a common border with the USA has we Canadians very aware of USA politics. The joke here is: When the USA sneezes, we get a cold!! It's like living next door to your crazy uncle~~ Sighhh.....
It's a mess there and amazing that unhinged man may actually get into power again!! Who was it that said, "There's a sucker born every minute."

When the economy is tanking, in all countries the voters will toss the government in power whether deservedly so or not, and put another party in hoping for better and not worrying about that party's other agenda.

The political party system is the ruination of democracy and the will of the people. Now it's party first and you come next... right after your representative's wants of course.....
The voter is in third place.......Grrrr~~ angry

I feel really sorry for the election officials, the pressure Trump and co are already putting them under. I think they are already trying to rig the election.

Just read this:

grandtanteJE65 Wed 16-Oct-24 15:54:25

It astonishes me that any country apparently never has visualised a candidate be it for president or prime minister who clearly exhibits tendencies of what can only be called insanity, and has no way of debarring such a person from running.

Surely, these threats of Trump's are illegal?

I can only hope they make some of those who are doubtful who to vote for, decide against voting for Trump.

Macadia Wed 16-Oct-24 16:07:40

Hopefully US citizens can cross a border in Nov

Macadia Wed 16-Oct-24 16:09:42

I think I read that presidents are allowed to run the country from their prison cell.

Cavery Wed 16-Oct-24 16:24:19

Rig the election?
I guess maybe you haven't heard of Biden-Harris suing Virginia, it's own citizens by the way, for not allowing non U.S. citizens to vote, which they cannot but present administration doesn't care about that. Guess you also heard about Governor Newsom in California issuing a state law for counties not to ask for I.D. This was the whole plan with the open border here, which I might add is also against the law but present administration refuses to enforce the law. All for votes they allowed a takeover.

foxie48 Wed 16-Oct-24 18:37:59

Yup, *Cavery but it's not quite as you are presenting it.

The Biden administration sued Virginia election officials Friday, alleging that they were violating federal law by purging voters flagged as potential noncitizens during the so-called quiet period before an election, when electoral officials are forbidden from undertaking systematic removals of voters from registration rolls.

"The lawsuit comes on the heels of a similar Justice Department challenge to a move by Alabama officials to initiate removals of voters from the rolls. Republicans have made the alleged threat of noncitizen voting a central focus of the 2024 campaign, though instances of noncitizens casting ballots are extremely rare.

Three weeks to go and it’s too close to call.
Now who’d have even thought those words were possible at the time Biden was persuaded to step down? Media frenzy greeted Kamala those first few weeks. Now?
