The US Election.

With only 3 weeks to go, perhaps we can start to watch the shenanigans taking place in the USA.

Trump is warning America of his intention post election.

“Donald Trump has provoked an angry backlash from Democrats after calling for the US armed forces to be turned against his political adversaries when voters go to the polls at next month’s presidential election.
In comments that added further fuel to fears of an authoritarian crackdown if he recaptures the White House, the Republican nominee said the military or national guard should be deployed against opponents that he called “the enemy within” when the election takes place on 5 November.
He singled out the California congressman, Adam Schiff, who was the lead prosecutor in the ex-president’s first impeachment trial, as posing a bigger threat to a free and fair election than foreign terrorists or illegal immigrants, his usual prime target for abuse.
Trump’s comments, to Fox News in response to a question on possible election “chaos”, triggered an angry reaction from Kamala Harris’s campaign, which likened them to previous remarks that he would be a dictator “on day one” of a second presidency and his suggestions that the US constitution should be terminated to overturn the 2020 election result, which he falsely claims was stolen by Joe Biden”.

Rolling Stone magazine chart the beginning of the obsession

"July 2023: “That’s like ‘Silence of the Lambs’ stuff.”
Speaking at a rally in Erie, Pennsylvania on July 29, 2023, Trump alluded to the film that had introduced Lecter to millions of moviegoers.

“People are pouring across the border now, disease-ridden people,” he warned the crowd. “And I said it, I said it over and over: people from mental institutions, from insane asylums,” he claimed, falsely. “That’s like Silence of the Lambs stuff. But they’re coming in to our country.”

..."At the earlier event in Waterloo, Trump launched into his usual anti-immigration rhetoric and spoke about a supposed “invasion” at the border. “Think of it, the people coming in, think of it,” he said. “They’re from prisons and jails.” He went on to claim that migrants are “from mental institutions and insane asylums, noting that “an insane asylum is like Silence of the Lamb [sic] stuff.

"That’s serious stuff. That’s Hannibal Lecter. How good an actor was he? How good an actor was he? Did he play a good role, right? But insane asylums, they’re emptying them out.”

Its so offensive as well as complete nonsense.

Today of talk about how "immigrants" are taking jobs away from African Americans and Latinos. Clear aim at his last minute target group - young men)

Iam64 Sun 03-Nov-24 21:06:04

Oh My - thanks MaizieD, I’d missed this. He’s so off the wall, scarily so. What on earth is wrong with senior Republicans not to call Trump out.
They were all over Biden for confusing words, clearly being unfit to stand. But that was ageing - this is ageing plus personality problems

Wyllow3 Sun 03-Nov-24 20:59:48

I looked it up - he's ben alluding to Hannibal Lecter on and off all summer (there are videos with it in August). Not sure why.

Nmama Sun 03-Nov-24 20:49:00

Well, Trump is obviously sensitive about the fact that people have been saying "Why does he keep on bringing up an old movie about a cannibalistic serial killer? Why does he call him 'the late, great Hannibal Lecter'? What is WRONG with him?" There definitely IS something wrong with him. And there's something wrong with the Republican party, in thrall to him.

There are English words in what he said. But what he said doesn't seem like English, or not English as you and I know it. It's the speech of a demented man. If your elderly uncle talked in ways that are so adrift from standard English syntax, would your family be deeply concerned about him? Take him in for testing by a reputable doctor? Would you think "Hey, perfect material for the highest office in our land"? Well, neither do I.

Somebody bring on the men in the white coats, this man is either on something or should be.
But joking aside....what the hell?

LizzieDrip Sun 03-Nov-24 19:25:16

OMG😱 This man is not well.

halfpint1 Sun 03-Nov-24 19:11:37

Reading that speech is frightening.

That is a word-salad to beat all word-salads.

What on earth is he trying to say?

And this man, if he wins, is going to be one of the most powerful men in the world?

I feel I'm living in some sort of parallel universe - aren't there any Republicans who will stand up and say that the Emperor isn't wearing any clothes?

Babs03 Sun 03-Nov-24 17:47:21

Nmama, no you are definitely not all crazy, or at least we have family in NYC and The Orange County who don’t seem to be crazy, and you don’t sound crazy either.
And am pretty sure people outside the UK thought we must all be crazy for voting for Boris Johnson and Brexit.
We did neither btw.

I'm feeling very concerned for the US. I also think Trump is preparing for defeat and because he can't be seen as a "loser" he's playing the "election stolen" card again. I think every Republican politician should come out to declare that the election is fair and legal but they won't. Sadly it seems they are also frightened for their families.

Nmama Sun 03-Nov-24 17:02:31

I'm sorry, I've just seen that the Daily Mail is the original source of the pictures of Ivana Trump's grave, so perhaps you've seen it. The website I referred to, Snopes, is dedicating to figuring out the truth about stories in the news . . . and they say it's true.

Nmama Sun 03-Nov-24 16:59:19

American here. We're not ALL crazy, thank goodness, but I am gathering a bunch of snacks to eat when I'm anxious on election day and the days after because I don't think doing a lot of cooking is going to be on my mind.

The Washington Post (behind a payway, alas) has a story about a grass-roots campaign going on in women's restrooms: in the stalls, women are putting up 3x3 post-it notes saying "Your vote is YOUR vote", "Your husband / boyfriend doesn't need to know how you voted", and so on. My own guess is that a lot of American women want control of their own reproductive health, as I've said before, so in my mind, at least, there are a lot of unknowns.

Trump had his first wife buried at one of his golf courses. (Not the Scottish one, you'll be happy to hear). Here's a link to a picture of her grave: www.yahoo.com/news/fact-check-real-2023-photos-213300066.html

Whadda guy.

I am probably jinxing it but I am beginnjng to think Harris will win.

I feel this too so maybe we will both jinx it.
Whatever happens it will be dangerously close I think, and this will lead to Trump declaring it has been fixed and encouraging his supporters to go on the rampage again.

Exactly what words he wants to sink in

"Frantic campaigning by Trump amid Iowa poll shock"

Its looking very close.

The Guardian has a "live feed" gong now on the election

This reminds me of a piece on the radio today. Egypt have imprisoned a British/ Egyptian citizen.
While is was shadow foreign secretary David Lammy continuously badgered the government.
Now he is foreign secretary not a word of protest from him.
As said by his sister.

Phew. Thanks Maizie, I appreciate that.

So for example if I said bloody Alistair Campbell, it's alright for him to support (well initiate some might say) the Iraq war, it wont be him who is being shot, I wonder if he would be so keen if it was him facing the bullets, this does not mean I am wishing death on Alistair Campbell.
That is my last try.
There are numerous real things to critique Trump on, this is not one of them.

Apologies. I've 'got it' now.

I agree.

petra Sat 02-Nov-24 19:52:53

Allsorts

I just don't understand Americans at all now. Can’t believe what their normal is. Trump should be behind bars yet he has faithful supporters.

Some Americans couldn’t care less if he should be in prison.
All they know is: they had more dollars in their pockets when he was last in power.
Why do you think poor black people vote for him 🤷‍♀️ Money.

To be fair it has only been explained once on here but lots in another threadgrin.
I am exasperated because I am watching Alistair Campbell of all people say this too. But that's not your faultsmile

I’d give up if I were you. You won’t get through. 🤦🏼‍♀️
