The US Election.

With only 3 weeks to go, perhaps we can start to watch the shenanigans taking place in the USA.

Trump is warning America of his intention post election.

“Donald Trump has provoked an angry backlash from Democrats after calling for the US armed forces to be turned against his political adversaries when voters go to the polls at next month’s presidential election.
In comments that added further fuel to fears of an authoritarian crackdown if he recaptures the White House, the Republican nominee said the military or national guard should be deployed against opponents that he called “the enemy within” when the election takes place on 5 November.
He singled out the California congressman, Adam Schiff, who was the lead prosecutor in the ex-president’s first impeachment trial, as posing a bigger threat to a free and fair election than foreign terrorists or illegal immigrants, his usual prime target for abuse.
Trump’s comments, to Fox News in response to a question on possible election “chaos”, triggered an angry reaction from Kamala Harris’s campaign, which likened them to previous remarks that he would be a dictator “on day one” of a second presidency and his suggestions that the US constitution should be terminated to overturn the 2020 election result, which he falsely claims was stolen by Joe Biden”.

One of the worst for meddling in free speech was actually the previous owner of Twitter. The left should be protecting it but they dont.

Wyllow3 Mon 28-Oct-24 10:38:41

Corruption and oligarchy last Friday, no surprises there. Many high profile figures have cancelled subscriptions.

There is a very big issue here which we have in the UK to a lesser extent. When big business moguls - unelected, powerful figures - buy newspapers and then use them to crush the breadth of freedom of speech - goodbye democracy.

I see no cause for celebration here whoever wins, frankly.

I dare say. But he knows which way the wind is blowing. Best now not to think ‘it’s Kamala’.

Well, well. On Friday, the Washington Post announced that it would not be endorsing a candidate in the presidential election despite its editorial board (unsurprisingly) drafting a full endorsement of VP Kamala Harris. It was later revealed that Amazon billionaire Jeff Bezos, who owns the Post, had personally vetoed the decision to endorse Harris, framing it as an end to endorsing any presidential candidates in general. A few hours after those stories broke, executives from Blue Origin – Bezos’ aerospace firm – met with Donald Trump, and the CEO of Amazon also reached out to the former president over the phone.

Bezos is worried that it will affect business, especially with Musks in the mix. He is busy covering all bases rather than signifying genuine support for Trump.

It seems too close to call. In the event of a very close finish either candidate could invoke legal proceedings all the way to the Supreme Court which might take time. I assume Biden would remain as a caretaker until it was resolved but I don't know if they have a rule about that if it ran beyond the official succession date. There is also the possibility of civil disturbance on a large scale which I assume Biden has planned for given the previous riot in DC.

Trump is beginning to look, and sound, deranged. He raves, pouts, threatens, lies - the thought of his being the most powerful leader on the world stage is truly frightening - and the fact that he has said if he loses, then 'he won't lose' Presumably this promises another riot from his supporters who caused such mayhem last time, when told to go and take what was theirs when they stormed Capitol Hill. what a time to be alive.

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Mon 28-Oct-24 09:59:14

Re Peurto Rico …

Didn’t West Side Story essentially make the same point - but a little more artistically all those years ago?

Anyway.
It was a joke (admittedly in poor taste) by a comedian. Remember those?

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Mon 28-Oct-24 09:50:29

Might as well stand “in the shadow of the White House” as that might be the nearest she actually gets to it! 😁

Wyllow3 Mon 28-Oct-24 09:29:11

Kamala Harris' last big event will be in Washington: in the shadow of The White House on Tuesday, Vice President Kamala Harris will deliver a closing argument to the American people as to why she should be elected the next president of the United States.

Some 20,000 people are expected to attend the rally on the Ellipse between E Street NW, Constitution Avenue NW, 15th and 17th streets NW, according to an approved permit from the National Park Service.
Overflow crowds will be directed to the northeast grounds of the Washington Monument.

What did happen at the New York Rally? More hate filled divisive rhetoric form a crowd who'd come from all over the country as its Trumps last bigly event. Trump hates New York of course, as it's strongly democratic and the home of successful prosecutions against him.

"‘There was certainly a dark tone throughout the hours-long rally, with one speaker describing Puerto Rico, home to 3.2m US citizens, as an “island of garbage**”; Tucker Carlson mocking Harris’ racial identity; a radio host describing Hillary Clinton as a “sick bastard”; and a crucifix-wielding childhood friend of Trump’s declaring that Harris is “the antichrist” - and much more divisive hatred.

Trump makes himself such an easy target for the media with his outrageous pronouncements and daft behaviour. They couldn't not mention it. If only the republicans could have come up with a sensible, respect worthy candidate and not this international joke figure.

nanna8 Mon 28-Oct-24 08:11:43

I have the sense that the press who, on the whole, are so against Trump, have encouraged his supporters so that they feel they are sticking their fingers up and are playing the part of daring rebels and true Americans. I sincerely wish the press would stop taking sides, it doesn’t help. The more they rail against Trump, the more support he gets. Reverse psychology.

God above, I hope not. Whoever wins, the days after the election seem likely to be challenging to Americans. Let me say, for the record, that I love my country and admire many people from its history, and that I am proud to be the descendant of a man who spied for the US against German during World War II; as a consequence of work he and other agents did, more ships full of desperately needed supplies got past U-Boats and were able to dock in Britain. He was lucky to through the war; the work he did took great courage and selflessness, and I admire the men and women who were able to do great and selfless work for America and for the world.

I think that sometimes people who admire Trump imagine that those who don't do not care for our country or its traditions and its great heroes. Nothing could be further from the truth. My flag goes up on every national holiday and will be up on election day. God bless America, the United States, and the rest of the world. May peace prevail on earth and in our hearts.

Tonight, (well now in NY)

In the Democratic stronghold of New York it is rare to see someone wearing even a “Make America Great Again” hat.

But today thousands of people dressed to their eyeballs in Donald Trump merchandise have descended on midtown Manhattan for the former president’s historic rally at Madison Square Garden.

Stalls lining the streets opposite Macy’s are selling everything from banners reading “I’m a Trump girl, get over it” to T-shirts with the image of the former president pumping his fist in the air after his first attempted assassination attempt.

9 more sleeps and Trump is going to win, bigly!

Whitewavemark2 Sun 27-Oct-24 10:47:22

General John Kelly - Trump’s former chief of staff has described Trump’s rhetoric as fitting the description of fascist.

The question now is whether Trump would in effect rule as a fascist dictator if he wins the presidency on 5th November.

Trump is undoubtedly pressing the nationalist button, and he is a white supremacist up against a black woman, which will appeal to the racists in the USA, of which there are many.

Trump does have a group of people who will run the administration for him, but if individuals like Bannon and other alt-right supporters get their claws into the White House then I think USA is potentially in real trouble.

The only glimmer is that most people with power in the USA are loyal first to the constitution, and we have evidence that they were able to stop Trump’s more outrageous plans such as bringing back torture, knee capping USA citizens by the military. (The reason for General Kelly’s departure from chief of staff). Trump is already threatening to close down TV news outlets which are known to be critical of Trump. Let us hope those loyal to the constitution will prevail if Trump gains the presidency, but it is by no means certain.

Those of you following the election might already know this podcast. I've been listening for some time now.
I think it's always interesting.
It looks at focus groups (hence the name).

Trump has got this in the bag. The momentum is unstoppable and to make matters worse, the Democrats are panicking and resorting to the " Trump is a fascist" line of attack which is an insult to peoples intelligence and complete vote loser.

I doubt it will be a vote loser, the Trump faithful will vote for him regardless but it is significant to those Republicans that are sitting on the fence because they dislike Trump and Harris equally. It's of note that more Republicans who held high office during Trump's presidency have come out in support of John Kelly.

If Kamala can fix it - why is it still broken?

Isn't it obvious - she wasn't the president. It isn't the role of the VP. They can make suggestions but it's not their call.

More interested in why anyone thinks Trump can "fix it" when we know what kind of president he has already been!

Wyllow3 Fri 25-Oct-24 23:33:16

Correction: He think he's invincible.

Wyllow3 Fri 25-Oct-24 23:32:25

Nmama I think Trump has been advised the less he says the better because he constantly puts his foot in it.

If he really isn't well I don't know what will happen! He'd hide it before the election as he he's invincible and will get better.

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Fri 25-Oct-24 21:40:15

In Boston. Great handwritten sign that said “If Kamala can fix it - why is it still broken?”. 😁
