The US Election.

With only 3 weeks to go, perhaps we can start to watch the shenanigans taking place in the USA.

Trump is warning America of his intention post election.

“Donald Trump has provoked an angry backlash from Democrats after calling for the US armed forces to be turned against his political adversaries when voters go to the polls at next month’s presidential election.
In comments that added further fuel to fears of an authoritarian crackdown if he recaptures the White House, the Republican nominee said the military or national guard should be deployed against opponents that he called “the enemy within” when the election takes place on 5 November.
He singled out the California congressman, Adam Schiff, who was the lead prosecutor in the ex-president’s first impeachment trial, as posing a bigger threat to a free and fair election than foreign terrorists or illegal immigrants, his usual prime target for abuse.
Trump’s comments, to Fox News in response to a question on possible election “chaos”, triggered an angry reaction from Kamala Harris’s campaign, which likened them to previous remarks that he would be a dictator “on day one” of a second presidency and his suggestions that the US constitution should be terminated to overturn the 2020 election result, which he falsely claims was stolen by Joe Biden”.

Donald Trump seems to have no idea about what friendship is. Right, Putin shakes hands with him and doesn't say anything when Trump is spouting off; Trump figures they must be friends and decides he knows Putin "very well." Trump wants to believe that people like and admire him--I mean, the people at his rallies do--and since he blurts out everything that crosses his mixed-up mind, Trump is incapable of imagining that Putin (or anyone else) is sitting silently and thinking "What a fool" and "He wants to play with the big boys--me, China--and will do ANYTHING I want him to. Great! Zelensky's toast!" I'd love to see the evidence for Putin not respecting Biden; Biden may be partly round the bend, but unlike Trump he's not a completely blithering fool and relies on information from capable advisers.

If Trump is elected and dies in office, we'll have JD Vance as our president. To me, JD Vance is a machiavellian little creep who is the vice presidential candidate because Trump liked him best--which is to say that Vance, hungry for power and fame, kissed up to him and made him think they're "friends." There's Trumps desire for friends coming in play again. Never mind about Vance comparing Trump to Hitler in the past. Just because of that comparison, I have no idea what Vance would do as president. But I suspect it might not be as bad as the policies Trump would unleash.

Trump has been cancelling interviews and events lately, and someone on his staff said that was because he's exhausted. I keep wondering what will happen if he has an entirely disabling stroke or dies before election day: he's an old confused man. (I'm an old woman, to be fair, but I don't think I'm as confused as Trump is.)

North Korean troops are already in occupied Ukraine but are a major disappointment to the Russians as they keep running away! This was reported last weekend. With modern communications how can Putin not know this info is out already?

"Former President Donald Trump said if reelected he would end the war in Ukraine before his inauguration because he is respected by Ukraine and Russia’s leaders.

That is a war that’s dying to be settled. I will get it settled before I even become president

the Republican said during his debate with Vice President Kamala Harris on Tuesday. If I win, when I’m president-elect and what I’ll do is I’ll speak to one, I’ll speak to the other, I’ll get them together.”

“I know Zelenskyy very well and I know Putin very well. I have a good relationship and they respect your president, O.K., they respect me, they don’t respect Biden.”

this is from the Harris Trump debate, and a short video

Talk about hubris.....Zelensky his buddy?

I was referring to people on this forum.

Def not just you, its come up a couple of pages back as a major concern.

Oreo Fri 25-Oct-24 14:00:06

We should worry more about North Korea cosying up to Putin.
NK troops will shortly be in Ukraine fighting for Russia.
The awful Modi is another not to be trusted leader who sucks up to Putin.

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Fri 25-Oct-24 13:53:51

It can’t be just you if your husband thinks the same can it?

MayBee70 Fri 25-Oct-24 13:45:50

Is it just me that’s worried that Trump is going to ally himself with Putin in some way? DH thinks the same. He’s going to broker a deal with Putin in which Ukraine gives up territory and make himself out to be a peacemaker. Russia is pulling so many strings these days; I don’t understand why western governments aren’t awake to it, but maybe they are but can do nothing about it.

Wyllow3 Fri 25-Oct-24 13:08:57

I have very little sense of what he'd be like really, as he has swung from being a Never Trumper in 2016-20 to possible VP.

Wheniwasyourage Fri 25-Oct-24 11:59:45

Nmama, best wishes from me too. I do feel for you as it must be very scary just now.

In 2016 a friend of DDs kept having his Vote Biden notice stolen from his front garden, so he put up a sign saying that every time it was stolen, he would donate $100 to the Biden campaign. It wasn't stolen again.

I worry also about who is pulling Trump's strings. If he goes certifiably mad, does Vance get the job? He seems even more scary as he seems to be saying what he says on purpose, unlike Trump.

Wyllow3 Fri 25-Oct-24 11:45:49

Thats why Trump has refused to have any further debates 1 2 1 with Harris.

Nmama Fri 25-Oct-24 08:01:39

Thank you, Wyllow3.

NotSpaghetti, Schiff was on the January 6 Committee, which was very critical of Trump. He's an attorney, a former federal prosecutor. speaks like a civilized human being, and without yelling, screaming, or producing obcenities, is calm, straightforward, and fearless. I think they HAD to be pretty fearless to be willing to serve on that Committee. Trump can't stand it if the other person doesn't lose control, splutter, and descend to his profoundly juvenile, nasty, and irrational level. If you saw any of the Harris-Trump debate you saw what happens when Trump can't bully his opponent--he's just reduced to frantic behavior and speech, and that does not win debates.

NotSpaghetti Fri 25-Oct-24 03:10:58

Nmama I watched Schiff on catchup on MSNBC yesterday as I wanted to know why Trump so feared him - with all the "enemy within" rhetoric. I had only heard his name until I Googled him. He came over pretty well I thought.

Wyllow3 Thu 24-Oct-24 23:13:03

all the best.

I don't think a "Trump or Death" would be allowed in the UK!

Elon Musk's stunt reminds me of British elections in a much, much, much earlier period, when people were given a great deal of beer by candidates who hoped to influence voters--I think Dickens wrote about such an election in a fictitious town called "Eatenswill." At any rate: I'm an American, my birthday is November 5, election day in the US, and I would MUCH rather be celebrating Guy Fawkes Day with you. I figured it is going to be such a nerve-wracking day that it was a good day to have dental work done. That's my Election Day plan--I'll have mailed my ballot well before that, and I'm voting for Harris and Schiff. Donald Trump has done a lot to wreck family harmony; his fans are MUCH more vocal and in-your-face than Harris's admirers (and/or people who would vote for anyone who has a chance of defeating Trump). "Harris for President" signs keep getting stolen in my town, a small liberal town surrounded by a mostly conservative rural area. I regularly drive past a large sign in someone's field that says TRUMP OR DEATH. What on earth does this mean, I wonder? If he doesn't win, this voter is going to kill himself? I kind of doubt it, and it feels pretty threatening--who is he planning on killing? It's a scary period for Americans. On my way back from the dentist I'm going to buy a lot of groceries I can store or freeze, a lot of canned goods . . . I just don't know what's going to happen in my country if Trump doesn't win, and I am planning on staying indoors till I feel less frightened. I'm not planning on making an extended trip to visit my son in New Zealand . . . not quite yet. But if Trump is elected, it's in the back of my mind.

My thoughts are with Americans like you. Even if he loses there is going to be trouble.I’m almost wishing he had won last time because now we would be rid of him ( if he hadn’t turned America into a dictatorship, that is).

How anyone, just anyone, can vote for this 'man' is just beyond the beyond. He is a sick narcissist with serious mental issues.

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Thu 24-Oct-24 20:45:51

Still looks like the candidate who can best get their supporters out to vote will be the winner.

Wyllow3 Thu 24-Oct-24 14:32:48

Good news - looks like Elon Musk has had to drop his indirect "votes for money" scam (the one with regular payouts of 1 million dollars to foster republican votes)

"After news of DOJ warning, Elon Musk’s super PAC didn’t announce ‘daily’ lottery winner on Wednesday"

"Elon Musk’s super PAC didn’t announce a winner for its “daily” $1 million giveaway to registered swing state voters on Wednesday, the same day news broke that the Justice Department warned Musk’s group that its sweepstakes might be illegal.

The pro-Trump group, America PAC, had publicly named a winner every day since Saturday, when Musk announced that he would award $1 million every day to people who sign his petition. The petition is in support of the 1st and 2nd Amendments to the Constitution, but importantly, only registered voters in the battleground states can sign the petition and are therefore eligible for the money.

CNN reported Wednesday afternoon that the Justice Department had sent a warning letter to the super PAC, notifying it that the lottery might violate federal law against offering incentives such as cash or prizes to induce voter registration

There's a whole slew of articles/u tube about "White Identity politics" from the right

only in the USA - fortunately.

Wyllow3 Thu 24-Oct-24 13:34:19

Both parties discuss identity issues - winning the "this vote" or the "that vote" in relationship to ethnic groups, women and so on -

It's front page all the time. Statistics issued, etc etc.

Galaxy Thu 24-Oct-24 13:26:23

And you wonder why people vote Trump. Because the left has in many cases lost its way and will embrace any identity politics that catches its fancy, no matter the cost.

Galaxy Thu 24-Oct-24 13:24:23

Yes global level of insanity.

Wyllow3 Thu 24-Oct-24 11:19:28

As far as I am aware all governments are saying the same, which is that it is up to the international governing body of the sport concerned to lay down guidelines. As you say David, it's global.

David49 Thu 24-Oct-24 07:39:16

NanKate

I too am worried if Trump wins it’s very bad news for Ukraine.

I’m pleased that Kamala would give women rights over their own bodies regarding abortion. However she does not appear to want to protect women’s sport from the trans community. And before anyone accuses me of being anti trans I am not, they should have their own sports events.

It’s highly unlikely there will be a trans class in sports, there does need to be one set of rules that will ensure fair competition globally.
