Great! What is Starmer thinking of?

1700 were released in September too and many went on to reoffend. Some were released wrongly!

Thanks Allira, sorry to hear that. I don’t know what planet some of these posters live on, I think they just bury their heads in the sand. It really isn’t a safe world today- long gone are the days you could leave your door unlocked, or even ajar for fresh air 😞

It was a while ago now but one I remember

Mt61 I think that's over the top.
Being killed by someone you haven't let into your home in the ordinary way (as a husband or close friend) is such a ridiculously low risk!

If you genuinely think you need to do this - I think that maybe you aren't feeling very well.

Do you even live in the real world?

Our friends had their house broken into when he was asleep at home, his wife away visiting her sister.

He did hear them and made a racket, shouting to his wife to phone the police (even though she wasn't there), rushed downstairs but they'd scarpered, with the family silver, heirlooms that had been passed down generations.

It could have been worse.

Better safe than sorry.

Yes silverlining you’re right that it’s unusual normally for a first offender to get a custodial sentence, but with regard to the riots, we also know that many first offenders have indeed received prison sentences, notably a woman who wrote a post on Facebook encouraging people to join in the riots, which she took down two hours later. She was convicted (not sure of the offence) and is now in prison, I think, but not sure, for three months. It was her first offence! Did she really need to go to prison? Well either Keir Starmer thinks so, or the judiciary are interpreting his words too strongly. It’s one or the other!

This man was convicted because he was calling the police ‘scum’ and carrying a placard and making racist remarks, saying police were protecting rapists. He lived in Rotherham which of course has its own particular history with respect to grooming gangs, and maybe that history coloured his view. We don’t know. The fact remains that a man who behaved badly, but not violently, was given an extraordinarily long sentence, which has resulted in him taking his own life.

It’s very sad.

It has not been confirmed that he took his own life.

No, I think it is you is deluded! There is nothing wrong in keeping ourselves safe. Our South African neighbours had only moved in the previous month, when all hell let loose on our cul-de-sac- five luxury cars stolen, including a tourer, police said it was an outfit from Merseyside, (they never shit on their own door steps these burglars), my friends French doors smashed in, luckily her son was home on a visit.
All the neighbors have installed cameras, including the SA neighbors who thought they were in a safe country 🙄- so all must be sick too!

As well as the need for staff, of course.
I meant more prison staff

Need - Petra and Allira - there is an awful lot of work to be done!

Petra you are so right about the need for a really adequate Probation Service.

As well as the need for staff, of course.

But just how inadequate are some of these substantially built older prisons?
I'll wager that they are in a better state than many schools and could be refurbished.

The Prime Minister said: “I’m really angry about having to release these prisoners at all.

“I didn’t spend five years of my life as chief prosecutor putting people in prison in order to, as PM, have to release them because our prisons are overfilled.

Really?

How many prisons have been closed in recent years? Several have been shut because they were considered not to be up to the standard required.
How odd, then, that our innocent children were forced to spend much of their lives in unsafe school buildings on the point of collapse.

They are going to be constantly looking over their shoulder and frightened for their children if they have any.

Dear god. The sooner this government is kicked out the better. We’ve got 5 years of this s..t. Unbelievable.

Agreed.
What next I wonder.

There is an excellent piece on File on 4 today covering the let out on licence program.
The whole scheme is a farce.
A friend of ours was let out on licence. Then he was sent back to prison because of a false allegation made about him.
This call back happens instantly, no ifs or buts.
Like the prisoner in the above program it took nearly a year for the police to come up with no evidence to support the allegation that he had broken the conditions of his licence.
This has happened 3 times to the prisoner in the File on 4 programs. This means that if someone has it in for you it’s just a phone call away to get you taken back to prison.
As many of us know the probation service was washed down the plug hole when it was privatised= calibre of probation officers.

Ah, OK Wyllow3, my mistake. For some reason I thought he was an MP. I shall wait for the outcome of the trial in Jan.

Wyllow3 Wed 23-Oct-24 13:31:34

His trial date is Jan 2025.

It will be interesting to see what sentence that MP will get when he was videotaped telling people to go out and cut their throats.

He wasn't an MP Foxy, he was a councillor and action was immediately taken. It took a very quick google to check!

He already was suspended and has been arrested and charged by the Met police. He was held in custody not released and pleaded not guilty so is likely to be awaiting trial.

Yvette Cooper is just being true to her word. Taking immediate action to solve the prison overcrowding problem. She's been just as tough on the illegal immigration crisis by granting an amnesty to 88000 already here and thousands more arrive each week.

Foxyferret Wed 23-Oct-24 13:10:13

I think his name is Ricky Jones and he was threatening the far right or Nazi scum as he described them.

I don't see any alternative to releasing prisoners early, the Conservatives had to do the same and still would if still in power.

I’ll be getting cctv, extra locks on our doors & windows, it will be like Fort Knox- not that I have anything of real value- just our lives! I think people lives have become cheap these days 😩
